The merciless midday sun beat down on me as I trudged along the endless road. I'd lost track of how many miles I'd walked since dawn. My body was a battlefield—sweat mingled with blood, soaking through the makeshift pad I'd fashioned from scraps of the maid's uniform.
Each step sent waves of pain through my abdomen. The bleeding hadn't stopped. If anything, it seemed worse.
