Criminals Without a Conscience

Chapter One: The Woman in the Lake             Footsteps slowly creaked every step they took; echoing throughout the thin walls of Odessa's apartment. From the master bedroom, where she rested cuddled up in her purple velvet, duvet cover, she could hear the sound of footsteps as they scurry across the kitchen floor.     Odessa quickly, but quietly stood to her feet; clenching onto the steel bat she kept near her mattress, taking slow and stealthy strides. Walking into the kitchen, she could smell the aroma of the coffee being made. Odessa scrunched up her face in confusion.    "Good morning, Essa!" Nadia exclaimed. Odessa had forgotten that she had given Nadia an extra key, which resulted in the situation.    "Seriously, you scared the s**t out of me, Nadia!" Odessa exclaimed in annoyance. Odessa had then set the bat down gently, on the polished marble tile near the hallway closet; making a mental note to bring it back into her room. Gradually making her way to the cupboard filled with coffee mugs; grabbing one and filling it with coffee.     "I thought you were a f*****g murderer Nadia. Next time warn me, sweetheart," Odessa muttered. "Oh, don't be such a drama queen. You're fine! I bet today our worlds will change drastically!" Nadia declared. Odessa scrunched up her nose; muttering, "I literally just got back three days ago from my family vacation."     "Keep it down in there!" A third voice rang out. Upon hearing that comment, Odessa's phone began to ring violently from her bedroom. Odessa grumbled; got up and walked into her bedroom grabbing the phone of her nightstand and replied, "Yes."    "Is this Dr. Odessa Young?" A deep husky voice asked. She shivered pleasantly at hearing the sound. "Yes, this is her. May I ask who this is?" She inquired. "I'm Agent Jaxon Greenwood from the Federal Bureau of Investigation." Jaxon directed. "So," Odessa muttered, slightly annoyed.      "We need your specific set of abilities to help us identify a set of remains that were found in Lake Washington, " He explained. "Yes, please have your team bring the remains to the Maples Criminology Institution and I'll see what I can do, " Odessa said softly.      "Meet me at thirty, Dr. Young, " Jaxon said. "And I'll see you, Agent Greenwood, " Odessa responded; hanging up the phone. Odessa made her way back into the kitchen and to her coffee to drink the rest. "Who was it?" Nadia asked. Odessa slowly lifted her brown eyes from her mug to Nadia's eyes.     As if in slow motion, Odessa sighed and responded, "Dr. Vivian, is making me work with the FBI now. A new agent named Jaxon Greenwood called me asking for my assistance in a case." “That’s amazing! We haven’t had any exciting cases since the last agent who worked with us.” Nadia beamed with excitement. "Dude, the guy was like 70!" Odessa exaggerated. Angrily stomping out of her room, Emelia barges into the kitchen, shouting, “WOULD YOU f*****g SHUT YOUR MOUTHS ALREADY!? I HAD NO f*****g SLEEP BECAUSE OF YOU TWO PARTYING LAST NIGHT!” "Partying?" Odessa asked, faking innocence. "Whatever do you mean?" She added while smirking.     Emelia walked over to the cupboard filled with coffee mugs; snatching one and poured herself a cup of coffee.
