Chapter 2

Heather, sat with her daughter in the dining room, along with Dolores. Her daughter was eating cereal while she and the beautiful woman were having little conversations to pass time as they waited for Logan and James.                      They had spent the night in a motel, and she couldn't sleep cause her heart was in her mouth. Her husband had unintentionally put she and their daughter in danger, she couldn't believe that people had been to her house, killed their family dog and used his blood as ink.                 For two weeks now, she couldn't sleep and had been on the run, although James and her husband worked in the same field, she wanted nothing to do with the man, but had no choice than to call him.                  “Are you okay dear?”. She raised her eyes towards Dolores. “You look like you need a rest”.                              Heather, smiled and nods her head. “Just need to speak with James, real quick”.                 Dolores, nodded and stood up. “Ill go check on them then”.                 Heather, turned to her daughter, who was quietly eating her cereal. Jade, was a powerhouse, but since she walked into their old home and saw flakes (her dog) mutilated, she's been quiet.              “Sweetie, are you okay?”. Heather asked, running her hand through Jade's curls.                Jade, nodded not looking at her mother and Heather, sighed wishing her husband were here. They were just trying to deal with the fact that he wasn't going to be around anymore and then Flakes, happened and now she didn't even know what to do anymore.              Tears welled in her eyes and she blinked them away, as James and Logan, walked in.                  Logan, saw the tears in her eyes and the protective hand she had on the back of the chair, Jade sat on. The woman was tough, he'd give her that, she had evasively managed to get away from madmen with her daughter and from a whole state without making a glitch. She sure was a military brat.                     “James, can I have a word before you leave”. Heather, stood up and Jade's eyes widened..              “Grandpa, you're leaving?”. Jade, asked her big brown eyes instantly welling with tears.                Heather, winced at her daughter's words, turning to James. “Yeah pumpkin, I need to get to work, but I'll visit you everyday OK and Miss Dolores and Logan are going to take good care of you and your mother OK”.              Jade, shook her head and the first tear fell. “Please don't leave, I'm scared grandpa”.              Jumping from the chair she ran to James and leached herself to his legs and the tears finally fell from Heather,as she heard her daughter's sob.                       Logan's, felt his heart break and he could hear Dolores, silent sobs from behind him. This was a broken mother and daughter traumatized by the events happening to them and he didn't know what got into him as his protective side kicked in bending down to the little girl's level.                     “Jade, I promise you, your grandpa is going to visit everyday I'll make sure of it”. He bent down to her level, his hand rubbing soothingly on her back. “And I promise you'll never be scared again cause I'll protect you with my life”.              She raised her head and looked at him with big brown eyes, he was wrong, she looked exactly like her mother, very beautiful.                Jade, slowly let go of James's leg, and held out her little pinky. “You promise?”.             Her eyes were filled with tears and her cheeks and nose were red. He held his out and they pinky swore. *******                   Dolores and Logan, sat by the pool just enjoying the cool weather, and remaining spring air,  both in their own little bubbles. The mother and daughter were sleeping peacefully, in one bedroom and nothing much had been said after the moment they all had, in his dinning room.               “So, she's his daughter?”. Dolores, asked breaking the silence. Probably referring to Heather.                      Logan, nodded. His mind wandering to schools and probably therapists that Jade, should see, cause he knew what she was going through was very traumatic.                  “Does she know?”. Dolores, asked again finally breaking him from his thought bubble.               “I don't know. But I think she does”. He answered. “Know any good secured kindergarten she could go to?”.                 Dolores, head snapped to his direction.  “Haven't seen this intense Logan, in a while”.                 “There's a crazy man after an innocent woman and child, killed their dog and made them up and leave everything they've known, of course I'm pissed”.                Dolores, nodded her head understanding Logan's point. She had only seen this intense side twice, once when her late husband had put her in a hospital and the other time when his older sister's ex  boyfriend had threatened her when she was pregnant with his nephew.                        He haven't seen his family since last year's Thanksgiving, cause of an emergency but the love and relationship was still there even if his mom gave him hell for not visiting as often as he should.               “Are you sure the child would even want to go back to school?”. Dolores, asked.             He shrugged his shoulders as they just sat in silence watching the view, until he heard pitter patter, undeniably sounds of a little feet. Turning around, he made a mental note to get the pool closed and Dolores must have heard his thoughts cause she moved inside and minutes later the pool started closing.                Jade, watched the old woman walk past, a contagious smile on her face. She turned back to the man who was walking towards her with a small smile in place as be bent to her height..              “Are you okay sugar?”. She smiled for the first time and then it turned to a frown before it saddened.             Logan, bit his lips, not knowing what to say and luckily for him Dolores, sauntered back and bent next to him and he stood up.             “Baby, you're mom still sleeping?”. Jade nodded. “Want to help me make dinner and get a snack?”.          Jade, nodded and her curls bounced. “Come on then”. Dolores, held out her hand and Jade took, it and in minutes they were gone.                       Wow, this is going to be hard, Logan, said to himself running his hand through his hair.             His phone rang in the pocket of his sweatpants, pulling it out, Stacy name flashed across his screen. f**k. If it was three days ago he'd have her over in a heartbeat but now he couldn't and he cursed.                “Stacy, how was Amsterdam?”. He answered walking to his outdoor kitchen, taking a seat on the oval plushy couch.               Her sexy southern twang rang in his ears and he sighed. He needed a release but couldn't go get one or have her come over.                   ”No, I'm out of town”. He lied when she asked if he could come over. “I know I missed you too, I'll call you when I get back”.            The relationship between them was strictly platonic and open, they both had a lot going and weren't ready to settle especially Stacy, cause Logan, was having second thoughts now.                 He couldn't bring in a woman with a child in his house, who had gone through so much and was only used to having her mother and father. Logan, would try is best until they were safe.          Now he knew why the chief had asked him, when he set his mind on something he commits to it and make sure the results were always almost perfect.  ******* Don't forget to vote comment and share
