Alex’s eyes brightened up, this system was gold but he didn’t know why it was given to someone like him.
“I don’t deserve this.” Alex said, clenching his fists. He was worthless, and he couldn’t even save his own mother.
“Now you have another chance” An unfamiliar voice echoed in Alex’s ears, and he turned around, thinking someone had spoken behind him.
Seeing no one, Alex had an inkling of what could have happened.
“System?” He muttered.
The voice came again in a clearer tone. “You have the chance to save another person. There’s no luxury of waiting anymore.”
A refreshing feeling came over Alex, and he nodded. This had to be part of the system upgrade, and he couldn’t help but wonder if there would be any more upgrades in the future.
“Yes, there would be future upgrades.” The system answered.
Alex nodded, “What can I call you?” He asked the voice.
“I can only be named by the host.” The voice replied back.
Now he had something to think about, he needed to name the system.
“Aura.” Alex muttered, nodding his head. “Yes, I’d name you Aura. Would you like that?”
“Thank you.”
Noting the reply, Alex got to work. He had found the food supplies for those people, and he had been able to gather a few seeds.
It was worth a while.
Alex smiled. “And I did it in less than two days.” He commended himself.
The next thing he needed now was a way to transport these goods, especially this large package.
“You can purchase a storage space from the system shop.” Aura noted, giving him the right information.
Alex pondered, raising his gaze. “Would I be able to store physical things in that kind of space.”
“Yes.” It was a simple reply but that was all he needed.
“Do I even have enough gold?” The last time he checked, he had not remembered receiving any notifications on the amount of gold he had obtained.
Then Alex opened his stats box. There he saw it, in the far right corner, there was a number by a gold coin icon.
“That last time I checked, there was nothing there. Where did I get a hundred gold coins from, Aura?” Alex was a bit shocked and he realized just how useful this system could be.
Maybe God truly did have a plan.
“How much do I need to pay for a storage space?” Alex asked.
Aura chimed in his head. “You need ten gold coins for a block of space. A block of space can store up to three medium boxed sized items.”
Alex nodded. It was good enough. He simply needed to store just five boxes of food supplies.
“I wonder why there are so many things in here.” Alex thought to himself.
It somehow made it feel like this building was planned to be some sort of resort or some new safe haven for a reserved number of people.
Without thinking much of it, Alex made his decision. “I’m getting twenty gold coins worth of space.”
In the next moment, a light appeared before his eyes, and then something happened. Alex could see it manifest right before his eyes.
He was no longer standing in that room. Instead he was standing in what looked like space.
“What is this place?” Alex muttered and as usual, Aura was there with a speedy response.
“It’s your storage space. The items you need to store can be mentally placed here. You place your hand on the item and then picture this space.” Aura said in a smooth tone.
“Alright then. This is better than I expected.” Alex muttered to himself, but he paused in his thoughts. “It doesn’t mean that I have to relax, there are still people like Lois out in this more and maybe even more like Jack.” Alex thought, raising his hand to his chin.
“I need to learn how to take my stance.” Alex exhaled. He had found the items they needed in record time, so he would take the rest of the time to sharpen his skills.
The environment changed, and Alex appeared back in the room.
He placed his hand on each box and right before him, they vanished.
Alex imagined himself right in his space again, and right before him, the environment changed.
“This skill is very useful, Aura. It’s just what I need. Am I still in the room?” Alex asked as the whole experience felt so surreal that he wanted to immediately try some new things.
At the end of his question, a screen appeared in front of him, and Alex raised his gaze. It was an image of himself standing outside the room with his eyes closed.
“Only your subconscious mind is transported to your space.” Aura said in a calm voice.
“Oh.” Alex was disappointed, but then his face brightened up. “Hey Aura, do you think my whole body can be transported to this space?”
“Yes.” Aura answered.
“How is that possible?” Alex said.
“You can transport yourself by…” A screeching sound echoed before Aura could finish talking.
Alex frowned. “I didn’t get that please.”
The sound started when Aura was just about to tell him the qualifications.
When she wanted to tell him again, the sound came again.
“I still didn’t hear that, Aura.” Alex sighed.
Then some sort of robotic sighed echoed, as if the system was emulating his movements.
“I don’t think I am able to tell you until you reach a certain level but I am sure that you can transport yourself to this space.” Aura finally said and this time, there was no strange sound.
“Okay then.” Alex answered and he opened his eyes, appearing back in the room.
He waited for five minutes, wondering if he could hear the sound of that monster.
Then, Alex looked outside the window, the infected had gone, and the sun was almost disappearing. If he decided to stay in a place like this, then there was a high risk that the place would get overrun through the night.
“Hey Aura, what do you think I can do?” Alex muttered.
“Find a better shelter.” Aura replied.
Alex nodded in response. “That’s exactly what I thought, and maybe I can finally upgrade my sword skills.”
A chime echoed in his ears. It was a system notification.
[Sub-goal detected: Upgrade Level 1 Sword skill to Level 2.]
