Chapter 001: Rejected Before the Moon
The Moon Goddess was supposed to bless today.
Instead, she watched Lyra Ashwood's heart shatter.
The Silver Moon Pack had gathered beneath the ancient Moon Tree, where glowing lanterns swayed gently in the cool night breeze. Laughter filled the air as pack members celebrated the annual Mating Ceremony, a sacred event where destined mates accepted one another before the Moon Goddess.
Lyra stood at the center of the clearing, her hands trembling inside the white ceremonial dress her mother had sewn years before her death.
Tonight, Alpha Kael Stormfang would officially accept her as his mate.
At least... that was what everyone believed.
She searched the crowd until her eyes found Kael. Tall, broad-shouldered, and devastatingly handsome, he looked every bit the powerful Alpha destined to lead the Silver Moon Pack. His expression, however, was unreadable.
The pack elder stepped forward.
"By the will of the Moon Goddess, Alpha Kael Stormfang, do you accept Lyra Ashwood as your fated mate?"
Silence.
The wind suddenly felt colder.
Kael stared at Lyra, his golden wolf eyes hard as stone.
"I refuse."
The words echoed across the clearing.
Gasps rippled through the crowd.
Lyra froze.
"...What?"
"I reject Lyra Ashwood as my mate."
A cruel smile tugged at the corner of his lips.
"I deserve a Luna worthy of standing beside an Alpha. Not an orphan healer who brings nothing but weakness to my pack."
The world tilted beneath Lyra's feet.
She felt hundreds of eyes watching her—some filled with pity, others with amusement.
Her chest tightened painfully.
"Kael..." she whispered. "Please... tell me this is a joke."
"It isn't."
Before she could speak again, another woman stepped forward.
Princess Selene.
The Alpha King's beautiful daughter.
She wrapped her arm around Kael possessively.
"Our marriage will unite the strongest bloodlines in the kingdom," Selene announced proudly. "A weak she-wolf could never give this pack the future it deserves."
The crowd erupted into applause.
Every clap struck Lyra like another knife to the heart.
Tears blurred her vision, but she refused to let them fall.
Not here.
Not in front of people who wanted to see her broken.
She slowly removed the silver mate necklace from around her neck and placed it at Kael's feet.
"You've made your choice."
Her voice barely trembled.
"I hope it brings you everything you wanted."
Without waiting for a reply, Lyra turned and walked away.
Behind her, the celebration resumed as if she had never existed.
None of them noticed the strange silver light spreading across the full moon above.
None of them heard the whisper carried by the wind.
"The true king has awakened."
Miles away, deep within the forbidden Black Fang Kingdom...
A pair of silver eyes snapped open.
The feared Lycan King sat upright on his throne.
For the first time in ten years...
His wolf had sensed its mate.
