“Tell me you don’t want me,” he growled, his voice low and dangerous, breath hot against the shell of my ear. His body pressed into mine, pinning me hard against the cold wall, his grip firm as he held my wrists above my head, rendering me powerless.

“Lie to me, Emily. Lie to me once again.”

My breath came in ragged gasps, my chest rising and falling rapidly as I stared into his eyes...those eyes that always saw too much. My pulse thundered in my ears. I should turn away. I should push him off. I should run.

But I didn’t.

*****

Seven years ago, Emily’s life changed forever when an impulsive prom night with Liam Hayes, her charming but aloof classmate, left her pregnant and alone. Betrayed by Liam’s denial and disowned by her family, she was forced to build a life for herself and her son, Adrian, with nothing but grit and determination.

Now, a chance at a better future brings Emily face-to-face with Liam Hayes, this time, not as classmates, but as employer and employee. Desperate to provide for her son, Emily accepts a job as Liam’s assistant, only to discover she’ll be working under the man who once shattered her world.

After years studying abroad, Liam returns to take his place as CEO and heir of The Hayes Corporation, a multi-billion-dollar empire. He’s polished, powerful, and arrogant. He’s also completely unaware of the child he left behind and now betrothed to his childhood friend, Vanessa Sterling, the poised socialite heiress meant to cement his family’s legacy. Liam believes his perfect world is finally coming together. But some truths refuse to stay buried. And when the past and present collide, nothing will ever be the same.

Will Emily survive working side by side with the man who once ruined her life? Can Liam handle the truth that could destroy his perfect Life? And when secrets come to light, will love be enough to rewrite their past, or will it tear them apart forever?

