The blood oath

The spotlight felt like judgment from above, ready to expose every secret I was carrying inside me. I stood backstage at the Langford Grand Hotel ballroom, my hands trembling so badly that I had to clasp them together to hide it. The annual corporate gala was one of the biggest events of the year. Hundreds of wealthy investors, board members, and influential business partners filled the elegant space. Crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling. Live music played softly in the background. Waiters moved through the crowd with trays of expensive champagne. Everything looked perfect on the surface. But inside, I was falling apart. Victor stood beside me, tall and commanding in his tailored black tuxedo. He had been quiet during the ride here, but I could feel the tension rolling off him. The company stock had been dropping steadily for two weeks. Investors were nervous about recent rumors of internal problems. Tonight, Victor needed to project strength and stability. And he had decided I would be the key to that message. “Ava,” he said, turning to face me. His voice was low but firm. “When I introduce you on stage, I want you to speak from the heart. Tell them we are building a lasting legacy. Make them believe the future of Langford Enterprises is secure. Do not hold back.” I looked up at him, my throat dry. “Victor, I do not think this is the right time. I am not prepared for this kind of speech.” His eyes narrowed slightly. He placed a hand on my shoulder, the weight of it heavy and possessive. “You do not need to prepare. You are my wife. This is your role. The shareholders need to see a united front. A family that is growing stronger. Hint at our future together. That is all I ask.” I wanted to tell him the truth right there. That I was already pregnant. That the future he wanted to parade was already happening in secret. But the words stayed trapped inside me. Victor still had no idea. The pregnancy remained a dangerous secret shared only with Damien and Elena. Telling him now would create chaos I was not ready to face. Before I could say anything more, the host called our names. Victor took my arm and led me onto the brightly lit stage. The applause was immediate and loud. Lights flashed from cameras positioned all around the room. I felt exposed, like every person in the audience could see through my carefully applied makeup and elegant emerald gown to the fear underneath. Victor spoke first. His voice carried through the microphone with natural authority as he talked about recent achievements and upcoming projects. He painted a picture of a company moving forward with confidence. Then he turned toward me with a proud smile that did not reach his eyes. “And now, my beautiful wife Ava would like to share some personal news about our future,” he said smoothly. My heart slammed against my ribs. I stepped forward to the microphone, feeling the heat of the lights on my face. Hundreds of eyes watched me expectantly. I scanned the crowd quickly, searching. And then I found him. Damien stood near the back, partially hidden behind a tall column. He wore a dark suit, looking every bit like he belonged among these powerful people. But his face told a different story. His eyes were already locked on me, intense and questioning. I gripped the edge of the podium. “Thank you all for coming tonight,” I began, my voice softer than I wanted but steady enough. “Being married to Victor has shown me what true dedication looks like. Langford Enterprises is more than a company. It is a family. And we are committed to building something that will last for generations to come.” I paused. My hand instinctively moved toward my stomach before I caught myself and lowered it. The room was completely silent now, hanging on my words. Victor stood beside me, nodding approvingly. “We look forward to the next chapter with hope and excitement,” I continued. “A chapter filled with new beginnings and lasting stability. Thank you for believing in us.” I did not say the word pregnant. I did not announce it directly. But the way Victor smiled and placed his hand gently on my lower stomach for the cameras made the message crystal clear. Gasps and murmurs spread through the crowd, followed by loud applause. People stood up in some sections. Flashes went off like fireworks. Victor leaned close to me while waving to the audience. “Well done,” he whispered. “That should fix the stock by morning.” I kept smiling even as my chest felt like it was being crushed. I had not told Victor the truth. I had not confirmed anything. Yet in that moment, I had let the entire room believe I was carrying his heir. The secret was no longer fully mine. It had been twisted into a public performance to save his company. As we stepped off the stage, congratulations poured in from every direction. Board members shook Victor’s hand vigorously. Women touched my arm and offered warm wishes. A few even reached out to touch my stomach gently. I accepted everything with polite nods and quiet thank yous, but inside I was screaming. My eyes kept searching for Damien. When I finally spotted him again, the pain in his expression nearly broke me. He stood frozen near the exit, staring at me with raw heartbreak. His face was pale. His hands were clenched at his sides. He had heard every word. He had seen Victor’s hand on my stomach. In his mind, I had just publicly claimed this pregnancy as part of my life with Victor. He believed I had chosen this golden cage. That I had chosen his father over him. That I was truly lost to him forever. I took one small step in his direction, but Victor’s arm tightened around my waist. “Stay with me,” he said under his breath. “There are important people we still need to speak with.” Damien held my gaze for one long, painful second. Then he shook his head slowly, turned around, and walked out through the side doors without looking back. The sight of his retreating figure felt like a knife twisting in my heart. I had lost him. In that single moment on stage, I had probably lost him forever. The rest of the night became a long blur of forced conversations and fake laughter. I moved through the crowd like a ghost, smiling when required and staying close to Victor’s side. Elena caught my eye from across the room and gave me a small, knowing nod. She was pleased. Her leverage over me had just grown stronger. When we finally climbed into the car hours later, Victor was in a visibly better mood. “Tonight was a success, Ava. The announcement will calm the investors. By tomorrow the stock should begin to recover. You played your part perfectly.” I stared out the window at the passing city lights. “I did not actually say I was pregnant,” I said quietly. Victor chuckled softly. “You did not need to. The implication was enough. People see what they want to see. And right now they see a strong family ready for the future.” Back at the mansion, I went straight to the master bedroom and locked the door behind me. The elegant gown suddenly felt too heavy. I took it off and stood in front of the mirror in my slip. My stomach still looked mostly flat, but I knew the truth growing inside me. I placed both hands over it and closed my eyes. Tears slipped down my cheeks. Damien’s heartbroken face kept flashing in my mind. He thought I had betrayed him. He thought this baby belonged to Victor and this life. He had no idea I was still hiding everything. That I was still trapped and terrified. I sank onto the edge of the bed and cried quietly. The weight of all the secrets felt crushing. Elena had the flash drive and my pregnancy test. Victor was using me to fix his company image. And Damien… the one person who had made me feel alive was now walking away, believing I had chosen his enemy. “I am so sorry,” I whispered into the empty room, my hand still resting on my stomach. “I never wanted any of this.” Sleep came much later, restless and filled with dreams of Damien turning his back on me again and again. When I woke in the early hours, my pillow was wet with tears and my heart felt heavier than ever. The blood oath had been sealed tonight. Not with spoken words, but with silence, implications, and public performance. My body and my secret were now tools in Victor’s game. And I had no clear way out.
