The Fall of Moonfang
The moon had always watched over the Kingdom of Moonfang. Tonight, it bled. A crimson glow washed over the towering silver spires of Silvermoon Palace, painting its white marble walls the color of fresh blood. The banners bearing the crescent wolf fluttered violently in the icy wind as thunder rolled across the heavens. High above the palace, wolves howled in unease. Inside the Hall of Kings, silence reigned. King Adrian Moonfang stood before the ancient Moon Throne, his broad shoulders draped in a silver cloak embroidered with the royal crest. His piercing blue eyes were fixed on the enormous stained-glass window overlooking the kingdom. Beyond it, thousands of lights glittered across the valley. His people were asleep. They had no idea that this would be the last peaceful night they would ever know. Behind him, the heavy doors creaked open. A woman stepped inside. Luna Nancy Moonfang. She wore a flowing white gown trimmed with silver thread, and in her arms rested a newborn wrapped in soft blue blankets. The infant slept peacefully, unaware of the burden fate had placed upon her tiny shoulders. Nancy smiled gently. "You've been standing here for hours." Adrian turned, his stern expression softening the moment he saw his wife and daughter. "They're finally asleep?" Nancy nodded. "For now." She crossed the hall and placed the child into Adrian's waiting arms. The great Alpha King who had led warriors into countless battles suddenly looked terrified. Not of enemies. Not of war. But of holding something so fragile. Nancy laughed quietly. "You command seven packs without fear, yet your own daughter makes you nervous." "I know how to fight armies," Adrian replied with a smile. "I have no idea how to hold a princess." Nancy adjusted the blanket. "Like this." The baby's tiny fingers wrapped around Adrian's thumb. He froze. His heart, hardened by years of leadership and sacrifice, melted in an instant. "She has your eyes," he whispered. Nancy shook her head. "No." She looked at the sleeping child. "They belong to Moonfang." For several long moments, the royal couple stood together in silence, watching their daughter dream. Outside, another wolf howled. This time, it sounded like a warning. The palace doors burst open. Commander Marcus entered at a run, his silver armor streaked with dust and rain. He immediately dropped to one knee. "My King." Adrian frowned. Marcus never entered without permission. Something was wrong. "What happened?" Marcus hesitated. Then he looked toward the child. Nancy's smile disappeared. "Marcus..." "The eastern watchtower has fallen." The words echoed through the throne room. Adrian's expression hardened. "How?" "There was no warning." Marcus struggled to steady his breathing. "Our scouts never returned." Nancy's pulse quickened. "Bandits?" Marcus slowly shook his head. "No." He looked Adrian directly in the eyes. "It's Nightfang." Silence. A cold silence that seemed to freeze the very air. Adrian handed the baby back to Nancy. "How many?" Marcus swallowed. "All of them." Nancy's breath caught. "Victor..." Adrian turned toward the stained-glass window again. For years, Victor Nightfang had publicly sworn loyalty to the Moonfang Crown. They had signed peace treaties. Shared festivals. Fought beside each other. Had it all been a lie? Before anyone could speak again— BOOM! The palace shook violently. Dust rained from the ceiling. Another explosion followed. This one much closer. Outside came screams. Hundreds of them. Then— The unmistakable sound of battle horns. Marcus rushed to the window. "My King..." Flames erupted throughout the lower city. Thousands of black banners poured through the gates like a tide of darkness. Nightfang. They were already inside the capital. "The gates..." Marcus whispered. "They've opened the gates." Adrian's eyes narrowed. "No enemy army could have breached Silvermoon's walls." His voice grew dangerously quiet. "Someone betrayed us." Another explosion shattered the western tower. Pieces of burning stone crashed into the courtyard below. The palace bells began ringing. One after another. An emergency signal that had not sounded in over two hundred years. Nancy instinctively held Daisy closer. The baby stirred but did not wake. Almost as if the Moon Goddess herself was protecting her sleep. Adrian turned toward Marcus. "Evacuate the palace." Marcus hesitated. "My King—" "Now." Marcus saluted. "Yes, Your Majesty." He sprinted from the hall. Adrian crossed the room and opened an ancient wooden chest hidden beneath the throne. Inside rested three objects. A silver crown. An ornate ring. And a small crescent-shaped pendant. Nancy stared. "The royal relics..." Adrian lifted the pendant. "This belonged to my mother." He gently fastened it around Daisy's