PROLOGUE: THE NIGHT THE WORLD BROKE
The neon lights of Poblacion bled through the windows of Sophie Reyes’s small office, painting the walls in streaks of pink and blue. It was 11:47 PM, and she’d been hunched over her laptop for twelve hours straight, finalizing the paperwork for Manggagawa Crafts—her life’s work, built to turn Filipino artisans’ handiwork into a sustainable business that would lift entire communities out of poverty. A stack of contracts sat on her desk, each one signed by a family from Palawan, Cebu, or Ilocos. Every signature was a promise she’d made and intended to keep: I will protect your craft. I will make sure you’re paid fairly. I will never let anyone take this from you. Her phone buzzed on the corner of the desk. A text from Marcus Santos—her boyfriend of three years: Almost there, baby. Brought your favorite halo-halo from that spot in Pasig you love so much. Save me a seat at your desk? A smile tugged at her lips. Marcus had been her anchor since the day she’d quit her corporate marketing job to chase this dream. When her parents had called her “foolish” for leaving a steady paycheck, when her former boss had laughed and said she’d “never survive in the real world,” Marcus had pulled her close and whispered, You’re going to change the world, Soph. I know it. The office door clicked open. She spun around, ready to throw her arms around him—but her smile froze the moment she saw who stood there. Marcus was in the doorway, but he wasn’t alone. Lia de la Cruz—her best friend since high school, the woman who’d been by her side through every heartbreak and victory—stood beside him, holding a bottle of champagne and a folder thick with white papers. Their smiles were sharp, like shards of broken glass. “Surprise,” Lia said, her voice too bright in the quiet room. “We’re celebrating.” “Celebrating what?” Sophie’s stomach twisted into a knot. She’d known something was off for weeks—shipments delayed without explanation, small sums missing from the business account, artisans calling to say contracts they’d never seen had been sent to rival firms. But she’d pushed the thoughts away, telling herself she was just stressed from working too hard. Marcus walked to her desk, sliding the folder across the polished wood. “The sale of Manggagawa Crafts,” he said, his voice flat. “Carlos Montenegro signed off on it an hour ago. We get twenty percent each—more than enough to start over somewhere better. Somewhere real.” Sophie stared at the papers. SOLD TO MONTENEGRO HOLDINGS was printed in bold black letters at the top. Her name was scrawled across the signature line—but it was forged. The loops of her ‘S’ were too tight, the tail of her ‘y’ too short. Only she would notice the difference. “I didn’t sign this,” she whispered, flipping through the pages with shaking hands. Emails spilled out from between the sheets—messages between Marcus and Lia, dating back six months. Lia to Marcus: She’s adding more weavers from Bohol next week. Easy to siphon from the new accounts before she notices. Marcus to Lia: Carlos says we can take over her apartment too—she’s so focused on the business, she won’t check the lease until it’s too late. Lia to Marcus: Poor Soph. She really thought we cared about her little “save the world” project. She’s so easy to manipulate. Tears burned her eyes. “Why?” she asked, looking from Marcus’s cold gaze to Lia’s fake smile. “I trusted you both. I thought we were building something together.” Marcus laughed—a sharp, cold sound that made her flinch. “Trust is for people who can afford to be weak. You were too busy handing out money to farmers to see what really matters—power. Carlos is going to turn your little crafts shop into a gold mine, and we’re getting a piece of the action. That’s how the world works.” He tossed a stack of white envelopes on the desk. Eviction notices. “You have forty-eight hours to get out of your apartment and your office. Carlos doesn’t want anything left of your business—he’s going to rebrand it completely.” Lia stepped forward, running a manicured nail over one of the artisan contracts. “Those people you’re so worried about? Carlos is already offering them half what you paid. Most of them signed this morning. They don’t care about you—they care about putting food on the table.” Sophie stood up, her hands balled into fists. “You’re lying. They’d never—” “The door’s that way,” Marcus cut her off, nodding toward the exit. “Don’t make us call security. It’ll be easier for everyone if you just leave quietly.” As she stumbled out into the night, the neon lights blurring through her tears, she heard Lia call after her: “Oh, and Soph? Next time you want to save the world, make sure you’re not surrounded by people who want to burn it down.” She walked for hours, her feet aching in her flats, until she found herself standing in front of Maya Dizon’s small apartment in Pasig. Maya—her other best friend, the one she’d met at a cooking class two years ago—opened the door before Sophie could even knock, as if she’d been waiting. “Maya, they—” Sophie’s words broke off as she collapsed into her friend’s arms, sobbing so hard her chest hurt. Maya held her tight, running a hand over her hair. Her voice was low and fierce. “I know. Kenji texted me what he found on the servers. Let’s get you inside. We’re not going to let them get away with this.” On the kitchen table, a wooden spoon lay next to a half-finished batch of ube brownies. Maya picked it up, turning it over in her hand. “I’ve always said—sometimes you need a little fire to make things right. And trust me, Soph… we’re about to start a blaze.”
