Chapter Three

Chapter Three. Zachary's Point of view. Damn that vanilla scent that I just can't get out of my nostrils! I chugged down on another glass of whiskey, my room door slamming shut as Yvette left. My chest was tight with a certain type of anger, exasperation or frustration, I don't know and I didn't care. I've bled my entire life preparing for the Alpha role, I still do and I wasn't planning on nullifying all my efforts by choosing an incapable wolf as Luna. Lindsey is strong, beautiful, and my gamma's sister. She has this allure that other she-wolves do not possess, it's why I chose her. Yvette is a simple Omega, weak and hardly appealing, I watched her from the podium earlier this morning, when that flash of light shimmered, my knees buckled and my wolf senses heightened. I knew what it meant instantly, the moon goddess had given me a mate and it's not Lindsey. It seems even more like an attempt at mocking me when you realize I've been expecting my mate for the past seven years and the moon goddess can only provide me one after I had given up. My eyes shot towards the audience immediately, whoever it was ought to know that I wasn't trading my Lindsey for some destiny wolf that I no longer needed. I saw her barely noticeable among the crowd as she joined the other wolves in search of her mate. The one mistake she made was coming up that podium. I would have rejected her either way but she chose to make it public by calling the pack's attention. I've told myself it doesn't really matter what anyone thinks, I won't be held responsible for her mistakes. I took off my shirt preparing to go to bed, two weeks more and this pack would have an official Luna. And probably, one more dead wolf. My eyes raged with anger as I turned to the wolf who had just barged into my room. “Care to explain why you came into my room without a knock?” I asked him. He stopped mid-tremble, seems like the tone of my voice scared him more than whatever he came in here for did. “Alpha, th-e the Luna, Sh-e’s been stabbed.” He stammered. His words hit me like a gong to the skull. “Where is she?” I asked him bolting out of the room, I didn't even wait for answer. I headed straight for her room, s**t! Whoever the hell tried to hurt her would pay. I should have let her stay with in my room tonight. I stopped in the doorway at her room, my eyes scanning the entire bedroom until I spotted her body lying almost lifeless on the ground. The color had drained from her face and she had lost a few pints of blood. I lifted her up immediately, bridal style, I wasn't even worried that the only thing I had on were my trousers or that I was barefooted. I raced down stairs to my car and placed her in it, then I started the engine. This wasn't one of those times when I would decide to wait for my driver, it's one of the times when I had to act fast. Losing her is not a word in my dictionary. I slammed my feet hard on the brakes when we arrived at the hospital. They had the wheeler ready to take her in as I already called beforehand. “I want Dr. Stiles to attend to her.” I told one of the nurses who wheeled her in. She nodded her head in submission while I followed after them. They took her to the emergency unit, damn it, I wanted to go in but they won't let me. I stayed behind in the emergency room, my hands clutched together as with my head bowed. Whoever did this was going to pay with their life, I don't f*****g who they are. “Alpha, Alpha.” I raised up my head to find my Beta, Luke Wheeler and my Gamma Cooper Sullivan standing above me. “We came here as soon as we heard.” Luke said taking a seat beside me. To be f*****g honest, I didn't care where he sat, all I wanted was for the doctors to come right out the door and tell me that Lindsey miraculously survived. I have been here for forty minutes and they haven't given me a single news about her. I heaved a sigh clutching my chest with my hands, “Did you find out who the f**k did this?” I asked none of them in particular but I expected whoever knew about it to answer. “Yes.” They said in unison. I clenched my fists, “Who is it?” They both seemed hesitant to answer that. “Who is it?” I repeated. Luke just averted his gaze until Cooper spoke up. “It's her head maid.” He replied. “Yvette.” I muttered ruffling the hair up on my head, for a second, I ran my tongue over the edge of teeth. “Where did she get a knife?” That was the only logical question. “She used Lindsey’s dagger, it was pretty unplanned from what I profiled. I assume it's as a result of this night's events.” Cooper told me, of course it is, even a fool would be able to point that out. “Where is she now?” “John has locked her up in the dungeon.” Luke was the one who gave the reply this time and it didn't satisfy me. I wanted her to be more than just locked up, she had to experience the same crime she tried to commit against Lindsey done against her too. “Have the guards prepare the square for an execution. I want her dead at dawn tomorrow.” I announced. Luke stared at me like I had just given a death sentence, I literally have. “You can't do that, we have an event planned for the Alpha King tomorrow. We can't schedule an execution for the same day.” He protested. “Why not?” “It wouldn't portray the right image.” He said and that didn't make sense to me. “I don't care what the right image is, I just want her dead. He arrives here at nine tomorrow, let her work be done before then.” I make sure to emphasize my last sentence, so Luke knows this isn't one of those orders he can find a loophole around. He should follow my command to the letter. He bowed his head in submission, “I would get it all ready.” “You know what…” I paused. “I've changed my mind… let Cooper handle the execution instead.” He is the only one I trust to do this, Lindsey is his sister meaning she holds more importance to us both. I looked at my Gamma for confirmation that he is up for this and he nodded at me before he leaves. “Zach, maybe you're not thinking straight, I think…” “I am thinking straight, Luke!” I shot at him before he could complete his sentence. “I'm just saying you need to hear from both sides or you might kill an innocent person.” “Do you mean to say that Lindsey purposely stabbed herself and framed it on Yvette?” I questioned him. That's exactly what he is implying and I won't take that. He shook his head, “I didn't mean it like that.” “It doesn't matter how you mean it, just go!” I ordered. “Alpha.” He called. “Leave.” The next thing I heard is the sound of his footsteps leaving the waiting room. I sighed and checked the time on my wristwatch. 22 : 52 : 50 I wasn't overreacting, I'm reacting just fine. 07 : 15 : 08, The next morning. My heart is at rest only because Lindsey didn't die last night, I swear if she did then Yvette's execution would be by fire and not by the sword. “How are you feeling?” I asked her, my fingers tracing her jawline. “I'm fine.” She replied, her voice is still weak from the pain in her body. “How did this happen?” I could ask from both sides like Luke suggested, that wouldn't matter because Lindsey's words are the only ones that hold meaning to me. Yvette is just another Omega fighting for my attention and to think she refused my offer last night when she basically gets the same benefit. “I don't know Zach, it was just fast…” She faltered, “I had just come back from the bathroom, I saw her holding the dagger and then she…” The tears fell down freely from her eyes as she holds on to me shakingly. “I just don't know what the hell I did to her.” She sobbed. “You didn't do anything.” I assured her, removing a strand of stray blonde hair from her face. “I know but I want to see her, Zach.” Lindsey started and it caught me off guard and I listened to what more she has to say. “I just want to know why she did this, if I can talk to her.” “You can't.” I told her, my voice sharper than intended. She looked at me, “Why not? I just want her to tell me why she did this, please.” “Lindsey, she tried to kill you. I won't have that happen again, not on my watch.” “But she won't be able to attack me, not if she's restrained.” Lindsey suggested. “Please.” She said again, damn it! I hate hearing that word from people I love. “Fine, but I would be right at your door, if she tries to do anything, you scream. Got it?” I asked, she nodded and that satisfied me more than anything ever would.
