Alvia's POV.
“Don't scream” He says lowly, his deep green eyes boring into mine.
My body calms as it comes into recognition of the person in front of me. My eyes shutting momentarily in relief before blinking open again. When he sees that I'm calm, he lets go of my mouth and steps back, giving me a full view of him. He is wearing a black hoodie and jeans, his hands shoved into his pockets as he stares at me.
"What are you doing here?" The question falls from my lips before I can stop it.
"I wanted to see you" He says. "I can tell you have questions for me"
I lean off the wall and clear my throat, not allowing my anxiety get the best of me this time. There are things I need to know and the earlier I find out, the better.
"I do have questions. But we can't talk here" I tell him and he frowns.
"Why not?"
"Because this might take a while"
"Where do you wanna talk then?" He asks with a sigh.
"Follow me"
I immediately walk out of the corner, not bothering to look behind me because I can feel him following me closely. In a few minutes, after a few turns, my house finally comes into view and I walk towards it. We get to the door and I unlock it, leading the both of us inside and locking it again.
"What would you like to drink?" I ask him.
"Nothing. What do you want to know?"
I motion with my hands for him to sit on the couch and he does so, clasping his hands in front of him and looking straight into my eyes.
"What is your name?" Is the first thing I ask him. He gives me a meaningful look before answering.
"Deacon Rinon"
"Deacon... Do you know mine?"
"I do" He says.
Of course he does. All this wouldn't make sense if he didn't.
"I need to know what is going on here" I tell him in all seriousness "I don't understand why I feel this way towards you and I hate the fact that I am confused by it"
He combs his fingers through his hair and looks down and I can tell he is probably looking for ways to explain it to me. Finally, he looks up and his eyes land on mine,
"We are joined together by the mate bond" He says cryptically.
I furrow my brows. "Is that it?"
He sighs and rakes his fingers through his hair again, and that is when I realize that it is probably a habit when he is stressed out. I don't know why he is finding it difficult to explain this to me, but it only proves one thing. This is way stronger than I thought.
"Why is it so hard?" I ask him and he lets out a dry, humourless chuckle.
"Explaining all of this to you would mean telling you who I am"
It takes a while for me to register what he has just said and when I do, a frown rises to my face. For some reason, Miley's conspiracy theory comes back into my mind.
BONDS BETWEEN WEREWOLVES AND HUMANS.
"Who are you?" I dare to ask.
He just ignores me and keeps fighting with himself. I decide to make things easier for him by letting him know that I am not completely ignorant.
"My friend mentioned something yesterday..." I begin. This seems to catch his attention because his eyes fall on me instantly. "A conspiracy theory on the existence of... Werewolves here in Mayfair. Then she mentioned the bond, it could be between two werewolves or between a werewolf and a human"
His eyes are fixed on me now, an amazed glint in them.
"Does this have something to do with that? Are you...?"
"A werewolf. Yes" He finally says. My body doesn't even react to his reply, having expected it already. "You are right about the mate bond. That is exactly what this is"
"I also heard it is quite inescapable"
"Not entirely" He says, staring intently at me. "You could reject me"
"I could?"
"Yes"
"What does that mean for you then?"
"I won't find a match ever again" He shrugs. "You don't have to do it if you are not up for it"
"How do I reject you?"
My question seems to catch him off guard because his eyes suddenly snap to mine, wide and fearful. From his reaction I can tell that rejection is a big deal for werewolves. He suddenly clears his throat and looks down, composing himself.
"Repeat after me" He says. "I, Alvia Wellton..."
"I, Alvia Wellton..."
"Reject you, Deacon Rinon..."
"Reject you, Deacon Rinon..."
"As my mate..." His voice is strained now, coming out through clenched teeth as if he is forcing himself to keep talking.
"As my..." My voice trails off as I study him, his head snaps up to look at me, surprise swirling in his eyes. "I'm not going to reject you... I'm just not sure what this is all about yet. I'm not about to make you lonely for the rest of your life"
He lets out another dry chuckle and looks away, his hair falling over his forehead.
"You are one odd girl" He mutters, his voice deeper than usual.
My curiosity gets the best of me as I study him, and my lips move before I can control them.
"So you are a werewolf? What kind?"
"An Alpha" He says. "I rule a pack"
That explains his build and demeanor. He just has to be a leader of some sort with that aura.
"How cool is that?" I hum and he smiles. "I can't give in to this mate bond thingy just yet"
"Why?"
"Because I don't know if I'm ready for it"
"You can't control it, Alvia. If you aren't sure, then you should really just reject me now. If you don't, you won't be able to run away from it"
"What is the name of your pack?" He sighs when I ignore his question, but answers me anyway.
"Moon"
"Is it like a community?"
"It is more like a clan. A really big family"
"How many packs are there in Mayfair?"
"You sure ask a lot of questions"
"Tell me"
"Only a few. Less than ten, but the Moon rules them all"
I nod to myself as I digest this information. Who would have thought that the brightest city in the coast is also a home to other creatures aside humans?
"Why can't you tell people who you are?"
I flinch back with the way he suddenly snaps his head to me, his fierce eyes now boring into mine.
"You can't tell anyone" He says. "It would put you in danger too"
"In danger with who?"
He looks down again, his fingers fiddling with themselves before he finally speaks up.
"The humans are hunting us down. They want us dead"