tiny neck. "If Moonfang falls tonight..." Nancy interrupted sharply. "It won't." Their eyes met. She was trying to convince herself as much as him. Adrian smiled sadly. "I pray you're right." Suddenly— A loud crash echoed outside the chamber. The great palace doors exploded inward. Royal Guards stumbled across the marble floor, bleeding from deep claw wounds. Behind them walked a tall man dressed entirely in black armor. His silver hair gleamed beneath the crimson moonlight. His amber eyes were cold. Victor Nightfang. He stepped over the bodies without emotion. Slowly. Confidently. As though he already owned the palace. Adrian's voice thundered across the throne room. "Victor." Victor smiled. "Your Majesty." Nancy's fingers tightened around Daisy. "What have you done?" Victor looked almost disappointed. "I liberated a kingdom." Adrian drew the legendary Moonfang Blade from its scabbard. The sword shimmered with silver light. "You murdered innocent people." Victor shrugged. "History never remembers the price of peace." Outside... The screams continued. The Kingdom of Moonfang was burning. And the longest night in werewolf history had only just begun. Victor Nightfang stopped a few paces from the Moon Throne, his black cloak sweeping across the polished marble floor. Behind him, more Nightfang warriors poured into the throne room, their armor stained with blood and soot. Some carried broken Moonfang banners as trophies, while others dragged wounded royal guards behind them. The smell of smoke drifted through the shattered doorway. Silvermoon Palace, the heart of the werewolf kingdom for centuries, was burning. Adrian stepped down from the throne dais, the Moonfang Blade gleaming in his hand. "You still have time to stop this," he said, his voice calm despite the chaos surrounding them. "Call off your soldiers, surrender, and answer for your crimes." Victor laughed, the sound echoing through the vast hall. "Crimes?" he asked. "Tell me, Adrian... did you ever wonder why the other Alphas smiled at your feasts but whispered behind your back?" Adrian remained silent. Victor continued. "You believed unity made you strong. You believed every pack wanted peace." He shook his head. "Peace is a dream told by kings who have forgotten what wolves truly are." "We are protectors," Adrian replied. "No." Victor's golden eyes flashed. "We are predators." Without warning, he lunged. Steel crashed against steel. The impact echoed through the throne room like thunder. The force pushed Adrian several steps backward, but he recovered instantly, sweeping his blade in a graceful arc aimed at Victor's side. Victor blocked it with his black sword. Sparks exploded into the air. Nancy instinctively stepped back, shielding Daisy against her chest. Marcus reappeared at the doorway with nearly twenty royal guards. "My King!" he shouted. Adrian didn't look away from Victor. "Take the Queen and the princess." Nancy immediately shook her head. "No." "Nancy." "I'm not leaving you." "You have to." "I said no!" Another explosion rocked the palace. A stained-glass window shattered, sending thousands of colored fragments raining across the floor. Moonlight poured into the throne room. The Blood Moon now hung directly above the palace. Victor smiled. "Even the Moon Goddess has abandoned you." Adrian answered with another strike. The Moonfang Blade moved like liquid silver, forcing Victor backward for the first time. Their swords clashed again and again. Neither Alpha gave ground. Marcus hurried toward Nancy. "My Queen, please." Nancy looked between her husband and the frightened faces of the guards. Every instinct screamed at her to stay. Every heartbeat told her she belonged beside Adrian. Then Daisy stirred. The infant opened her tiny silver-blue eyes. Nancy froze. For a single heartbeat, the room seemed to disappear. Only her daughter remained. Adrian noticed. Their eyes met across the battlefield. No words were spoken. None were needed. Nancy finally nodded. Tears filled her eyes. Marcus stepped forward and gently took Daisy into his arms. "I'll protect her with my life." Adrian smiled faintly. "I know." Nancy leaned down and kissed her daughter's forehead. "My brave little moon..." She reached beneath Daisy's blanket and tucked the silver pendant safely against the baby's chest. "It will guide you home one day." Marcus adjusted the child carefully. "There's a hidden passage beneath the western tower." Adrian nodded. "Go." Marcus turned toward the secret corridor concealed behind the throne. Just as he reached it— A spear flew through the air. Marcus twisted aside. The weapon slammed into the stone wall only inches from Daisy. Every guard drew their weapons. Standing in the broken doorway was another figure. Commander Kael. Victor's deadliest