Harpers POV
I ran out of my house with my pants not even zipped and my toothbrush hanging out of my mouth. I don't understand how every freaking day I wake up early but when it comes to the time I have to wake up early I never do. I got into my car and looked at myself in the rearview mirror. My hair was a mess and there was toothpaste on the side of my mouth. I groaned as I spit the toothpaste out the window and grabbed a baby wipe that was in my car and wiped my face.
I had a job interview today and my alarm didn't go off. Either that or I forgot to set it.
Not important.
I put my toothbrush in the glove department deciding to buy a new one on the way back. I fixed my zipper and then looked down at myself. Good enough. I started my car and made my way to the building.
Hi, my name is Harper Jones. I am 23, I live in a mediocre apartment. I just finished college about a few months ago. I am not really a social butterfly but I will be if I have to. I was born in Connecticut and I have been in foster care my whole life. How I managed to get the money to go to college? I still don't know. I have always worked my ass off and I am an overachiever, and I'm proud of it. As far as I know, the main reason my parents gave me up was because of my member that lives in my pants. I was born intersex and I don't have one problem with it. But some people do. And unfortunately two of those people turned out to be my parents.
The job that I applied for was to be an assistant to a woman who I admire a lot. I've read all her books and each and every one of them makes me feel inspired to do something with my life.
I gave my application to one of the secretaries months ago and never got a call so I just assumed that I didn't get it. So whenever I did get a call last night you wouldn't be able to imagine my excitement. But then my alarm had to be an ass so now I'm about five minutes late.
I pulled up to the large and fancy building and took a deep sigh. I don't know why I'm getting all excited about this for because I don't even know if I'm going to get the job or not.
I shook my head of the negative thoughts and got out of my car. I grabbed my phone and stuck it into my back pocket. I was wearing black jeans and a buttoned up light blue blouse. It's casual but not too casual.
I walked into the building and was amazed with everything. The place was so...hell I can't even explain in. The atmosphere was calming and I felt welcome. Which I guess was kind of the point.
I walked around for about two minutes lost as hell and getting more irritated seeing as I'm already late. "Are you lost?" I turned around to see a man holding a drink in his hand and smiling at me. I chuckled and looked down.
"Is it that obvious?" He laughed and shrugged his shoulders.
"Maybe I can help. What are you looking for?" I put my hands in my pockets.
"I have an interview to be Mrs. Davis's assistant." He looked away. "What?" She took a sip of his drink and shrugged his shoulders.
"Oh it's nothing. I just have never actually seen her have an assistant. Well her office is on the top floor your interview will probably be up there." I thanked him and walked to the elevator.
The elevator was all glass so as I rose I looked over the entire building which was amazing. As they stopped I stepped out and looked at the place. It looked kind of the same but with less people. I walked around until I found the receptionist. I walked up to the blonde and smiled. She looked at me and smiled back. "Hi, I had an interview today." She nodded her hand and stood up while holding out her hand.
"Hi, my name is Samantha." I took her hand.
"Harper." I pulled my hand away and watched as she sat back down. She looked back at me and squinted her eyes. I looked around awkwardly trying to avoid her stare.
"How would you like to be interviewed by Mrs. Davis herself?" My mouth kind of fell open a little and I chuckled.
"I don't think I'm mentally prepared for that." Samantha giggled and stood up. I watched as she walked over to me and then checked her watch. As soon as she looked up the elevators opened. Samantha smiled.
"Right on time." A groan from the elevator came and out stepped the woman who I have come to adore at this moment. She had on a pencil skirt and a white blouse with a black blazer. Her black hair was up in a bun and had a coffee in her hand. She looked like she was already irritated which didn't help me one bit. "Reena, this is Harper, and she is interviewing to be your assistant." The goddess took off her sunglasses and that's when I saw her green eyes. I swear to god I down there died.
I watched as she looked at me up and down making me feel uncomfortable. She then looked back at Samantha. "I thought you said you would handle this." Considering that Samantha called her by her first name I'm assuming they are friends.
