Chapter 18

Will you be my girlfriend

It was May, and all students went back to school, Mitch too had healed and he was delighted to be back with his friends. He even made a speech to the whole class expressing how touched he was by their gesture.  What surprise the class is Jersey, request to Mr. Jody to change her deskmate. This even astonished Evana and Kerry, they were not flabbergasted that she wanted to change partners but the fact that she had not told them, beforehand, as best friends they believed they had the right to know. The two decided to let it go and not make a mountain out of it.

Mr. Jody was not pleased but when the girl insisted and even said she would rather not come to school than sit with Larry, he realized he didn’t want any drama in his class he change her with Joy who was not happy parting with her deskmate. Jersey was happy that, by the end of the day, Kerry was not seated with Larry, it was just the beginning, and she will make sure they suffer one by one. She hated them, as they seemed not to work hard to get what they want, but what about her despite all her efforts she always failed. It’s like they were the ones who took away her luck, the two weeks she had watched a lot of Nigerian movies from her brothers laptop, and that is when she got ideas maybe her friends were the reason of her misfortune in education and love.

The term was great, they learned more and even joined clubs, what was funny was the fact that Evana was the only person in the whole class who chose Environmental club, Kerry for instance, chose scout club while Jersey chose Drama, Larry wanted to be in the same club with Kerry so he filled the form last. He was glad that they would have some time together without the girls.

The friendship between Evana and Danny too was getting better as friends and Leah started to relax as she realized it was just friendship and most of the time he was helping her out with either school work or books. September came and Danny left the village for collage, but before leaving he left her with several books two of them being Son of Fate and My Life with a Criminal by John Kiriamiti. Which he had spent lot of time looking for after she told him she that loved, the author’s copy of My Life in Crime. Despite not telling each other the parting was not easy, Evana even promised if she needed anything during the time he was away, she would talk to Leah about it and Danny was relieved of his worries. He really feared that another guy would ask her for a date while he was away, but he had to go for a better future he needed education.

The year ended and they were now in form two, although the girls were friends it was not like before, they were growing up and at times found themselves in company of other classmates, but despite that Kerry and Evana could be considered more close. During the December holiday Kerry and Larry had started dating but it was their own little secret as they were not ready to let others know. Despite having the chance to deskmates they opt not to as they felt it might affect or expose their relationship.

Every year there is a tournament held in Lare location, for the remembrance of Late Brother Larry who was a Franciscan brother, and was cruelly murdered by robbers. He really loved the community and helped most children to acquire education, therefore every February a tournament is held for his memorial at St, Francis secondary school and they are open even for the community. So this particular day Evana and her friends were moving from one sport to the other cheering if their school team was playing as volleyball, netball, and football were going on. Kerry was insisting they wait for their school team to play against their first opponent and that they should go and cheer, but her aim was to cheer for Larry as he was in the team. The girls agreed with her and they really had faith with their school football team.

As the day went by the girl went to their school for lunch, as it was not far, as they were coming back to continue watching evening matches, just past the police station gate, they came across Danny who was coming to watch the final football match. He said hi to them and walked the remaining distance with them, that earned the girl envious looks from other girls. Danny was delighted that he had not returned to college that day, the final football match was a tough one as St, Francis boy’s football team was going to play with Lare vision team. Surely fate has a way of always twisting things, why it was not Mbagaria vs Vision or vs St, Francis, nobody knew but anyway they were all waiting for the finals.

The game was tough, both teams were good, they were at each other neck, but at the last minute Larry managed to score a goal that broke the tie, he was good for sure. Lare vision got the trophy the second time, if they would get it another year, they will have to keep it. When the ceremony ended it was around six fifteen in the evening, everyone wanted to rush home, as it was already getting dark. Danny was still with the girls, and had really enjoyed time together with them, so they started going home together, but based on the location of St. Francis they parted ways at the police station. Therefore, Evana and Danny were walking the rest of the distance together, although they could not say it, they were happy to have time together.

As they walked, Danny made up his mind, and he decided it was then or never, he had to ask her to be his girl. As they were getting closer to river Soweto he called her “Evana,”

She was taken by surprised all the way they were quiet and no one was talking, so she took some time to answer “yes Danny,”

All his life Danny has never asked anyone out or dated so he was starting to get cold feet, and wanted to forget it and just let fate deal with it, but out of the blue he heard his mouth talking, “will you be my girlfriend,…I know this got you off guard but I have been suppressing this feelings for long I can’t pretend anymore….”

Evana could not believe her ears, did he just say he have been suppressing his feelings for long….like he also have feelings for me….she was in a confused state, happiness filled her heart….oh God what do I say to him…
