I glance at the stack of paperwork on my desk and let out a heavy sigh. Taking just one day off seems to have come at a steep price.
But I do not care. I close my eyes and I see Sawyer. I can almost taste the sweetness of her lips, and feel how vulnerable and yet resilient she was in my arms… I wish that day could have lasted forever…
When I planned the surprise for her birthday, I genuinely had no hidden agenda. I simply believed she deserved to be spoiled and showered with affection for a day… Maybe, deep down, I felt like thanking her for the birthday cake she baked for my dad. But that was the extent of it. There were no ulterior motives lurking in the shadows.
