I thought the pregnancy test was the worst thing I would have to hide. I was wrong.
Elena found something far more dangerous.
I was in the upstairs bathroom trying to hide another wave of nausea when my phone buzzed with an unknown number. The message was short and cold. Meet me at the old greenhouse in twenty minutes. Come alone. We need to talk about what you threw away this morning.
My heart nearly stopped. I deleted the message immediately and stared at my pale face in the mirror. Elena. Victor’s ambitious daughter. She had been watching me too closely since she arrived. I knew she wanted power in the family business, but I never thought she would dig into my trash.
I changed into a simple sweater and slipped out through the side door. The greenhouse was far from the main house, hidden behind tall trees. Elena was already there when I arrived, leaning against an old wooden table with her arms crossed. She looked calm and perfectly put together in her designer clothes.
“You came,” she said with a small smile. “Good girl.”
“What do you want, Elena?” I asked, keeping my voice steady even though my legs felt weak.
She reached into her bag and pulled out a small plastic bag. Inside were the remains of the pregnancy test I thought I had destroyed properly. Two pink lines still visible even through the plastic.
“You have been careful, Ava,” she said softly. “But not careful enough. Medical waste. Used tests. Even the nausea medicine packets you tried to hide in the garden bin. I have been tracking everything for the past week.”
I felt the blood drain from my face. “How did you…”
“I have my ways. Servants talk when you pay them well. And I pay very well.” She put the bag back in her purse. “Does my father know he is going to be a father again? Or should I say, does he know the child might not be his?”
My stomach twisted. I wanted to deny everything but the evidence was right there in her hands. “Please, Elena. Do not do this.”
She stepped closer. Her eyes were sharp. “I am not going to tell him. Not yet. I need something from you first.”
I wrapped my arms around myself. “What do you want?”
“There is a high stakes dinner tonight. Important people. Business partners who are starting to question my father’s leadership. During that dinner, I need you to go into his home office and open the safe. The code is 1987. Inside you will find a small encrypted flash drive. Black with a silver stripe. Bring it to me before midnight.”
I shook my head quickly. “I cannot do that. Victor keeps that office locked when he is not there. And even if I get in, the safe…”
“You can,” she cut in smoothly. “You are the wife. You have access to almost every room now. During dinner, excuse yourself to freshen up. The cameras in the hallway will be looped for exactly twelve minutes. I have already arranged that. Get the drive and come back to the table like nothing happened.”
My hands started shaking. “Why me? Why not do it yourself?”
Elena smiled but there was no warmth in it. “Because if you get caught, it looks like a desperate wife trying to find money or jewelry. If I get caught, it looks like a daughter plotting against her father. And we both know what happens to people who cross Victor Hale.”
I took a step back. “This is blackmail.”
“Call it motivation,” she replied. “You give me the drive, I keep your little secret. The pregnancy stays between us. I might even help you hide it longer. But if you refuse… I will make sure my father finds out everything. The test. The medicine. And I will make him question the timing. You know how he is about bloodlines.”
Tears burned in my eyes. “You would really do that to me?”
“I would do worse,” she said quietly. “This family runs on secrets and power. I am simply playing the game better than you.”
I thought about Damien and his plans. The coup he was speeding up. If Elena got that flash drive, it could destroy everything or maybe help him. I did not know anymore. Everything felt tangled.
“What is on the drive?” I asked.
Elena tilted her head. “Information that could shift control of the company. That is all you need to know. Get it for me and your secret stays safe. Fail, and I will make sure Victor knows exactly what kind of woman he married.”
I stood there for a long moment, my mind racing. I had no good choices. Refusing meant losing everything. Agreeing meant betraying Victor in his own house while he sat at the dinner table with powerful guests.
“Fine,” I whispered. “I will do it.”
Elena’s smile returned. “Smart decision. The dinner starts at eight. Be ready. And Ava… do not try anything clever. I will know.”
She turned and walked away through the greenhouse, leaving me standing among the dead plants and broken glass. I stayed there for several minutes trying to calm my breathing. My hand moved to my stomach without thinking. This baby was supposed to be my secret. Now it had become a weapon in someone else’s hands.
The rest of the afternoon passed in a blur. I avoided everyone. Maria asked if I was feeling okay and I lied again. Victor came home early to prepare for the dinner. He looked at me with his usual cold approval.
“You will sit beside me tonight,” he said while adjusting his cufflinks. “Look elegant. These people need to see a stable family.”
“Yes,” I answered quietly.
He kissed my forehead like always. Mechanical. Expected. I felt sick again but held it down.
At exactly eight o’clock the guests started arriving. Expensive cars filled the driveway. I wore a long black dress that hid my still-flat stomach. Damien was not there, of course. He stayed away from these events. But Elena was smiling and playing the perfect daughter.
Dinner began in the grand dining hall. Conversation flowed around business deals and future investments. Victor sat at the head of the table like a king. I smiled when I was supposed to and stayed quiet.
Around nine, I leaned toward Victor. “I need to freshen up. I will be back soon.”
He nodded without looking at me. “Do not take long.”
I walked upstairs with my heart hammering. The hallway to the office was empty. I used the code Elena had given me on the side door. It opened with a soft click. Inside, Victor’s office smelled of leather and old books. I moved quickly to the large safe behind the painting.
My fingers trembled as I entered 1987. The safe clicked open.
There it was. The black flash drive with the silver stripe, sitting in a small compartment. I grabbed it and slipped it into the hidden pocket inside my dress. My hands were sweating so badly I almost dropped it.
I closed the safe, fixed the painting, and slipped back out. The twelve minutes were almost up. I hurried down the hallway and entered the bathroom to compose myself. My face in the mirror looked terrified. I pinched my cheeks again and took deep breaths.
When I returned to the table, Elena met my eyes across the flowers and wine glasses. I gave her the smallest nod. She smiled and raised her glass slightly.
The rest of the dinner felt endless. Victor talked about expansion plans. Guests laughed at his jokes. I sat there with the stolen drive burning against my skin like fire.
Later that night, after the last guest left, I found Elena waiting in the corridor near my bedroom.
“Did you get it?” she whispered.
I took the drive from my pocket and handed it to her. My fingers felt numb.
She examined it quickly and slipped it into her bag. “Good. Our secret stays safe for now. Keep hiding that pregnancy, Ava. I will be watching.”
She walked away without another word.
I went into the master bedroom and closed the door. Victor was still downstairs. I sank onto the bed and buried my face in my hands. Tears came fast and silent.
I had just stolen from my husband. I had let Elena use my baby as leverage. And I still did not know who the father really was or what would happen when everything finally exploded.
All I knew was that the walls were closing in faster than I could run.
