Episode 01
Serenya’s Pov
I walked in front of the mirror and touched my gown's fabric. With a tail that kissed the floor, the pink satin glistened in the light. The dress looked bold because of the tight bodice, the corset that lifted my body, and the slit along my thigh. As I moved, my golden heels showed through.
I chuckled quietly. I doubt I'll wear something like this again. I didn't think I'd be able to wear a dress this elegant again once the baby started to show. The thought made me smile even more, and I reached down to touch my belly.
I was still in shock. I was expecting a child.
Kaelen Draxion was expecting a child. My Fated Mate. The Crescent Moon Pack's Alpha. Long before I understood the true meaning of love, I fell in love with him,and I immediately said "yes" when he proposed to me. I believed that my dreams had finally come true.
However, reality is different from dreams.
I realized that Kaelen had never asked me to marry him out of love. He desired a Luna who would embody the future of the pack, act the part, and look the part. Not much more. Even though that truth was painful, I kept it to myself. I gave him the loyalty he expected, the patience he sought, and the smile he desired.
Foolishly, I had hoped that one day he would see me instead of just the title I wore. I was still waiting two years after that hope first appeared.
He told me last week that he was prepared to start a family. that he desired a successor. Without hesitation, I gave him what he wanted. I wanted to tell him the truth about the pregnancy tonight. He would know after the mating ball.
I applied more perfume than usual. Pregnancy brings out some scents in female werewolves when they are pregnant .
Before I could conceal the bottle, the door flew open.
"Serenya, I hate waiting, what are you taking, Kaelen's voice faltering. His piercing gray eyes slowly moved from my face to my toes as they scanned me. His eyes lingered on the slit, the curve of the gown, and the gold glimmer at my ankles.
He remained silent. He didn't.
His mouth then twisted. "What made you drown in perfume? With that stench, I can hardly stand close to you.
I turned to the closet and forced a small smile. I walked back, selected a tie that was precisely the same color as my gown, and held it out. He remained motionless, allowing me to approach. Despite the pain in my chest, I kept my fingers steady as I looped the tie around his collar.
He had grumbled about my perfume just now. He was standing so close now that I could feel his breath on my cheek. As I tightened the knot, his gaze followed every movement of my hand.
He was discussed in whispers. They could see the warning signs everywhere: his coldness, his temper, and his pride. However, their perception of him is from mine. No one knew him as well as I did. Or so I told myself.
He carried the memory of a girl who had saved his life and whom he had been looking for ever since. He was unaware that I was that girl.
However, I was also aware that he was not carrying love. Perhaps gratitude. He felt the pain of a wound that never healed. Would he ever love me for myself if he knew the truth? Or would he obligate himself to me because of an accident from his early years?
That's why I said nothing.
I muttered, "You look handsome."
"I always do." Tell me something new.
I shook my head at his sly smile. He was not mistaken. Kaelen was striking even in simple clothing.
I stepped back and tightened the knot. "There." You can look in the mirror.
"Not required. I am certain that you tied it flawlessly. He put on his jacket. Now, move quickly, we can not keep the unmated wolves waiting.
My smile remained unwavering as I nodded. For the wolves who were still awaiting the Moon Goddess' blessing, the Mating Ball was for them.
But me? Kaelen was already my choice. And occasionally I pondered whether the Goddess would punish me for it. Was I going to fail because I turned down her gift?
We got to the ball within an hour and I sensed Kaelen's body shifting next to me as soon as we entered. He stiffened his shoulders. He clenched his jaw.
Before I could stop myself, I grabbed his arm.
He looked down, and then his voice came through the link into my head. What is this behavior?
My throat constricted.
Serenya, did we not agree? We would let each other go if one of us found our mate.
I breathed in and closed my eyes. I didn't need him to remind me of the pledge. I recalled. However, I had begun to believe once more after he had expressed his desire to start a family. Perhaps we still had a chance.
I couldn't bring myself to say it aloud. Rather, I kept my gaze on the crowd and pushed my face into a rehearsed smile. Luna never gave up. Not in the open. Even when her heart broke, she never gave up.
I made myself ask through the link. Is she present?
Indeed. His response was incisive, bordering on impatient. The girl in the white gown caught my attention.
I looked around. My gaze immediately fell upon her.
Draemir Seraphiel.
Her golden hair cascaded over her shoulders as her gown glistened like moonlight. And as if she couldn't decide where to look, her hazel eyes, which are similar to mine, lifted from Kaelen to me and back again.
I was out of breath. She could have been my sister because she resembled me so much.
And I knew right then.
She was occasionally glancing painfully between Kaelen and me.