"I have work to do, work that an assistant could do." She said, hinting to me. The green eyed beauty rolled her eyes and sighed.
"Fine." She walked towards an office and Samantha pushed me towards the same direction telling me to go. I looked at her to see her holding up two thumbs making me chuckle.
I followed Mrs. Davis all the way into a room to which I'm guessing is her office. It was a little old school but still looked fresh to which I absolutely adore. There were books on a bookshelf behind her desk, three chairs with a coffee table in the middle, was centered in front of her desk, and a really big window to the right that brought in most of the light.
I watched as she walked up to her desk and sat down her purse. She then sighed and looked at me. It was quiet for some time only making this situation worse. "Have a seat and we'll get started." She said as she went behind her desk and grabbed a notepad and a pen. I walked over to her desk and sat down on one of the chairs.
She sat down directly across from me and crossed her legs. I watched her legs for a moment but quickly looked away before she noticed. "So Harper is it?" I nodded my head. She clicked the pen and looked at me. "Tell me about yourself." I lightly sighed.
"I am 23, I just graduated from Pomona College a few months ago, I majored in writing and teaching I-"
"Okay sorry to interrupt," she said as she leaned forward on to her knees. I swear to you I felt like I was in therapy. "I mean, tell me something about who you are. Honestly I could hire you with you not knowing anything about books, but if I am going to hire you I need to know who you are so I can trust you. Clear?" I nodded my head.
"Well um, I was born in Connecticut, I've been in for foster care my whole life, when I was in middle school I was kind of known as the girl who always got into trouble but has always gotten good grades, I have never disrespect an adult in my life no matter how bad they treated me. I have mastered how to get along with people I don't like, and I have always wanted a chimpanzee." I watched her as she cracked a small smile.
I'm not joking though. I want to live with an animal who has the same IQ as me.
"What about past relationships?" I shrugged my shoulders.
"Uhh. Not much. I have dated a few people here and there but they never turn out to be the person who I thought they were." She kept staring at me as she leaned back.
"You're hiding something." I was taken back by this a little. I mean I wasn't exactly hiding anything from her.
"What do you mean?" She tilted her head to the side.
"Your gay." Again, I was taken back.
"Y-yes I am." She hummed in response.
"But that's not it. What your hiding is something your afraid I won't like, something you're not embarrassed about but not exactly to fond about either." Okay. I am definitely in therapy. "But I won't hold that against you. We all have secrets." I didn't even get the chance to respond because she stood up and went back to her desk again. I watched as she pulled out a paper. "Her is a contract, read over it and have it signed by tomorrow morning. Or you can just email me." I smiled brightly as I stood up and took the paper.
"Thank you Mrs. Davis. You have no idea how much this means to me." She just hummed in response.
"Yeah, must be great working for Eric Davis's wife." She said as if she was annoyed with the sentence itself. I squinted my eyes and chuckled a little.
"No offense to your husband Mrs. Davis, but I am not the biggest fan of your husband. I'm more interested in your work." She looked me directly in my eyes.
"Is that so?" She said as she crossed her arms.
"Absolutely. "Cages" was honestly my favorite." Cages is about a woman who is married and ends up falling for a woman she works with. It did get some criticism from the Karen's in the world but for the most part people loved it. It was very thought out and detailed. It might have possibly made me cry at the end, not saying it did. It's just the main characters didn't get to be together and it just broke my heart.
"Well I'm glad you liked it." I smiled and nodded my head.
"If you don't mind me asking. How exactly did you come up with a book like that?" She took a deep sigh and shrugged her shoulders.
"All of my books come from something personal that happened in my life, but I add a little twist to it." I smiled and nodded my head again.
"Well again thank you. And I will most likely email you later." She nodded her head.
"I'll be waiting." She then winked and I swear to god my dude just throbbed. I choked back whatever i***t thing I was getting ready to say and just walked out.
Whatever thoughts I have need to stop because that woman is married. And is also my new boss.
