Dark clouds swirled above the Lake of the Fallen Star as Lord Varyn slowly walked down the hill toward Amara, Kael, and Lumo. The wind grew stronger, and the peaceful lake began to ripple again.
Amara stepped closer to Kael.
“That’s the same warrior from the tower,” she whispered.
Kael nodded, gripping the Star Shard tightly in one hand and the glowing Star Fragment in the other.
“Yes. And this time he came prepared.”
Lord Varyn stopped a few steps away from the lake. His dark armor reflected the lightning flashing across the sky.
“You’ve done excellent work for me,” he said coldly. “Finding the fragment saved me a great deal of time.”
Lumo crossed his arms angrily.
“Yeah, well, you’re not getting it.”
Lord Varyn smiled slightly.
“We shall see.”
He raised his hand, and a wave of dark energy shot across the ground toward them.
Kael quickly lifted the Star Shard.
A bright silver shield of light appeared around them just as the dark energy struck. The two forces collided with a loud crash that echoed across the lake.
Amara looked amazed.
“You can do that?”
Kael shook his head.
“The shard is reacting to the fragment’s power.”
But Lord Varyn was not finished.
With another movement of his hand, several Shadow Seekers appeared from the darkness around the hills.
They flew toward the lake with terrifying speed.
Lumo jumped nervously.
“Oh great. Flying shadows again.”
The Lake Spirit rose from the water once more, its glowing blue form towering above the lake.
“THE LAKE WILL NOT FALL TO DARKNESS,” it declared.
With a powerful movement, the spirit sent a huge wave crashing toward the Shadow Seekers.
The creatures screeched as the glowing water struck them, forcing them back.
Amara looked at Kael.
“We need to get out of here!”
Kael nodded.
“But if Varyn gets the fragment, everything we’ve done will be wasted.”
Amara thought quickly.
Then she had an idea.
“Give me the fragment,” she said.
Kael looked surprised.
“What are you going to do?”
“Trust me,” Amara replied.
Kael hesitated for a moment, then handed her the glowing star crystal.
Amara ran toward the edge of the lake.
“Hey Varyn!” she shouted.
Lord Varyn turned his glowing red eyes toward her.
“Looking for this?”
She held the Star Fragment high.
Varyn stepped forward immediately.
“Yes. Bring it to me.”
But Amara shook her head.
“I don’t think so.”
Before Varyn could react, Amara threw the fragment high into the air above the lake.
The crystal spun through the sky, shining brightly.
The Lake Spirit quickly lifted its glowing hand.
A stream of water caught the fragment and carried it safely back down toward Kael.
Kael caught it quickly.
Lumo laughed.
“Nice teamwork!”
Lord Varyn’s eyes burned with anger.
“You cannot keep it forever.”
He raised both hands and unleashed a powerful wave of dark energy toward them.
But this time the Lake Spirit stood in front of them.
The spirit’s glowing form expanded, blocking the attack with a wall of water and light.
“YOU WILL NOT TAKE THE STAR FRAGMENT,” the spirit declared.
The clash of light and darkness shook the ground around the lake.
Amara grabbed Kael’s arm.
“Now’s our chance!”
Kael nodded.
“Run!”
The three of them ran toward the forest path on the far side of the lake while the spirit continued fighting Lord Varyn.
Lumo looked back as they ran.
“That lake spirit is amazing!”
Kael held the fragment and shard tightly.
“We have to keep moving. Varyn will recover soon.”
Amara slowed slightly as they reached the edge of the valley.
She looked at the glowing crystal.
“So what happens now?”
Kael studied the fragment carefully.
The Star Shard began glowing brighter again.
A new map slowly formed in the air.
This time it showed a tall mountain covered in snow and ice.
Kael looked serious.
“The Frozen Mountain of Arkael.”
Lumo groaned dramatically.
“First a desert… now a frozen mountain?”
Amara smiled.
“Well… at least we won’t be hot anymore.”
But far behind them, at the lake, the battle between the Lake Spirit and Lord Varyn continued.
And deep within the dark clouds above, a much greater power was beginning to awaken.
The journey toward the Hidden Key was entering its most dangerous stage yet. 🌟📖
