Chapter 57
JANEY’S SECOND SLEEPOVER at Montfair was planned better than the first. She arrived Friday afternoon, dressed in Claudette’s casual riding clothes and carrying her cubbing kit for the next day. To ease his own conscience, Thumper insisted on a short riding session in the ring and then a brief hack. At least that would allow him to honestly say his guest had ridden cross-country before. He didn’t have to mention that it had been for no more than half an hour.
Javier had both Bee and Lenny tacked up and waiting in the ring. Thumper was impressed that Janey already showed more confidence than she had the week before. He also wondered if her claim to have had so little riding experience was on the level.
After thirty minutes he said, “Okay. You look ready. Let’s hit the trail.”
