The forensic audit

The message from Damien came at 3:17 a.m. and changed everything I thought I knew. I was already awake, staring at the ceiling in the dark master bedroom, when my phone lit up on the nightstand. My heart jumped the moment I saw his name. We had not spoken properly since the gala. He had been avoiding me, believing I had fully committed to Victor and the public image of our growing family. But this message was different. It was short and urgent. I decrypted the drive. You need to see this. Meet me at the old boathouse in thirty minutes. Come alone. I slipped out of bed carefully, making sure not to wake Victor who was sleeping soundly beside me. My hands shook as I pulled on a dark hoodie and jeans. The mansion was quiet except for the distant hum of the security system. I moved through the halls like a ghost, avoiding the main cameras by sticking to the servant passages that Lena had once shown me. Every step felt risky, but the fear in Damien’s message pushed me forward. The old boathouse sat at the edge of the private lake on the property, hidden behind thick trees. It was rarely used and far enough from the main house that we might not be seen. When I arrived, Damien was already there, pacing back and forth under the dim light of his phone. His hair was messy, his eyes red like he had not slept in days. The moment he saw me, something raw flashed across his face, pain mixed with urgency. “Clara,” he said, his voice low and rough. “I should not have asked you to come. It is too dangerous. But I did not know who else to tell.” I stepped closer, my arms wrapped around myself against the cold night air. “What did you find? You look like you have seen a ghost.” He let out a bitter laugh and ran a hand through his hair. “Maybe I have.” He pulled out a laptop from his bag and set it on the old wooden table inside the boathouse. The screen glowed blue in the darkness as he opened several windows filled with numbers and documents. “I spent the last two days decrypting the files you stole for Elena,” he explained. “At first I thought it was just more evidence of my father’s dirty deals. Shell companies. Money laundering. The usual. But then I found these.” He clicked on a folder and turned the screen toward me. Rows of bank statements appeared. Offshore accounts in Switzerland. Zurich. The name on every single one made my stomach drop. Sophia Hale. Damien’s mother. The woman everyone said had died years ago in a mysterious car accident. “These trusts are still active,” Damien said. His voice cracked slightly. “Look at the dates. Transactions as recent as last month. Someone has been withdrawing money. Large amounts. Paying for properties, medical bills, even private security in Zurich.” I leaned in closer, my eyes scanning the numbers. “But she is dead. Everyone knows that. Victor told me the story himself. The accident. The funeral.” Damien shook his head slowly. “That is what he wanted everyone to believe. I was only twelve when it happened. They showed me the coffin. They made me watch them lower it into the ground. But these records… they suggest she might still be alive.” I covered my mouth with my hand. The implication hit me like a wave. If Damien’s mother was alive, hidden away somewhere in Switzerland, then everything about this family was built on even deeper lies than I imagined. Victor had not just been cruel to his son. He might have faked his wife’s death. “Why would he do that?” I whispered. Damien stared at the screen, his face tight with anger and something like hope. “Control. Power. My mother knew too many of his secrets. She tried to leave him once. I remember the fights. The screaming. If she is alive, it means he locked her away or paid her to disappear. And someone is still funding her life. Look at this.” He opened another file. Regular payments. A luxury apartment in Zurich. Private doctors. Even a small art gallery registered under a different name but connected to the same trust. The spending was consistent. Someone was keeping her comfortable. Alive. “I thought she abandoned me,” Damien said quietly. His voice broke in a way that made my chest ache. “All these years I hated her for leaving. For choosing to die rather than stay with me. But what if she never left? What if he took her from me?” I reached out and touched his arm gently. He did not pull away. For the first time since the gala, he looked at me with something other than pure pain. There was confusion there now. Desperation. “Clara, I do not know what to do with this,” he continued. “If she is alive, I need to find her. But if Victor discovers I have this information, he will destroy everything. Including you.” I swallowed hard. “Elena wanted this drive for a reason. She must have suspected something. Maybe she is using it against him too.” Damien nodded. “That is why I needed to see you. You are in the middle of all this. Carrying a child that could belong to either of us. Standing on that stage the other night, letting them believe it was his. I thought I had lost you completely.” Tears filled my eyes. “You have not lost me. Victor forced that moment. I never told him about the baby. He still does not know. I am still hiding everything. From him. From the world.” He looked at me for a long moment, searching my face. Then he pulled me into a tight hug. I let myself melt against him, breathing in his familiar scent. For a few seconds the dangerous world outside disappeared. It was just us in this old boathouse, clinging to each other like two broken people trying to survive the same storm. “I am sorry I doubted you,” he whispered against my hair. “Seeing you with his hand on your stomach… it broke something in me.” “I know,” I said softly. “But I am still here. Still fighting. We both are.” We pulled apart slowly. Damien turned back to the laptop and showed me more files. Emails between Victor and private investigators in Switzerland. Records of payments to keep someone silent. A medical report from three years ago mentioning a woman with the same rare blood type as Damien’s mother. “This changes everything,” he said. “If she is alive, I can bring her back. I can use this to destroy him completely. No more games. No more waiting.” I felt a chill run down my spine. “But what if she does not want to be found? What if she is hiding for a reason? And what about the baby? If Victor finds out any of this…” Damien closed the laptop and took my hands in his. “I will protect you. Both of you. No matter whose child it is. You are not alone in this anymore.” We talked for almost an hour in hushed voices. He told me about the pain of growing up believing his mother had chosen to leave him. I told him about the constant fear of Victor discovering my pregnancy. We shared the weight of all the secrets we were carrying. For the first time, it felt like we were truly partners in this dangerous fight. Before I left, Damien kissed me softly. Not with the usual hunger, but with something deeper. Care. Fear. Hope. “Be careful going back,” he said. “I will contact you when I have a plan. We move soon.” I nodded and slipped out of the boathouse, making my way back through the dark gardens. The mansion loomed ahead like a sleeping monster. I crept inside and returned to the master bedroom just as the first light of dawn touched the windows. Victor was still asleep. I changed quickly and climbed back into bed, my mind racing with everything I had learned. Damien’s mother might be alive. The offshore trusts were still moving money. Someone in Zurich was living under her name. I placed my hand on my stomach and closed my eyes. This baby had brought so much chaos already. Now it felt like the key to unlocking a much bigger truth about the Hale family. A truth that could either free us all or destroy us completely. Sleep finally came, but it was filled with dreams of a woman I had never met, watching me from the shadows of a Swiss apartment, waiting to be found. When I woke up later that morning, Victor was already gone for the day. I stared at the ceiling, wondering how much longer I could keep all these pieces from falling apart. The forensic audit had revealed more than just financial records. It had uncovered a ghost from the past. And that ghost was about to change everything.
