Evelyn Vance has spent years trying to save the last piece of her family's legacy—a small greenhouse her father left behind.

Then her reckless brother gambles away their future.

With crushing debts, a ruthless uncle stealing their family's assets, and foreclosure looming over the greenhouse, Evelyn is left with nowhere to turn.

Until Dante Moretti arrives.

A billionaire tycoon with a dangerous reputation, Dante offers her an impossible deal: marry him for one year, and he will erase her brother's debt, return the greenhouse to her, and help uncover the truth behind her father's downfall.

Evelyn hates him.

She doesn't trust him.

And she refuses to become another possession of the man her family once considered their greatest enemy.

But Dante isn't asking for her love.

He's asking for one year of her life.

Because there is a secret behind her father's destruction—and Dante may be the only man powerful enough to protect her from the people who betrayed her family.

As their contract marriage begins, Evelyn discovers that the most dangerous part of the deal isn't becoming Dante Moretti's wife.

It's falling for the man she swore she would never trust.

Chapter 1
The coffee cup shattered against the mahogany wall, sending dark, scalding liquid splattering across custom imported wallpaper. "Explain it to me again, Mr. Hayes," Julian Thorne’s voice was dangerously low, stripped of any human warmth. It was the tone that made Wall Street titans double over in cold sweat. "How does a three-million-dollar asset vanish into thin air overnight?" Across the sprawling, glass-walled office overlooking the glittering expanse of downtown Chicago, the firm’s chief financial officer swallowed hard, his throat bobbing nervously. "Sir, the accounts were frozen by the federal banking commission this morning. Someone audited our offshore subsidiaries using an internal override code. We didn't just lose three million—we’ve been legally red-flagged." Julian didn't blink. His razor-sharp jaw clenched, the muscle ticking violently beneath his skin. Five years. Exactly five years to the day since another anonymous data leak had destroyed his family name, driven his father to a shallow grave, and forced Julian to claw his way back from the absolute gutter to rebuild Thorne Global. Nobody destroyed him twice. Not on his watch. "Find out who authorized that audit," Julian commanded, his obsidian eyes narrowing into lethal slits. "And pull up every file on Vance Architectural. If their patriarch can't pay back the emergency bridge loan by midnight, foreclose on every square inch of their property." "Sir..." Hayes hesitated, clutching a manila folder to his chest. "There’s an alternative option on the table. Miss Elena Vance is currently downstairs in the lobby. She requested an audience regarding her father's debt." Julian’s gaze snapped up, dark lightning flashing in his eyes. Elena Vance. The name scraped against his memory like rusted barbed wire. She was the pristine, untouchable daughter of Arthur Vance—the very man whose architectural firm had allegedly cut corners on the municipal contracts that started Julian's nightmare years ago. Though Arthur had been cleared of direct criminal intent back then, Julian had kept a silent, predatory eye on the Vance family ever since. "Send her up," Julian murmured softly, a dark, chilling smile touching the corner of his lips. "Let’s see what Miss Vance is willing to trade to keep her family out of bankruptcy court." Ten floors below, Elena Vance took a slow, deep breath, smoothing down the lapels of her modest, thrift-store navy blazer. Her reflection in the elevator’s polished brass doors showed pale cheeks and dark shadows under her eyes, but her chin remained stubbornly lifted. She wasn't here to beg. She was here to negotiate. Or at least, that’s what she kept telling herself to stop her knees from trembling. The heavy oak double doors of the executive suite opened automatically as she approached. Hayes met her halfway, his expression a mixture of professional pity and disdain. "Mr. Thorne will see you now, Miss Vance. Step right through." Elena stepped into the cavernous office. The air smelled faintly of expensive cedar, black coffee, and absolute power. Floor-to-ceiling windows framed the gray twilight sky, and standing against the glass with his back to her was Julian Thorne. Even draped in a bespoke charcoal Armani suit that cost more than her entire college tuition, his posture radiated coiled, predatory tension. "Mr. Thorne," Elena said, her voice clear despite her racing pulse. "Thank you for granting me this meeting. Regarding my father’s loan extension—" Julian turned slowly. When his eyes locked onto hers, the breath caught instantly in Elena's throat. He was devastatingly handsome—all sharp angles, high cheekbones, and piercing, predatory eyes that seemed capable of dissecting her soul down to its marrow. But there was no welcome in his gaze. Only ice. "Miss Vance," Julian drawled, his deep, resonant voice rolling across the quiet room like distant thunder. He stepped forward, closing the distance between them with slow, deliberate strides. "How poetic. The daughter of Arthur Vance graces my office, begging for mercy." "I am not begging," Elena corrected swiftly, forcing her spine to stiffen. "I am proposing a structured restructuring plan that will guarantee the repayment of the bridge loan within six months—" "Quiet," Julian snapped, the single word cracking through the air like a whip. He stopped just inches away from her. He was tall enough that Elena had to tilt her head back to meet his gaze, trapping her in the suffocating radius of his presence. His scent—sandalwood and expensive amber—overwhelmed her senses. "You don't get to dictate terms here, Miss Vance," Julian murmured, his voice dropping to a dangerously intimate whisper as his gaze raked over her face, noting every flicker of panic she tried so desperately to conceal. "Your father’s firm is insolvent. His assets are forfeit. By all rights, I should strip him of everything he owns and throw him to the wolves." "Then why didn't you?" Elena challenged, her temper finally overriding her fear. Her hazel eyes flashed with sudden defiance. "Why am I standing in your office instead of receiving a foreclosure notice by courier?" A dark, dangerous smirk curved Julian’s lips. He reached out, his long, warm fingers brushing lightly against the lapel of her blazer, tracing the edge of her collarbone with a deliberate, humiliating intimacy. Elena shivered, hating herself for the traitorous jolt of electricity that shot through her veins. "Because bankruptcy is too easy," Julian whispered, his thumb resting dangerously close to her pulse point, feeling it hammer wildly against her skin. "I want something more valuable than liquidated assets." Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs. "What could you possibly want from me?" Julian leaned down until his lips hovered near her ear, his breath hot against her sensitive skin. "Marry me, Elena," he whispered, the words dripping with ice and venom. "Become my wife for one miserable year, and I'll wipe out your father’s debt entirely. Refuse, and watch your family lose everything before the sun rises tomorrow."
