Mother?"
The word escaped Lyra's lips before she realized she had spoken aloud.
The gentle voice faded into silence, leaving only the soft hum of silver light rising from the staircase. She stood motionless at its entrance, her heart pounding against her ribs.
For years she had dismissed the dreams as nothing more than fragments of imagination. A woman's lullaby beneath a full moon. Warm hands brushing through her hair. A voice promising that no darkness would last forever.
Now she knew those dreams had been memories.
Behind her, the sanctuary remained frozen.
No one dared take another step.
Victor's crimson eyes never left Lyra.
His expression had changed completely.
The confidence that had carried him through the battle was gone, replaced by something far more dangerous.
Fear.
Not fear of Lyra herself.
Fear of what she might become.
"No," he whispered.
"This cannot happen."
His voice rose into a furious roar.
"I destroyed Moonfang! I buried its bloodline!"
Dark energy exploded around him.
The black mist surrounding his body thickened until it swallowed the floor beneath his feet.
The temperature inside the sanctuary dropped sharply.
Cracks spread across the stone walls as the pressure from his Alpha aura intensified.
Several younger warriors stumbled backward, unable to withstand it.
Even Selena struggled to breathe.
Kael immediately stepped in front of her.
"Stay behind me."
"What about Lyra?"
Kael looked toward the staircase.
"I don't think anything can reach her now."
Victor charged.
His sword cut through the air with terrifying speed, aiming straight for Lyra's back.
Before he had crossed half the distance, one of the ancient stone wolves sprang to life.
The massive guardian landed between Victor and the staircase with a thunderous crash.
Its silver eyes blazed.
A deep growl rolled from its chest.
Victor stopped instantly.
The guardian was easily twice the size of an ordinary wolf.
Its body remained carved from stone, yet every movement carried the grace of a living beast.
Another guardian stepped forward.
Then another.
Within seconds, six enormous stone wolves stood shoulder to shoulder, forming an unbreakable wall before Lyra.
"They're protecting her," Selena whispered.
Aldric smiled faintly.
"They protected every Moonfang ruler."
Victor tightened his grip on his sword.
"They're only statues."
He attacked again.
His blade struck the nearest guardian with enough force to split solid rock.
Instead of breaking apart, the stone wolf barely moved.
The guardian turned its head toward Victor.
Its glowing eyes narrowed.
Then it swiped a massive stone paw.
Victor barely avoided the attack.
The claws slammed into the floor, carving deep trenches through the ancient stone.
Kael watched silently.
"I've never seen magic like this."
Hogan nodded.
"Neither has anyone alive."
Victor landed several meters away.
His breathing had become uneven.
For the first time in years, someone had forced him onto the defensive.
He glared at Aldric.
"You knew."
"I knew the sanctuary would awaken."
"You should have destroyed it."
Aldric shook his head.
"It was never mine to destroy."
Meanwhile, Lyra slowly descended the spiral staircase.
The deeper she walked, the quieter the sounds of battle became.
The walls surrounding her were covered with murals illuminated by silver crystals embedded in the stone.
She paused before the first carving.
It depicted a king placing a glowing crown upon a young woman's head while wolves from countless different packs bowed together.
No chains.
No fear.
Only unity.
The second mural showed the same queen leading warriors into battle beneath a silver moon.
The third depicted a wolf standing alone against an endless tide of darkness.
Each image felt strangely familiar.
As though she had seen them before.
Her fingers brushed lightly across the ancient stone.
The murals shimmered.
Suddenly the figures began to move.
The king smiled.
The queen raised her sword.
The wolves howled beneath the moon.
Lyra gasped and stepped back.
The images returned to stone.
"What is this place?"
A voice answered her.
"The memory of your ancestors."
She turned sharply.
No one stood behind her.
The voice had come from everywhere at once.
"You carry their blood."
"You carry their duty."
She swallowed nervously.
"Who are you?"
"I am the Keeper."
A figure slowly emerged from the silver light ahead.
An elderly man dressed in royal armor stood waiting at the bottom of the staircase.
His body appeared transparent, as though woven from moonlight itself.
Yet his piercing silver eyes were unmistakably alive.
He inclined his head respectfully.
"Welcome home, Princess Lyra."
Far above, another explosion shook the sanctuary.
Victor had abandoned his sword.
Dark claws extended from his hands as his wolf fought to break free.
His crimson eyes glowed brighter with every passing second.
Hogan recognized the signs immediately.
"He's losing control."
"No," Aldric replied quietly.
"He's surrendering control."
Kael frowned.
"What's the difference?"
"The wolf isn't consuming him."
Aldric's face darkened.
"He's allowing something else to take its place."
A cold silence settled over the sanctuary.
Even the awakened guardians became still.
Victor slowly lifted his head.
His smile no longer looked human.
"You've all forgotten."
His voice echoed strangely, as though another voice spoke beneath his own.
"There are powers older than Moonfang."
Black veins spread across his neck.
His pupils disappeared completely.
The darkness around him surged like living smoke.
Then, for the first time since the battle began, the ancient guardians stepped backward.
The sanctuary fell into an eerie silence.
