CHAPTER 1
Gracie “Finally,” I said as we parked the car. Our journey here had been from hell! It took two hours longer than it should have — we got a flat tire on the way and lost Ben and Lola after lunch. They arrived here an hour ago, but it seemed to be one thing after another for Ryland and me. We were exhausted. “Yes!” he agreed. I let out a small laugh; it was either I laugh or cry, and laughing seemed like the better option. The main thing was we got here safe. Ryland’s mom and her partner, Melissa and Jack, were already here helping Brian, who happened to be Jack’s son, move his stuff into his apartment, so I got Ryland to text Peter from my phone to say we would be at our new address soon. I also told him to wait until tomorrow since it was already after six p.m., but my newly discovered biological father insisted he would come tonight. I was happy he made the choice to still come. “Right, let’s get these boxes inside before it gets any later. My mom and Jack said they would be here in a few minutes to help,” We stepped out of the car, and the moment we did, a car pulled up behind us. I smiled when I realized it was Peter. “Yay!” I said excitedly. I gave him time to get out of the car before I rushed over to him. The moment I was close enough, he wrapped his arms around me and hugged me tightly. “Hey, angel, I have missed you,” We had been talking every day since he left, whether it be texts, calls, or video chat, but it wasn’t the same as seeing each other in person. “I missed you too,” “Nice to see you again, Peter,” Ryland said as he approached. Peter and I pulled away, and he turned his attention to Ryland. He gave him a quick hug. “You too, Ryland,” They seemed to hit it off, which was great! Peter even offered Ryland an internship at his firm for when the time came. Since he is an established lawyer and has been for years, I think it would be a great place for him to start working — and with someone he knows. “I am glad you both made it here in one piece after everything,” Peter smiled. Melissa and Jack soon appeared, saying hello to Peter. “Right, let’s get these boxes in. The ones we had, we already put in your apartment. The place is lovely,” Melissa grinned. “I can’t wait to see it,” Peter spoke, “And I know I promised pizza and coffee, but I thought if you are all up for it, we can go out for pizza after everything is inside” I looked at Ryland, and he nodded. Yes, we were both tired, but at the same time we needed to eat, and it gave me time to spend with Peter. “Nice of you to join us,” I heard a laugh from behind us. Lola! It was alright for them. They got here with barely any issues. I glared at her for a second, but we both were soon giggling. “Shut up and help, will you” I stuck my tongue out at her. In return, she flipped me off, but she and Ben still came over to help. With everyone helping, it didn’t take long for us to get everything inside. The unpacking would wait until the following day. “Is the apartment still in one piece” Ryland looked between Ben and Lola with a c****d brow. “Yes! We only got here an hour ago. How much damage could we have done in that time” Ben asked, offended. “I was only making sure,” Ryland laughed. “Do you want a hand with the boxes” Ben asked, and Ryland nodded, “Then hush your smart-ass mouth,” he added with a chuckle. Lola and I looked at each other and rolled our eyes. Boys! Finally, the boxes were removed from the car and taken up to the apartment. The moment I stepped into it, a homey feeling took over me. We had only seen this place once, and I forgot what it looked like in person. It took a quick look around for me to remember why we chose this place. “We have taken the back room. First come, first served and all,” Lola grinned. “That is fine. We wanted the other one anyway,” I replied. Thankfully there was some distance between the rooms to ensure we would not hear each other when we were alone in our rooms. “This one says bedroom. Where is the bedroom” Peter asked. I nudged for him to follow me, and I led us to the bedroom. “Just place it on the floor,” I smiled. “You have a nice place here. The first apartment I had was about the size of your living area and a dump,” he chuckled. “We got lucky, and it helps that there are four of us,” “If you need help with rent, or things for the apartment, don’t hesitate to ask, sweetie, alright” he said, “And about school, do you have everything you need” “Thank you. I appreciate that,” I grinned, “I still need to get books, a new laptop, and things, but I do have the money for all of that,” “Will you let me get you those things, please And the money you have you can use for something more exciting,”
