Friday had finally arrived. Emme Lou had called that morning to remind Ward they had made tentative plans for Friday evening. Ward couldn’t imagine what he’d said to give her that impression. However, he sidestepped the issue by saying he was sorry, but he had other plans. Seemingly undiscouraged, Emme Lou had asked if it were anyone she knew. Ward didn’t know what to say.
