Chloe
The next morning I woke up with a pain in my back from sleeping in that uncomfortable portion all night. Well, it was a bathtub, after all.
I went into my room and grabbed an outfit before stripping and taking a shower. I always tried not to stare at myself for too long.
Otherwise, I'd cry every second. Shaking away my thoughts, I slipped into the outfit and took my hair out of the ponytail I put it into.
I allowed my hair to flow freely down my back before applying a slight bit of makeup and leaving the house. And as usual, there was no one home.
My stepfather was probably already getting a headstart at the bar and my brother had classes today. So I caught a cab down the street and tried relaxing as it drove into the city.
I watched as traffic started coming in as business men and ladies rushed to get to work on time. The streets were crowded and I sighed.
The cab pulled up to my destination and I paid him before getting out and shutting the door. He drove away and I turned around, looking at the building in front of me.
"Here goes." I sighed, walking toward the doors and watching as they automatically opened for me.
I looked around the crowded waiting area before making a beeline over to the reception desk.
"Hi." I said shyly, brushing some hair out of my face and the lady turned toward me.
She was an old woman. Beautiful graying hair, deep wrinkles that fitted her gorgeously and beautiful gray eyes.
"Hi, Sweetie. What can I do for you?" She asked and I relaxed slightly at her kindness.
"I'm here too see m-my mom." I cussed myself mentally for stuttering and she smiled.
"What's her name, Honey?" She asked and I gave it to her. She typed a few things onto the computer in front of her before smiling at me.
"Go right ahead. Room 137." She said and I nodded, walking straight over to the elevator doors before hitting the button and waiting for the lift to come down.
I felt a presence stand beside me and I looked over and found Jake looking back at me. He gave me an apologetic look and I looked back ahead of me.
And right on cue, the doors opened as anxiety ate me up inside. Questions and scenes played out in my head and I forced my mind out of the clouds.
I stepped into the elevator and hit the button quickly before he could even think about getting in. But he still got in anyway and I groaned internally.
"Look, C, I'm really sorry." He said, standing right in front of me and I looked down at my feet, unable to take all of this in right now.
I knew that he was sorry. But I didn't know how long that sorrow would last before he stabbed me in the back again.
Instead, I just nodded slowly as if I understood.
"So are we good?" He asks.
I think long and hard, not wanting to respond verbally or I'd stumble over my words like I always did. I wanted to curse him out so badly but I didn't have the guts to.
"Yes." I replied quickly, glancing up at him and he smiled, coming closer and embracing me tightly.
I hugged him back, though all of the previous attraction was now gone. There was no more feelings whenever he hugged me.
Now it just meant nothing more than a hug. He had hurt me. Betrayed me more than anyone on this earth ever had. And here I was hugging him like a complete i***t.
But that was just the way my personality was made up. I couldn't stay angry at anyone and I hated making people feel bad for their mistakes.
So I just overlooked it and forgave all of them. And I kept on forgiving until they completely ran me over and treated me like garbage.
But I'd still remain kind hearted. I'll always find a way to make someone feel better. Because not having someone there when you need someone the most is devastating.
The elevator doors opened and I quickly pulled away from him as I saw an Elderly couple standing outside. I blushed and stepped out before quickly walking down the hallway.
I looked at the numbers on the rooms as I walked by and finally made it to my mother's room. Knocking on the door, I opened it and gave her a small smile.
She was laying on the bed with tube in both nostrils and wires running everywhere. She was deteriorating and it hurt my heart to see this.
"Hi, Mom." I greeted, going over to her bedside and sitting. I took her hand in mine said and she looked over at me.
She smiled, always loving when she got visitors in this lonely place. She gave me a small smile and reached her hand up to touch my face.
"Hey...Baby." She said, gasping for air between her words and this saddened me more.
"How are you feeling today?" I asked her.
"Like...shit." She joked and I laughed slightly. But I heard the seriousness behind her words.
"You'll get better." I smiled at her but on the inside I felt my soul crying. She noticed this and shook her head.
I got up and lifted her lightly and took her pillow before fluffing and adjusting it for her.
"I won't." She struggled to say. "I feel my time coming nearer."
I frowned at her words and her lack of positivity. She was never like this before. But being in a place like this for almost a year, I can see why.
"Pray." I smiled, kissing her hand and she returned it.
"I love you, Honey." She told me and my smile widened.
"I love you more, Mom." I responded.
The room fell into comfortable silence as I allowed her to rest a bit. The more she spoke was the more out-of-breath she became.
"Have you gotten a boyfriend yet?" She asked hopefully and I sighed.
"No, Mom. I don't even have friends anymore." I told her but immediately regretted it as I remembered that this would only stress her out.
"What happened?" She asked, turning onto her side so that she could look at me properly.
"It's nothing. Don't worry." I smiled and she narrowed her eyes playfully at me.
"What are you going to do today?" She asked.
"I have therapy in a few minutes. I can skip it if you want me to stay." I told her hopefully but she shook her head.
"Go ahead. I'll be okay." She said weakly.
I sighed, getting up slowly and placing a kiss on her head. I rubbed her cheek with my thumb for a while and she laughed.
"I'm suppose to do that to you." She said and I giggled. She was right. She always did this to me as a kid, for every bedtime or every tantrum.
"Bye, Mom." I said sadly and she smiled.
"Bye, Baby." She said,
I got out and walked to the door, smiling at her for a final time before leaving and taking the stairs this time to avoid any awkward situations.
Thankfully I made it out of the hospital and walked down the busy street. Today was hectic for everyone as it was the end of the month, meaning that today was pay-day.
I side-stepped to avoid a running man and stuffed my hands into the pockets of my sweatpants. I looked down, avoiding the stares of people and I sighed.
Fuck them all.
I continued down the street, anxiety eating away at my conscience and I thanked God as I saw the building come into my view.
Quickly, I went inside and sat down, awaiting the call of my therapist. This room was a large waiting room with only a few more people in here.
It was painted in a bright pink colour and the furniture was either black or a lighter pink.
The therapist stepped out of her office and when she saw me already waiting she smiled. She signaled with her hand for me to come over to her and I reluctantly did.
I dragged my legs toward her and she placed her hand on my shoulder, leading me toward her office.
"We have a shared session today." She said and I pursed my lips.
"Why?" I asked her.
"Because I think it would be better this way. Maybe you won't feel as uncomfortable." She told me and I sighed.
"Sure, because I just love people." I responded sarcastically and she laughed before narrowing her eyes at me.
"Be nice when he gets here. The state required that he took my sessions to help him. But I think it's more of a punishment." She said, sounding excited and I didn't quite care.
We went into the room and I took my usual seat on the couch in the corner. I laid back and stared at the ceiling as I waited for her to start her stupid questions.
"So how has this past week been?" She asked, putting her glasses on and grabbing her notepad.
"I-"
Someone swung the door open angrily and I looked up quickly. My eyes widened in shock as I saw Hayden enter the room.
His face wasn't as chilled as it was when I spoke to him that night. Instead he looked completely angry. And hot.
His hair was now out in a curly afro. The sides were faded a little to give it a little lift but the length of his hair covered his eyes.
He looked cute. He wore a casual black shirt with an unknown logo on the back and black, ripped jeans. He had three rings on his fingers and diamond, stud earrings in his ears.
He didn't even notice me as he slammed the door shut and took a seat directly next to me.
The therapist looked like she was daydreaming as she stared at him with a smile. You could tell she was checking him out and I felt uncomfortable witnessing this.
She wasn't an old lady. But she had a husband and kids at home. Or so she says.
