Chapter 1 ~ Kylie
Kylie was very cautious around men, ever since she was young. She didn’t know why, but she had trouble trusting them. So she was surprised that when she saw him, she felt such intense attraction towards him. A rugged, handsome man walked into the cafe, quite dirty- he was probably a hard working man, she thought. He had dark brown hair, with the bluest eyes she’d ever seen. “Can I get a black coffee and a raspberry danish?” He asked, in his deep, gruff voice. Kylie just nodded, too enamored with him that she couldn’t speak. “What is wrong with me?” I muttered to myself, then quickly looked back, to make sure no one heard me. I couldn’t remember the last time that a man made me feel this way. “Were you staying or going?” Kylie managed to ask the tall, rugged man. “Going” he said with a smile, “too much work to do” he added. “What do you do for work?” Kylie surprised herself by asking. “Farm work” he replied. “What type of farm work? Do you have farm animals?” I asked, a little too excitedly. Kylie loved all types of animals. “Calm down” she thought to herself, “he might think you’re being too nosy” Kylie was notorious for being nosy - or just curious, as she always said when someone told her that. The man smiled again - “he doesn’t seem to mind the questions” I thought and smiled back. “I do have animals,” he said, “but my actual work is mostly in the fields.” “Fun,” Kylie said. Sam - Kylie’s coworker, brought the coffee and his danish. Kylie couldn’t help but feel down, she didn’t want him to leave. “Well,” she said, “I hope you get to enjoy your coffee and danish before you have to go back to your hard work….” Kylie paused and held out her hand, pointing at him, hoping he’d tell her his name. “Brayden,” he said, holding his hand to his chest. I pointed to my name tag, “I’m kylie, nice to meet you.” Kylie felt shy all of a sudden. “Thanks,” Brayden said with a smile, “for the coffee and danish,” he quickly added. “Have a good day” Brayden said with a wave, and then he left.
Kylie headed to the back of the cafe, where she knew Sam would be for her break. “That man sure had all your attention” Sam said with a chuckle. “There was something about him,” I said, “he was so attractive!” Sam nodded in agreement. “That he was, so did you get his number?” “No, you know me, I don’t know how to talk to guys; I’m just so awkward around them,”. I sat down at the table with Sam, putting my head in my hands. “You’re not awkward!” Sam almost yelled, she hated when I said certain things about myself. “I think what you need is a night out!” Sam said. “You should come to my cousin's wedding with me tomorrow! I’m only going to the reception, because of work.” Kylie couldn’t remember the last wedding she went too, having drank far too much at it. “Well…. The last wedding I went to didn’t go so well” I told her. “I know,” Sam sighed. “You’re different now though, you don’t drink like you used to. It could be fun, there’s going to be a dance!” Sam gave me her best impression of puppy dog eyes. “Ok, I’ll come with you.” I finally said. “Let’s get back to work though.”

After work, I rushed home to see if I had something I could wear to the wedding. I didn’t have much for dressy clothes, considering I didn’t go out much. As soon as I walked in the door to my apartment, Cleo - my cat - meowed at me, while rubbing up on my leg. “Yes, missy, I’ll feed you”. After I got her fed, I checked my closet. I found a purple, shimmery top and a black flowing skirt that went just past my knees. I tried them on, “oh good,” I thought, “they still fit!”
