"have you seen it?" Mia squealed from the other end of the phone. I could practically feel the excitement from her.
"Application for what? I didn't apply for anything" my gaze narrowed as I stared into nothing in particular " mia." I said slowly "What did you do?"
"It's a long story but I'll make it short. A friend said he was looking for someone to babysit and I thought it was a really good idea."
Wait. Did she just say babysit.
"You signed me up for a babysitting job" I was pissed and surprised
"It's not what you think?"
"Is it not?"
"Okay it is. But the pay is really good. I mean really good" she purred
My ears perked up "how much is it?" I asked slowly
"It's seventy dollars per hour and you get the weekends off"
What the heck! Who pays that much for a babysitter. This family must be massively rich.
Wait. It seems too good to be true.
"Is this a scam? How sure are you that it's real"
"What's going on." My mom asked, her words laced with curiosity.
"Nothing" I mouthed
Mia laughed "that was my exact reaction when he told me about it. It felt too good to be true, but it is"
I flipped the phone to my other ear, holding it in between my head and shoulder. I took my mom's hand and led her to her room.
She wasn't going to admit it, but I knew she was tired from just standing too long. She didn't protest as she let me hold her.
"So what do you say? Will you take the job"
I was skeptical. I knew mia was smart, she wouldn't fall prey to any scam but a part of me that knew how hard it was to get money was holding me back.
If I took this job, I would be able to pay mom's medical bill and get her the care she needs. And then the rent......oh my gosh.
"I'll take it"
"Really?. Yes" mia squealed, almost bursting my eardrums. Again.
A feeling of nausea nestled itself at the pit of my stomach as I followed a lanky, red haired man down a wide echoing hallway and into the living room.
The house was ginomous, it felt more like a mansion than a house. The chandeliers were magnificent, the walls were lined with paintings that seemed to be otherworldly. The air was thick with the wealth that this family possessed. There was silence and the only sound that could be heard was the squeaking of my sneakers against the polished marble floor.
But yet...the house felt empty. It didn't feel like a home.
I glanced around, not a single family portrait was in sight. The paintings on the wall were marvellous, but it made the halls feel more like an art gallery. There was no candid photo, no drawings taped on the fridge. The house felt cold.
I began to wonder if anyone even lived here at all.
"Take a seat miss brooks" the lanky guy said, pushing his glasses higher on his nose.
I sat on the edge of the armchair, folding my hands neatly in my lap.
He adjusted his glasses and began flipping through a folder.
"Is this you're first time with children miss brooks?" He asked, his voice was monotone.
"Ugh....no. I've worked with them before"
I was always skipping through various jobs to get by. Babysitting was one of them.
"Tell me miss brooks. Are you patient with children?"
My brows furrowed together. That was unexpected.
"Yes" I replied politely
He cleared his throat "Harper is a lot to handle. She's......." he paused, searching "unique"
"Unique? In what way?"
I love kids but please don't tell me she has some form of rich kid syndrome. I do not want to handle that even if the pay is good.
Is this why the pay is so high. She's so 'unique' that no one could handle her and now they'll just take anyone that was willing.
And then......
"Harper!" A woman's sharp voice called from somewhere in the hallway.
A blur of brown hair shot into the room.
A little girl, no more than nine, burst into the room. Her fingers clutching a brown teddy bear to her chest.
Her blue eyes were wide with mischief as she crashed right into my knees. A surprised squeak escaped her lip.
"Oh my gosh!" I exclaimed in surprise
Instinctively, I scooped her up into my arms before she fell backwards. Harper leaned into me, her teddy bear squishing between us.
A breathless servant rushed in with a frown on her face. "Miss Harper, you need to eat your peas. Running will not change it."
So this was the 'unique' child
"I'm not gonna eat them" Harper said defiantly as she stuck her tongue out. She buried her face into my shoulder like it was her safe spot.
I glanced between the child and the servant. I gently tipped her chin up
"You know" I said softly "when I was your age I hated vegetables. But then my mother told me a story about them"
Her piercing blue eyes lit up with curiosity"What was the story"
She looked so innocent, so.... beautiful. I suddenly felt the need to protect her.
"My mother said that vegetables were magic stones guarding you at night. They keep you safe and chase away nightmares." I paused " Do you ever get nightmares?"
Harper's big blue eyes blinked, and then her lashes lowered "sometimes. They're really bad when they come"
I smiled "well then you need vegetables to fend them off. Eat them all and they'll guard you when you sleep. No monsters will dare touch you when you eat your vegetables"
Harper pouted "but I don't like vegetables. They taste yucky" she made a disgusted face.
"That's because they're magic. Magic doesn't taste sweet"
Her grip on her teddy bear loosened as she climbed off my lap. She moved towards the servant. She sighed like a middle aged woman " I'll eat the vegetables." She paused, pointing her chubby fingers in my direction "but only if the pretty lady sits with me"
The lanky man looked startled, adjusting his thick framed glasses again. The servant frowned but hesitated.
I chuckled softly "I'd be honored to sit with you Harper"
The tall lanky man cleared his throat "well it seems Harper has decided for us" he scribble something in the file, then he looked up "you're hired."
My brows rose "really? Just like that?"
Before the tall lanky man could answer, the air in the room shifted.
The sound of heavy footsteps sounded from the hall, commanding attention before the figure even appeared.
And then........
A man stepped through the doorway. His suit was tailored to perfection, his expression was hard and unreadable.
But when my gaze lifted to his perfectly chiseled face, my breath caught in my throat.
It was him.
The stranger I had spent the night with. The stranger that had seen every inch of my naked body.
What was he doing here.
Harper leaped up in excitement as he walked in "daddy! Daddy look! I found my new babysitter!"
The man's jaw tightened as recognition flashed through his eyes.
Daddy?
No f*****g way.