general. His expression remained cold. "You aren't leaving." Victor never looked away from Adrian. "Kill anyone who escapes." Kael raised his sword. The Nightfang warriors charged. Chaos erupted. The throne room became a battlefield. Steel rang endlessly. Royal guards formed a defensive wall around Marcus and the infant princess. They fought desperately, but the Nightfang soldiers outnumbered them nearly three to one. Nancy snatched a fallen sword from the floor. Marcus stared. "My Queen—" "They're my people too." She stepped beside the guards. The first enemy reached her. Nancy spun gracefully. Her blade flashed once. The warrior collapsed. Another attacked. She ducked beneath his strike before driving her sword into his chest. Marcus had almost forgotten. Before becoming Luna... Nancy had been one of Moonfang's finest warriors. Victor noticed. "I always underestimated you." Nancy answered by throwing a dagger directly at him. Victor tilted his head. The blade missed by less than an inch. His smile disappeared. "You'll regret that." Meanwhile, Adrian seized the opening. His sword slashed across Victor's shoulder. Black blood stained the armor. For the first time that night... Victor was wounded. The Nightfang warriors gasped. Their Alpha had never been injured in battle. Victor looked down at the cut. Then he smiled. "So..." He slowly removed his torn cloak. "...the stories about the Moonfang Blade were true." Adrian tightened his grip. "This ends tonight." Victor's laughter filled the hall. "No." His eyes shifted toward Marcus. "It begins with her." Every Nightfang warrior suddenly ignored the King. Instead... They all rushed toward the baby. Marcus's heart stopped. He turned and ran toward the hidden passage while the royal guards sacrificed themselves one after another to block the advancing soldiers. Nancy screamed. "Marcus!" "I'm going!" A guard slammed the secret door open. Dark stone steps descended beneath the palace. Marcus disappeared into the tunnel with Daisy. Kael growled. "After him!" Five assassins broke away from the battle and disappeared into the darkness. Nancy's face turned pale. "They'll catch him..." Adrian's expression hardened. "They won't." With a mighty roar that shook the palace walls, Adrian released his Alpha aura. An invisible wave of power exploded through the throne room. Several Nightfang warriors fell to one knee, struggling to breathe. Even Kael staggered. Only Victor remained standing. The two kings stared at each other. Outside... The city burned. Inside... The fate of the werewolf kingdom rested on the next few moments. Victor slowly raised his sword. "Let's finish what destiny began. The throne room trembled beneath the force of Adrian Moonfang's Alpha aura. Invisible pressure rippled across the polished marble floor, cracking ancient stone as it surged toward Victor Nightfang. Every torch along the walls flickered violently before bursting into brilliant silver flames. The surviving Nightfang warriors stumbled backward. Some collapsed to one knee, gasping for breath beneath the overwhelming authority of the King of Moonfang. Victor remained standing. His amber eyes narrowed with amusement rather than fear. "So," he murmured. "The legendary Alpha Aura of the Moonfang Kings." He tightened his grip around his black sword. "I've waited years to see it." Adrian said nothing. His eyes never left his enemy. He had ruled for nearly two decades, settling disputes between packs and preventing wars that could have destroyed the werewolf kingdom. He had never desired conquest. He had wanted peace. Now peace lay dying outside these walls. With a roar that shook the palace, Adrian charged. The Moonfang Blade sliced through the air like a streak of silver lightning. Victor barely managed to raise his sword in time. CLANG! The impact blasted both Alphas apart. The marble floor beneath Victor's feet shattered as he slid backward several meters. For the first time that night, uncertainty crossed his face. Adrian pressed the attack. Every strike was faster than the last. Steel flashed. Sparks rained across the throne room. Victor blocked one blow, then another, but Adrian's relentless assault forced him steadily toward the broken stained-glass window overlooking the burning city. Outside, Silvermoon was in chaos. Homes burned. Children cried. Warriors fought desperately in the streets below. The kingdom Adrian had sworn to protect was disappearing before his eyes. Rage surged through him. He swung again. Victor's sword flew from his hand. It spun across the marble floor before coming to rest beneath the throne. Nightfang soldiers stared in disbelief. Their Alpha had been disarmed. Adrian pointed the Moonfang Blade directly at Victor's throat. "It's over." For a heartbeat... Silence. Then— A