Heartache

The same night, Glen went to a restaurant to meet his adversary, Martin May, he drives towards the innermost part of the city, even though he leaves far away from his present location. The cars load in a long line, on every side of the road. People coming from their jobs, either walk on the side of the street or intertwines in groups at the bus stations. Glen didn’t mind the madness, of desperation in people to go home. After a long day, a person wants nothing, but to lie in his bed and rest. Glen also desires to lie on his couch with a glass of beer in his hand. However, his helpers, all the people, even his telephone and devices which rings non-stop, irritate him as he thinks he can’t escape his exasperating life, therefore at once, he breaks the rule and stays away from it. His car is stuck in the middle of the road because there’s no way out in there. Cars fill in his every side and in fifteen minutes it moves only a few inches. At these moments, anger usually builds up in his chest, releasing the monster inside him, but Glen can sense nothing. Is it because he’s tired, or…? He no longer wanted his thoughts to continue. The road then becomes lighter and now his car moves in a smooth flow. It takes him almost an hour to come across at one of the little bars in the city. Glen parks his car outside and, walks step by step inside. Unlike at the restaurant, no one greeted him at the door, aside from ambient music, the whole place shakes with a roar of upbeat pop disco music. There weren’t many people in the bar. Five of them are scattered in different normal seats boozed up. Two dance with the music, and another two sits at the counter. Glen sits three chairs away from the two people at the same counter. He stays farther as he could from these people, not because he got his nerves shaken when he talks with people, it is his dignity who stops him. Deep inside his head, he perceives he should not associate with these mad drunk, beer drinkers, who have no important thing to do in their lives but be in the bar. It is quite ridiculous how he thinks, even though he’s in the bar also with the people he so-called drunkards, but Glen makes an excuse for himself. He says in his mind he wanted to feel the way these people think and does being intoxicated with alcohol can bring warmth to your whole body, and therefore made you forget every problem. He laughs at himself inside his head, Glen acts like a real macho man in front of the crowd, but his way of life, and busyness, never got him the chance to get drunk. Glen calls the bartender and asks about the most expensive whiskey they have. The waiter throws some brand names, flavors, and specials but all Glen could understand are mumbles, thus he let the bartender decide for him instead since he got enough headache to make another decision. In a couple of minutes, the bartender serves the glass of whiskey in front of him. The balanced sweetness and bitterness intrigue his taste buds the moment Glen takes a sip, but afterward, he gallops the entire glass in one drink. “Another one!”, he ordered the bartender who stares at him, after he drink it in one shot, and then he said, “Sir, one shot of these is worth a hundred dollars”. Glen stares back, he hasn’t sense, the lowering of inhibitions, the slurred speech, and his thoughts still haunt his mind, thus he wanted more. He placed a bill worth a thousand dollars, on the desk. If he got drunk, Glen couldn’t pay the bartender anymore, and he doesn’t want to call the police, so he paid upfront. The bartender’s eyes dazzled on the money in front of him, but what thrills him more, is Glen’s instructions. “Serve me, how many shots it would cost and the rest of the money is yours”. The bartender then keeps his eye on him, for the chance to get another tip. He passes the glass to Glen and smiles, “Problem?”, he asked. Glen sneers at him before he takes a sip of the whiskey, “Have you ever been, in love before?”, he told the bartender. “Of course! Who hasn’t?”, the bartender chuckles. He wipes the glasses and listens after Glen. “But have you ever loved a woman so much you never forgot about her?”, Glen asks, “I do”, the bartender smirks, “I am so in love with a woman, who never loved me back, and the worst part is my feelings for her lasted for ten years”, he added. “Same”, Glen uttered, before he cleared his entire glass, and drank all of it. “You know what”, he said and pulls another bill in his pocket, “I am buying the entire bottle and keep the change”. The bartender couldn’t believe how rich the man was in front of him, therefore he asked him if he was sure about it, and Glen nodded, but requested not to give him the entire bottle but pour it into his glass, therefore the bartender pours another round of whiskey. He looks at Glen with his face a little bewildered “You seem troubled, What happened?”, he asked. “The woman, I used to be with is now happily married and with kids to my adversary”, Glen laughs, “What a joke!”, he uttered. This time, the bartender already got enough money from his customer Glen, therefore his intentions to talk with him now is out of interest, and to help a troubled fellow. “It must have been hard”, he said, then placed the glass and the towel on the counter. “You know what happened to my story?”, the bartender asked him, but Glen looked at him and didn’t utter a single word, thus he continued. “If I pushed myself towards the woman I used to love, I would have not met my wife, and now, I never regret the decision of letting