Chapter 24Jayden sought solace in the old church, slumping into a pew near the back. An imposing stone pillar hid her from view and she bent double and stared at her boots. The stone floor bore the wear and tear of generations of worshippers walking across it. Their lost footsteps her comfort. Perhaps some of them had been like her, displaced and hidden in time. Jayden closed her eyes and sought the pulse of the building, the click of old wood settling in the cold accompanied by the muffled clamour of the city. Traffic and people moved around, phones rang and voices rose and fell. The church remained still and constant, an immovable force only nature could shake. It made her think of God’s timeless omnipotence. Her faith had suffered since she stopped attending St Jude’s on a Sunday. McLea