sharp pain exploded through Adrian's chest. His eyes widened. He looked down. The tip of a silver spear protruded from his armor. Blood spread slowly across his royal cloak. The throne room fell silent. Adrian turned his head. Standing several feet behind him was one of his own Royal Captains. Captain Rowan. The man Adrian had promoted ten years earlier. The man who had sworn an oath to protect the Moonfang Crown until his final breath. Rowan's hands trembled as he held the bloodstained spear. "I'm... sorry..." Adrian's voice was barely above a whisper. "You..." Rowan lowered his head. "We were starving." His eyes filled with tears. "Victor promised our families food... land... a future." Victor calmly retrieved his fallen sword. "You see, Adrian?" He brushed dust from his armor. "You believed loyalty could be earned through kindness." He smiled coldly. "I discovered it could be bought." Before Adrian could recover— Victor drove his blade deep into Adrian's side. The King staggered backward. Nancy screamed. "ADRIAN!" She fought desperately toward him, cutting down two Nightfang warriors who blocked her path. Marcus, now deep within the secret passage beneath the palace, heard her cry echo through the stone tunnels. His heart clenched. He looked down at the sleeping infant in his arms. Princess Daisy remained blissfully unaware of the nightmare unfolding above. Marcus whispered, "I gave my word." He tightened his grip on the child. "No matter what happens..." "I'll protect you." Above them, Adrian dropped to one knee. Blood pooled beneath him. Victor stood over the wounded King. "You were never weak." Victor admitted quietly. "You were simply born in the wrong age." Adrian coughed, blood staining his lips. "You'll never unite this kingdom." Victor knelt beside him. "No." "I'll rule it." Their eyes locked. One king. One usurper. Two completely different visions of leadership. Victor raised his sword. Nancy reached Adrian at last. She threw herself between them. "No!" Victor hesitated. Nancy glared at him through tears. "You've won." She held Adrian close. "Please..." "Don't do this." Victor's expression hardened. "If I leave him alive..." "He becomes hope." "I cannot allow hope to survive." Before he could strike— A horn echoed from outside the palace. Three long blasts. Kael hurried into the throne room. "My Alpha." Victor frowned. "What is it?" "The princess has escaped." For the first time all night... Victor's composure cracked. "What?" "Our assassins followed Marcus into the western tunnels..." Kael paused. "They lost him." Victor's face darkened. "No..." His gaze shifted toward Nancy. She smiled through her tears. "You've already lost." Victor's hand clenched around his sword. "The child will die." Nancy slowly shook her head. "You'll spend the rest of your life chasing a ghost." Victor turned sharply toward Kael. "Seal every road." "Search every forest." "I don't care how many years it takes." "Find the child." Kael bowed. "Yes, my Alpha." Victor looked once more at Adrian. "I'll finish this later." Without another word, he turned and walked from the throne room. His army followed. Only silence remained. The flames outside continued to consume Silvermoon Palace. Nancy knelt beside Adrian, tears falling freely. He reached up with trembling fingers and gently touched her face. "I'm sorry..." She shook her head fiercely. "No." "You have nothing to apologize for." "I couldn't protect them." "You did." She smiled through her tears. "You gave them nineteen years of peace." Adrian's breathing grew weaker. "Daisy..." Nancy leaned closer. "I'll find her." "Tell her..." He struggled for breath. "...never let hatred decide..." His voice faded. "...the kind of Queen..." A final breath escaped him. "...she becomes." His hand slipped from Nancy's cheek. The last King of Moonfang was gone. Nancy lowered her forehead against his. For a long time, she did not move. Outside, the Blood Moon disappeared behind thick clouds. Rain began to fall. It washed over the burning kingdom. It washed over the fallen king. And somewhere beyond the palace walls, a tiny princess slept peacefully in Marcus's arms as he disappeared into the darkness of Whispering Forest. The kingdom believed the Moonfang bloodline had ended that night. They were wrong. Far away, hidden beneath the roots of an ancient oak, Marcus paused as the rain began to fall. Daisy suddenly opened her eyes. For a brief instant... Her silver-blue irises reflected the moonlight with an unnatural glow. The silver pendant around her neck pulsed once. Then went still. Marcus stared in stunned silence. "The Moon Goddess..." he whispered. "She's still watching." Behind him, deep within the forest, dozens of amber eyes slowly opened in the darkness. The hunt had already begun.
