At her parents’ house, I help her unload, but I see the looks her mother gives me and know that she’s well aware of what’s going on between Sandra and me. I don’t mind that - I know her mother has no ulterior motives, no will to harm me, and no desire to damage my life. Honestly, my concern for people talking behind my back has always been the fear that others will use that information against me.
“Thank you for doing this.” Her mother, Ethel, gives me a kind smile and a hug.
“I'm happy to help.” I give her a gentle squeeze, then let her go, turning to face Sandra.
Sandra steps into my arms, squeezing me tight, speaking softly into my ear. “Thank you, this means a lot. Please let me know if there’s anything I can do for you.”
