Baulder smiles at me and suddenly I think I understand him in the same way that he’d said he understood me. He’d had everything ripped away from him at the moment of his death on Asgard. He’d been brought to the underworld and the knowledge that he was doomed to all eternity here rather than having a chance at Valhalla destroyed him. He had nothing left to lose. He might as well make the best of it, but in deciding that he’d make himself happy here, he saved many other forlorn souls. He saw what he could become to the lost and damned here: he could be like his father, Odin, and it twisted in his mind until he wanted to be the All-Father of the underworld. That meant he had to take it from Hel’s control. Oh, what a clever little snake killing with charm.
