Chapter 20

JD outburst to Evana

Evana, after starting dating Danny, felt like something had changed in her life, despite her situation at home she was more radiant and happy, maybe the thought of someone somewhere thinking of her and loving her triggered all this happiness. At school she promised herself to work harder to make Danny proud of her. Despite, her joy and happiness she remembered Danny warning not to share their secret with anyone, as letting another person know, was as good as letting her mom know, as that person will also tell another person as a secret, and within no time it won’t be a secret anymore. Therefore, she did not share her joy with her friends so she was feeling guilty, but based on how their friendship was she decided to keep her secret until she felt time was right to share with the girls.

Unknown to Evana and Jersey, Kerry already had a boyfriend and they were doing well, and Kerry really enjoyed having a secret which she only shared with Larry, now the three friends were having their own secrets each, and their friendship though to others looked strong, they all knew that it was very weak. Kerry was coming with new things and would give excuses that they were gifts from her elder siblings which the girls believed but the truth was she was getting money from her boyfriend who happened to have a brother in the United State but the family didn’t talk about it so only the family knew and now Kerry as Larry shared the information with her.

April holiday was the same routine farm, taking care of animals and fetching water, but one thing had changed, Danny was helping her out. He would wait by the river with his bike, pretend to be coming from Naishi shopping center and help her and Lisa with their water, this way there was no suspicion of any sort. However, one of the crazy girls who were after Danny her nickname JD came to her for confrontation, she was really angry, being a teachers daughter in the village sometimes, one could think they owned the entire place based on how she talked and walked. So this particular day, Lisa and Evana were coming from the river, and they were about to reach their gate, when they had someone calling from behind. Lisa turned and saw it was JD, so she told her sister and they both decided to ignore her, they were never friends as JD always talk down on them because of how their mother use to beat them and treat them.

“Hey Evana, how many times do I have to call you….okay if you don’t stop I will follow you to your house and see how your mother will react if she hears you are dating Danny.” JD shouted.

Evana felt like her heart has stopped beating, how can she know, nobody knows about it did she see us together, she got worried. Before she could say anything to JD her sister Lisa came to her aid.

“What in God’s name are you blubbing about? When did Evana and Danny start dating? JD are you the village sheriff, listen everyone in this village knows you love Danny and follows him like a fool but he does not even spare you a glance, so take your bitterness somewhere else!” Lisa talked like a machine whose play button had just been pressed. Evana was surprised no one knew this side of Lisa. It took JD some seconds to find her words and she was more furious

“Listen here small girl I can be whatever I want in this damn village, my mother is a teacher and my dad works in the city….” Before she could continue Lisa interrupted her again “so what… the whole of Naishi knows that, tell us something new…”

“What is new is that your sister is dating Danny and your mother must know about it if she does not break up with him!” JD shouted.

Lisa looked at Evana, and she looked scared, they both had put their water cans down, Lisa thought Evana was scared because their mother always believe anything and beat them, “Evana, do you know whatever she is talking about? Lisa asked, Evana despite being scared was not ready to just surrender to JD, so she shook her head to mean no. Lisa believed her, no one knew but she hated how people in this damn village looked down on them because of their mother, so here was an opportunity to show the arrogant JD what she was made off.

“Listen here miss proud turkey, my sister knows nothing of the nonsense you are spewing and polluting the air with, so just shut your mouth and get the hell out of here!” Lisa too shouted.

“Listen here you naive girl, your sister is so caning, she first befriended Leah, and through the friendship she managed to seduce Danny, I don’t even believe, he like her, there is no way you can compare her with me, just look at how she is dressed,” JD retorted. Through that explanation Evana figured out she had nothing on her.

“Miss have it all why didn’t you do the same befriend Leah and then seduce Danny, actually I don’t see what your problem is, Danny is neither your husband nor your boyfriend, he is a free man who can date whoever he chooses too!” Lisa was really mad, “at least we wear descent clothes unlike some people I know who walk half naked!”    

“You defending your sister, but I was told that Danny have been helping you carry water from the river, that is enough evidence, and if your sister does not agree and break up with Danny am going to tell your mother and it’s me she will believe.” JD threatened.  Lisa was getting worried because JD was JD the village crazy b***h, but even if it meant calling Danny and Leah she was ready for that.

The girls did not know that their shouting had been heard by a lot of villagers including Evana mom, who was watching the whole scenario from the fence and could not believe it was her quiet Lisa who was having such a sharp tongue. As they continued to argue and exchange words, JD could not take it anymore and opted to fight with the girls, but before she could slap Lisa her hand was held midair by Leah, that when they realized there was a cloud of villagers there. Their mother too came out and joined the people, among the people Danny was there and he was burning with fury, too bad he could not act as his girl was being bullied by the person he detest the most in the village.

One of the elders asked them to explain what was happening, and Evana, told them the whole encounter, JD too told her side of the story on how Evana befriended Leah and has now bewitched her Danny, to an extend he fetches water for them. Leah too defended Evana, and told everyone she was the one who befriended Evana based on the fact that her behavior was good, Danny too was asked to talk, he told everyone that he was Evana’s friend and respects her, he also said that he was the one who offered to help them carry water and during those times he was coming from doing some errands. So it was clear that JD was making things up to cause trouble for Evana. One of the elders Mr. Mwathe, looked at Evana’s mom and told her, “you see the consequences of your actions, since you treat your children badly no one respects them, if Lisa didn’t stand up for her sister, am sure you could have believed this girl accusation and beat your child for nothing, hope this incident has taught you a lesson.” Evana’s mom could not say anything, she just shook her head to mean she understood.

JD was asked to apologize to Evana, Lisa and Danny, Danny also asked her to stay away from him because next time if she try anything he will take action, based on the family reputation, the warning scared JD. The meeting ended abruptly as it has started, the girls finally took their water home. Their mother was silent, it seemed the event had opened her eyes, but they were yet to know the kind of effect it would result to.

Evana went to their bedroom and smile their secret was still safe…
