The City Mayor

Eight years ago, At the bustles of the city center, lies a tower of a new call center building. The opened white lights from every floor, join the bright gleams of different light colors in the city. On the entrance gathers tens of people, some of the media, while others are businessmen, politicians, and some just simple citizens. The camera flashes a beam on the entrance door. At the front is Glen Hopkins, and eight of the other company’s staff, not including his brother, Adrian, is also there and stands beside the owner.

The CEO and founder of the new call center, building, shouts an empowering speech below the podium, where masses, look upon him. He shouted the echoes of his sensuous promises, on people’s hearts, but like any other politician, people wanted to hear the sweet words, yet they grew exhausted on years of empty promises, therefore his words flows in their ears and chest, yet thrown away afterwards, still, they applauded, on him. When the speech ended, the owner, Glen, his brother Adrian, and the other company staff moves to the side of the open entrance door where a red ribbon, obstructs the path towards the inside. One of the company’s young staff, handed to his owner a shiny and sharp scissors and with it, the owner cuts the ribbon, and the crowd applauded once more.

The opening night of a new call center company, in the city brings a glimpse of hope in the minds of the citizens. The prospect of being a part of the company, and earning a high salary, can solve their financial problem. Half of the current number of workers the company still seeks to fill in, thus a lot of people came to apply during the opening, since they might find a piece of information to be able work in there. Sadly, their efforts were in vain, because the opening night, allows only rich people to go inside the party.

After the event, the company’s net worth grows rapidly in just a few months. However, tragedy lurks in the most unexpected moment and crashes the dreams of the people who work in the company, but the one who was struck the most is the owner.

A 6.1 earthquake devastates almost the whole city, collapsing everything on its way, including the new call center building. Two of the companies workers died during the incident, and the city wept for days, not for the deaths but for their own company's losses. Their establishments also crumbled, which they use to grasp financial freedom, and the hardest part of it is they can blame no one, not even vent their anger with.

Glen’s company descends into crisis amid the aftermath of the earthquake. They built the building, earthquake-resistant but it disintegrated into pieces. Their company's invincible reputation was shaken by the earthquake. At their main office, Glen walks in spirals in his room. He yells, at the point of the burst of anger in his veins, to the caller on his phone. Glen shouts, again and again, and calls for an urgent meeting with the officials of the company.

His subordinates knew him at the back of their heads, therefore they didn’t waste a single second, and went to the conference room, where their CEO awaits, in the front seat. After half an hour all of the Verselion construction company’s head employees are in the same room.

Their debate rages for hours, with a hope to find a solution to the mess they’ve gone into. Three of the highest staff demands investigation, to find out why their plan didn’t work, but Glen refused, he told them it wasn’t necessary because what the company needs is an immediate

action, to resolve the crisis. His answer infuriates the three of them, therefore, a debate heats up, and the people start to raise their voices Their dignity is the only factor which prevents them from attacking each other.

Glen never wanted the culprit to run free in their company floors, but he didn’t intend to alarm the suspect, about an investigation, thus, he will do the investigation in private.

“Why are you all making the situation worse? we haven’t even heard a word from the owner”, one of them stands up and uttered.

“Are you insane! This event can ruin the companies reputation, we built tens of earthquake-resistant infrastructure, what will all those ten think after they hear this!”, another person shouted, then all the other people starts to mumble.

Glen raises his hand, in an attempt to capture their attention, however, the people inside can’t draw their differences, therefore Glen slams his hand on the table. They all look at him, one after another until the room fell in deaf silence.

“Are you all finished?”, he stares into their eyes. “I asked you here for a solution, not another problem, why do you all think I hired you!”, his voice then thunders across the room.

“But, sir….”, one of them was about to utter a word, but Glen raises his hands once more, and stops him, “All of you dismissed”, he closes his eyes for a few seconds.

The people disperse and went their way outside the room, but apart from Glen, two people, are still on their sit. “Why did you let them go?”, Adrian asked his brother.

“I would get nothing from them, other than headache”, Glen told him. The other man present sits on his left side. He is Oscar Stevens the senior manager in the company for almost five years. Glen relies on him, through consultancy on some of the decisions he must take, and they became friends. Oscar then asks, “Any plans, to catch the traitor?”,

“I hope a private investigator would be enough”, Glen said, and he agreed.

The three of them discuss the dilemma they must resolve. Although it added another hour, it runs in a smooth flow, unlike the hours earlier which they just wasted by listening to the other officers with baseless vent of anger. Glen assures himself it won’t happen again, since he will fire most of his futile workers.