the woman go. You seem to be a rich person and probably successful, your world doesn’t revolve only for love”, the bartender then lies his elbow at the top of the counter and leans forward to Glen, “Open your eyes and you’ll see what I am talking about”, Glen froze and looked at the guy he didn’t utter a word. He didn’t anticipate such wise words from a bartender. His words fascinate him, yet he believes half of a chance, its magic works. If it did work, he should have forgotten about his ex-girlfriend Lauren. He tried seeking a woman who can stun his heart and capture it. The one who has a dazzling beauty in her heart, but also has a will to stay on his side. Is he a perfectionist when it comes to women? If not why can’t he find one? Probably he’s too busy with the company this task slipped out of his mind. He wanted to ask his perception of the bartender and why does this happen to him. However, the bartender now entertains a new guest, therefore he swallows his question and kept his mouth shut. Glen leans his head on the counter, his eyes become heavy with this head and his sight blurs a little, but then a realization strikes him. Only because Lauren and Martin are happy with their marriage he should drown himself in deep sadness. He even made promises, let the love arrive in his life, and the magic of destiny do the work. Glen chuckles, he found himself funny, and an absolute joke. His promises made him miserable, because of his disinterest in love for all these years, Lauren manage to live at the apex of his heart. How can he blame himself, for all the women he met, she’s the most perfect of them all. Beautiful, kind, passionate, and countless good traits, except for one thing. Although their relationship lasted for five years, starting the day they met at an auction in one of the most famous museums in the country by a portrait of an abstract painting of nature in autumn, with a man and a woman, bound at the middle. The painting captures Glen’s eyes, but what captivates him is his competitor at the bidding. Back then, Lauren works as a doctor in a well-known hospital in the country, which his father owns, thus she becomes an heir to a multi-million dollar business. Glen still couldn’t erase into his mind the dress she wore on the day they met. A silver evening dress filled with glitters highlights the curves in her waist and the slenderness of her body. When she sits at the opposite side of the rows of chairs, Glen can’t help himself but glance. When the auction comes to an end, they save the best for last though presenting a painting, worth thirty million dollars starting price. The auction begins and they asked the crowd, Lauren raises her bid board and offers to buy it. However, Glen also raises his board and proposes to buy it, with the price of thirty-five million. He looks at Lauren and he noticed her eyes were also on his but no reaction. She then offers forty million dollars, but Glen still bids higher than hers. After they reached the price of fifty million dollars, Lauren drops her banner and lets Glen have the piece of art. After the event, Glen chases her when she disappears out of nowhere. However, luck comes next to him, and he catches up with Lauren right before she enters her car. They exchanged a few words and then compromised to go on a date. They dated five times before the couple agreed to be exclusive in their relationship, which lasted for years until an incident happened. The destruction of the call-center site Glen’s company built, which not only almost ruin his business but ended their relationship as well. Lauren is a pawn of his father and a bargaining chip to exchange with people he knew he could use to advance towards his ambitions, of one day the name of his hospital company will rise at the top of the country. The moment her daughter dated Glen, his investment in the hospital company becomes a great help in the renovation of some facilities in their different hospitals, but he also uses this way to get closer to one of Glen’s workers, Martin May. At first, Lauren’s father didn’t even notice the existence of Martin, and after he knew Martin’s several attempts to enter politics, he failed, therefore in his eyes Martin is weak and useless, but after the incident, their world was turned upside down. With the risk of Glen’s company drowning in bankruptcy and Martin’s brother rising at the senatorial seat. His eyes shifted towards Martin. He forced his daughter to date Martin at Glen’s back, but instead of resisting Lauren grew fond of Martin, even there’s a huge gap between their ages. This event, which happened to Glen devastates him which results to seal his heart for love. Lauren darkens his eyes towards love, through her he sees love, the people’s way to find meaning in their senseless life. They placed their attention on how to break free from their frustrations or is he doing it also, but in just a different way. Back at the bar, people start to come in, when the night gets deeper. Glen raises his hand a little and found his head in throbbing pain. He can’t even look at the bartender in a straight view, but still, he asks him for another glass. The bartender didn’t allow it this time, because Glen might end up causing troubles in the bar, like other drunk customers, besides in this situation, he’ll find it hard to go home, therefore he hindered his attempts to get more drinks, he even calls a taxi for him, since he can perceive Glen can’t drive at his state. The bartender doesn’t want to be liable for him.
