Evana Say's Yes Evana digested all Danny had said to her, her heart was beating too fast, she touched her forehead, no am not having a fever, then she pinched her arm there was pain, so it was not a dream. Danny, looked at her and as her face expressed her emotional change, one thing was for sure she was delighted. But that did not console him, he really wanted to hear her answer, he was really hoping she would say yes, then they can see the way forwards. Evana, noted how Danny look, he looked more handsome, with that look of anxiety, she felt like she needed to touch his blows and smoothen them. That look could not allow her to say no to him, beside she also wanted to have the experience of having a boyfriend, but she knew if she just accepted it won’t look good on her side. “Danny are you sure of what you asking me of?” she asked him. “Evana more than ever I know what am asking you of, all this time you have not noticed how I care about you?” Danny asked. Evana started to flashback and then everything now started to make sense, all the help she got from him and his sister. “Has Leah known about it all this time?  She asked. “Yes she knows about it and she is the reason why I never asked you to date me last year, she was worried that I might cause trouble in your life therefore I agreed with her, she really likes you.” He told her. Evana, was caught by surprise by what Danny told her, the siblings seemed to really care about her, especially after hearing how Leah did not want Danny to put her in trouble with her mother that was really touching. “So has she now agreed that it right time for you to date me….” she looked at him. Danny realized that Evana and Leah have become very great friends and she might not accept to his terms. “Evana I think for now it has to be between me and you that is if you will accept to date, as till now you have not given me an answer.” He told her. “Danny I really like you maybe by now you already know, but your sister was right on one thing, this might bring lot of trouble with my mum.” She told him. “I know that Evana, but I think its best we give it a try, maybe if we are careful no one will note and we will make it public when you done with high school, because I can’t imagine you dating someone else” Danny explained his plan. Danny and Evana, talked at length and they concluded that they would start a relationship, which was supposed to stay between them. They reached Danny’s gate and it was already dark, so as a good boyfriend, he offered to take her near their gate. When Evana got home, it was tensed she went to the kitchen for Lisa to update her, that’s when she learned that Tessa and Petra went to the Posho mill and were not back, and their mother was angry because, Evana too was not back from school too. When Evana got in the main house, her mother was seated on her favorite seat with folded arms, and Evana could see trouble but she decided to be ignorant. “Hi mom,” she greeted her as she walked towards their bedroom. “Hi mom….” Her mother mimicked her with a voice full of mockery, “Evana, now you are in high school….you have grown some breast now you think or feel we are equal, two women in the same house….now you can come home at any time you wish….eeeh?” her mother shouted. “Mom… take it easy the games just ended at around 6:30pm, if you go out on the road you will see students, on their way home.” Evana tried to explain it. “Who are you talking to in that tone? Her mother asked, she was now standing up and walking towards Evana, “now you think we are equal?” “I just told you why am late…” she answered while walking two steps back. Her mother noted and closed the distance and slapped her across the face, “you see you can’t even stand as I talk to you… you have really grown horns.” That slap got Evana by surprise, if it was before, tears could have run down her cheeks, but then she remembered Danny, and she made up her mind not to shed a tear. That action irritated her mother, she slapped her again this time harder, but she only flinched out of pain, “now you have grown horns for sure you can’t even cry…mmmh?” her mother took her by surprise and started hitting her anywhere she wished like, without a care, Evana realized that if she doesn’t cry her mother would not let her go, she was already on the dusty floor, she let tears roll down her face, she apologized, but not as loud as she used to. “So you can’t even cry now…since you have become an adult you don’t want people to know am beating you, Evana…?” the beating continued. Now this is the issue with most African moms of the days, they would beat you and if you cry it’s a problem, if you don’t cry now that used to be a bigger problem. No one could understand them, at times they would beat you and when you cry they add the beating, saying you crying so that the neighbors can gossip about them, that all they knows is beating their children. Now our girl Evana mom was a typical African mom of the day, that’s why even as she took the beating she did not quite understand her mistake.   After the mother was done, she asked her to change her school uniform and go look for her younger siblings who had not returned from the Posho mill. Joe was told to accompany her, as she walked towards the Posho mill direction, her body was hurting all over, she was in real pain, she questioned God why she had to be born in such a homestead. Having a day of peace and tranquility was like Christmas. It’s like her little brother knew what was going through her mind. “Evana, just take heart, be patient like Sara, and make sure to perform well, when you are eighteen years you can get a job and leave this place,” he told her. At first words were stuck in her throat but she tried and managed to talk to her brother, “Joe, I know that is why I chose never to argue with her like I use to….” They heard some voices and from a distance ahead of them they saw two small figures, Joe called out their names and they answered. They were glad that the children were safe, funny enough when they went home and explain that there was a huge line at the Posho mill, their mother only managed to say “okay” and that was it. “What a life….no! what kind of injustice this was,” Evana thought.