A day passes, the call center company owner, visited Glen in his office outside the city and, they talked for a while. It’s a little rough to find a middle ground between them, since Glen and the owner were both hot-headed, and doesn’t hand over their flags to one another, yet for the sake of their own companies, they strived to bend over. They concluded the best solution is Verselion will pay the call center company a hefty amount of money. Glen offered them a free reconstruction, but the owner refused and insisted on the money alone. His statement shakes Glen’s nerves, but the hardest part, of it, is he can’t release it in front of him, thus he agreed, and perished in silence.

Months passed, and the aftermath effects of the incident, heightens up their sales fall, and the number of clients declined. The company never hit such a low point after Glen took over his father’s company. However, the difference between the time he and his father became the CEO, was that his father is an incompetent drunkard, but Glen, on the other hand, let himself keep a snake around him.

After a few weeks of investigation, he found out his forty-two-year-old project manager

Martin May, cut out some expenses, pocketed it for himself and bought low-quality materials for the frames and shear walls instead of the high-grade priced material the company uses.

Glen boiled in anger, upon the moment he found out, therefore he sues him, found the best prosecutor, he needed, used his connections on other powerful people so they can put the prosecutor he knew in charge, to put the man in jail. However, when the two met in court the judge’s and jury’s decision caught Glen unaware after they favored Martin, but what startles him the most, is that the strength of their shreds of evidence can match Glen’s. “The evidence was all fake, they must have prepared for this” Glen whispered in his mind. The event intrigues Glen more and more, about Martin. Martin creates a brilliant plan, avoiding the charges against him, but he made his crimes be shown in the light. Someone is behind this.

Although the trial is finished. Glen still gave a task to his private investigator. Find out who is Martin’s savior. He let the private investigator solve this intrigue, because he preoccupies himself, with a more major dilemma, his company. Glen and some of his new staff, comes up with a risky and with a not much bright plan, yet they must try it for the sake of the company.

Verselion offers a refund and insurance to every client, and additional money for compensation if a disaster happens. They marketed the plan at once, but the results didn’t come at the pace which they intended. The inclination of sales rises bit by bit, but eventually, after a couple of years, they managed to regain their former eminence. The years followed, Glen’s net worth skyrocketed into billions, drawing a massive success on the company.

During the conduction of their careful plans, Glen determines the person behind Martin, who played the role to save him. It was his cousin, and one of the most powerful senators in the country. At that time, Glen could do nothing to put him on trial again.

Back in the present times, his brother Adrian enters his office. Adrian approached him and sits on the chair in front of his desk. “As expected, Martin won the election”, Adrian puts his phone on his desk, to show his brother a fresh news article. Glen peeked at it, then continues on his work with the papers, which made Adrian puzzled. Usually, his brother’s anger rages, and he starts to yell or throw items out, yet Glen doesn’t show a bit of interest, so he asked, “Aren’t you worried?”,

“Why would I?”, Glen told him, without even glancing at his brother. Adrian’s eyes widen in disbelief at his brother’s words. “Have you gone mad?, What if he revenges unto you?”,

“Isn’t it suppose to be me, who wants vengeance”, Glen said, and sets aside the papers in his hands, “Look, I don’t care about him any longer, but don’t he dare cross my path again, or I swear, I won’t let go of him anymore”, he uttered with his mouth trembling.

“But, don’t you want it anymore…….isn’t that the reason, you supported Halbert in the first place?”, Adrian said,

“It is, yet now he’s the new mayor so we must be more careful”, he said.

Adrian sighs, he doesn’t want his brother to regret his decision. Months ago Glen’s desire on taking down Martin fires up, but now, he seems to be scared, Is he? Adrian didn’t accept the idea, his brother can charge his enemies without a weapon, but his mind. Glen removes anyone who blocks his way towards his desires. Probably Glen didn’t really desire it anymore, but he, Adrian, wants revenge because the hatred is still nailed in his chest. Adrian left the thought and

told his brother he understands him, even if he doesn’t. Adrian then stands up, and left the room, after a short goodbye. Glen’s eyes are stuck on the door, yet his mind is in a different place.

He knows his brother looks upon him, in an unparalleled perfection, however, Adrian was right, deep inside Glen resides a fear, not for himself, but his brother and the company. If he cares for himself alone, Glen would get his vengeance from Martin, yet since Adrian is on his side, and the company on his palms, he must measure every move he takes, especially now that Martin is the mayor. He holds a certain power, which can eliminate Adrian if he wants to.

“Heavens forgive me, I won’t know what can I do if someone, ever touches my brother”, he uttered, therefore he increased the security on every property they own, and with Adrian. For him, it’s better if he will be targeted since he can handle it himself and make his enemies crumble on the ground. Glen has been unrivaled for a long time, and if Martin blocks his way, he assures he can defeat him, however, he can end up wounded or dragged along in the abyss with his enemy, therefore he must avoid conflict at any cost.