~The First Night~
“You don’t belong here, you good-for-nothing charity case.” Vanessa Miller’s voice dripped with disdain, her words barely more than a hiss as she leaned close, her breath brushing against my cheek. A smirk twisted her lips, sharp and taunting, making my stomach churn. I slowly lifted my gaze to meet hers, our eyes locked in a silent battle. I didn’t need to speak; my heart raced, each thump echoing my fear, threatening to spill my secret. She leaned in again, her lips curling into a mock pout, eyes glinting with malice. “What’s the matter? Cat got your tongue? Or are you scared someone might notice the charity case doesn’t fit in?” I inhaled sharply, the air thick with tension, and took a step forward, my resolve hardening. Suddenly, she shifted, her shoulder colliding with mine, sending me stumbling. My arms flailed, and the punch in my cup sloshed perilously close to my dress. Heat flooded my cheeks, but I steadied myself, refusing to back down. “Oops,” she mouthed, her expression devoid of remorse, before she turned and strutted away, her glittering dress swaying like a model on a runway. I clenched my fists, my nails digging into my palms, grounding me against the wave of humiliation. Catherine, my best friend, stood frozen, her mouth agape in disbelief. “I told you this was a bad idea,” I muttered, striving for steadiness in my voice. That brat. I should’ve known better. Almost everyone in this school acted like her. If they sensed you didn’t come from money, they treated you like a stray. And if you were on a scholarship just like Catherine and I, the treatment was downright cruel. “When is it ever not a bad idea with you, Emily?” Catherine sighed. “We’ve skipped every social event since junior year, and now you still wish we stayed home for senior prom?” My gaze drifted to my dress. Pale blue chiffon, a bargain-bin find my mom and I had snagged. It skimmed my ankles, the fabric whispering against my skin. Compared to the designer gowns swirling around us, I felt… indistinct. A ghost." Catherine’s lavender dress wasn’t flashy either, but she wore it with pride. We didn’t need designer gowns to belong here. Or so we told ourselves. “That’s… That’s not…” “Precisely,” she cut in, smirking. I knew that look too well. “How exactly do you plan on ever talking to your crush… Liam?” My breath hitched, a cold knot forming in my stomach. “Liam,” she repeated, drawing it out. “You know, the god among boys.” She wiggled her eyebrows suggestively before shoving me playfully with her shoulder. “I…I don’t have a crush on him,” I lied, my gaze fixed on the intricate pattern of the floor." “Oh, please,” Catherine huffed. “Stop with the liars. It’s getting old already.” “I’m serious! I don’t know why all the girls flock to him. There’s nothing special about him.” Catherine crossed her arms. “So you’re not one of those girls?” “No, I’m not”. I snapped. She tapped her chin. “Then what about all those times you hung around just to catch a glimpse of him? Or tried to get him to notice you?” My shoulders tensed. Of course, she knew. She always did Still, I refused to give her the satisfaction of being right. Stepping closer, I placed a hand on her forehead. “Are you okay, Catherine? You might be hallucinating.” “So you don’t love him?” “I don’t!” I yelled, my face contorted in anger. But the sudden thickness in my throat betrayed me What was the point of admitting I had a crush on him, one I’d had since junior year, when I knew he would never be mine? Liam wasn’t just unattainable. He was a dream, a fantasy I had no hope of ever reaching. And fantasies like that only ever led to heartbreak. Catherine leaned in, grinning. “Then I guess you won’t care that he just walked in.” The air suddenly thinned, stealing the oxygen from my lungs. I forgot how to breathe. The world narrowed to a point. I turned, slow, deliberate. There he was. Close enough to touch. My pulse quickened. He was tall, easily over six feet, his broad shoulders straining against the fabric of his suit. Dark brown hair fell across his forehead, and his blue eyes gleamed under the chandelier, cool and unreadable. His jawline was sharp. His lips? Dangerous. He moved with a quiet confidence that commanded the room. "Emily... Emily!" Catherine hissed, a sharp jab to my ribs. "I thought you said you didn't love him. So why are you drooling?" "I wasn't drooling! I was... admiring the cake behind him!" "Sure," she said, unconvinced. There was a shift in him tonight, a dangerous edge that drew me in. Was it my imagination, or were his eyes locked on mine? "Emily, I'm talking..." "Bathroom. Be right back," I blurted, abandoning my drink and purse to her care before disappearing into the crowd. I saw Liam disappearing down the hall and followed, weaving through the couples, my breath quickening. "Liam!" I called, my voice breathless. He didn't stop. A knot formed in my chest as he continued, ignoring me. Not this time. I quickened my pace. "Liam!" I called again, my voice louder this time. He stopped. Then, slowly, he turned. His eyes met mine. My breath hitched as he began to walk toward me, each step deliberate. He stopped, inches away. "Yes?" he asked, his voice low and smooth, laced with amusement—a voice that could make your name sound like a sinful secret whispered in the dark. "I, I... I..." The words died in my throat. He chuckled. "Shhh..." He whispered and slowly pressed a finger to my lips. My breath caught. His touch sparked a fire in my nerves. His cologne wrapped around me, intoxicating... but underneath, I smelled alcohol. He leaned in, eyes gleaming. "Let me guess, you're about to tell me you love and want me too just like all the other girls, right?" I nodded, my cheeks flushed with embarrassment. Liam’s smirk deepened as he tilted his head slightly, his piercing blue eyes locked onto mine. “What if I tell you I want you too?” My heart stopped. “Huh?” I blinked. Am I dreaming? Or did Liam Hayes, the guy I’ve secretly adored since junior year, just admit he wanted me too? No. It had to be the alcohol talking. “Are you saying this because you’re drunk?” I asked softly, my voice dipping with quiet disappointment. But then came that lazy, dangerous smile. “You know,” he murmured, “you’re really beautiful.” Heat rose to my cheeks. “T-thank you,” I whispered, my eyes dropping shyly. His finger lifted my chin, forcing me to meet his gaze. My knees buckled. The air thickened with tension. "I..." I started, but the word died in my throat. My heart hammered against my ribs. My eyes widened in shock as his lips crashed on mine. Thoughts scattered, replaced by the heat of his mouth. His hands found my waist, pulling me closer. I should stop. He’s drunk and this could mean nothing tomorrow But I couldn't. I held onto his suit as the kiss deepened—his tongue teasing, demanding. A soft whimper escaped me, and he smirked. His lips trailed down my neck, sucking and nipping. Then, he moved to my ear, and a gasp escaped me. This was Liam, the school's golden boy, and he was kissing me like he meant it. "Be my fling for tonight," Liam whispered against my skin, voice rough with passion. My breath hitched. My body tensed. My heart screamed no, but my fingers curled into the lapels of his suit. Slowly. Willingly. His eyes darkened. His lips parted. He leaned in again… And I didn’t pull away. I nodded, damning the consequences.