Victor remained motionless at the center of the hall, his head bowed as black mist spiraled around him. The air grew heavy, making every breath feel like an impossible task.
Kael instinctively stepped in front of Aldric and Selena.
"This isn't normal."
"No," Hogan replied, his eyes fixed on Victor. "It isn't."
The black veins continued spreading beneath Victor's skin until they reached his face. His crimson eyes darkened into an endless void.
Then he smiled.
It was not Victor's smile.
A cold, unfamiliar voice escaped his lips.
"So... the Moonfang bloodline lives after all."
Every warrior in the sanctuary stiffened.
Aldric's face turned pale.
"Who are you?"
The creature laughed softly.
"You have forgotten me."
"I have not forgotten any of you."
Its gaze slowly swept across the sanctuary before settling on the staircase Lyra had descended.
"I have waited a very long time for this night."
Without warning, Victor's body disappeared.
He reappeared directly before one of the ancient stone guardians.
His fist struck the guardian's chest.
The impact exploded through the sanctuary.
Cracks raced across the guardian's stone body.
Everyone stared in disbelief.
Moments earlier, Victor's sword had failed to damage the guardian.
Now one punch had nearly shattered it.
Kael's expression hardened.
"His strength..."
"It's doubled," Hogan finished.
"No."
Aldric slowly shook his head.
"It isn't Victor's strength."
The damaged guardian regained its footing and lunged forward.
Victor caught both of its massive jaws with his bare hands.
Stone groaned beneath the pressure.
With a thunderous roar, he threw the guardian across the sanctuary.
It crashed through two pillars before collapsing into a heap of broken stone.
Selena gasped.
"Impossible..."
The remaining guardians immediately surrounded Victor.
Their glowing silver eyes blazed with ancient purpose.
One after another, they attacked.
Victor moved like living darkness.
He slipped between them effortlessly, striking with unnatural speed.
Within seconds, two more guardians lay broken across the sanctuary floor.
Kael exchanged a grim glance with Hogan.
"If those guardians can't stop him..."
"He'll reach Lyra."
Without another word, both Alpha Kings charged together.
Kael attacked from the front while Hogan circled to Victor's blind side.
Their swords struck simultaneously.
Victor caught Kael's blade in one hand.
He stopped Hogan's attack with the other.
Neither sword moved another inch.
Victor slowly lifted his head.
"I expected more."
A violent shockwave burst from his body.
Kael and Hogan were thrown backward, crashing into opposite walls.
Blood trickled from the corner of Kael's mouth.
He wiped it away and stood.
"So this is your true power."
Victor laughed.
"You've seen nothing."
Far below the sanctuary, Lyra followed the spectral guardian through a long corridor carved entirely from white stone.
The walls shimmered with countless silver crystals.
Ancient murals lined both sides of the passage.
Unlike those on the staircase, these paintings moved continuously.
She watched the first Moonfang king unite rival packs beneath a single banner.
She saw queens leading armies against creatures that looked nothing like ordinary wolves.
Massive beasts with crimson eyes emerged from endless darkness, forcing every pack to fight together.
The final mural stopped her completely.
A lone warrior stood before a great black gate sealed by silver chains.
Beyond the gate waited an ocean of shadows.
The warrior raised a glowing sword.
Then the image froze.
Lyra frowned.
"What is that?"
The Keeper followed her gaze.
"Our greatest sacrifice."
She looked at him.
"My ancestors fought monsters?"
"They fought something far worse."
He continued walking.
"They fought hatred itself."
Lyra struggled to understand.
"I don't..."
"You will."
At the end of the corridor stood enormous silver doors engraved with the royal crest of Moonfang.
Unlike the entrance above, these doors had no handles.
The Keeper stopped before them.
"For centuries, only one member of the royal bloodline could open these doors."
Lyra stared at the intricate carvings.
"What lies beyond them?"
"The truth."
She hesitated.
"I'm afraid."
The old spirit smiled kindly.
"Every ruler who stood where you stand said the same words."
He stepped aside.
"But courage is not the absence of fear."
"It is choosing to walk forward despite it."
Lyra took a deep breath.
Slowly, she placed both hands against the ancient doors.
For a heartbeat...
Nothing happened.
Then the crescent-shaped birthmark on her shoulder began to glow.
Silver light spread from her palms into the carvings.
The doors trembled.
Deep within the mountain, unseen gears began turning for the first time in nineteen years.
Above, everyone in the sanctuary heard the sound.
Victor's smile vanished.
"No."
He looked toward the staircase.
"She's opening it."
Darkness erupted around him once again.
He abandoned the battle completely and sprinted toward the hidden passage.
Kael forced himself to his feet despite the pain.
"We can't let him reach her."
Hogan nodded.
Together, they gave chase.
But Victor was faster.
Much faster.
He reached the top of the staircase just as the silver doors deep beneath the mountain slowly began to open.
A brilliant light burst from the chamber beyond, flooding the entire passage.
Victor stopped where he stood.
For the first time since the battle began...
Fear crossed his face.
From somewhere inside the chamber came the deep, resonant howl of an ancient wolf that had not been heard for thousands of years.
