36Hans saw Esther among the passengers coming out of the terminal and went to meet her. Before taking the suitcase from her, he held her tightly to him for a long time. He hadn’t told her what she was going to face that evening and he felt bad at the thought that he was the architect of it. In those last few days he had done nothing but wonder if he was doing the right thing and if there was an alternative, but each time he always came to the same conclusion: they had to confront each other.
