AdairAuction
The window to my old Toyota squeaks as I bring it to let some fresh air in.
“Lil are you okay..”
Micheal wasn't asking about my wellbeing but I answered as if he had, the cool evening air whipping across my heated skin.
“ Yes, I'm fine , Micheal.”
My heart thuds harder against my chest.
I always hated it when he called my lil instead of Lily.I preferred ‘baby’ even though I didn't like it either.. .
“ It's only going to be for a while, besides I think we deserve the break, don't you agree?”
You mean you want a break..
“ Yes of course, you're right. “
“ Okay, I'll hang up now. Drive safe, bye.”
“ I Love you,bye.”
The line cuts, silence fills my car once again.
I don't know whether to be angry, upset or sad that my boyfriend since high just proposed an open relationship out of the blue OVER the phone..!
I am on my way to the Adair private property for the The University of Adair’s first auction of the month, dressed in a spaghetti beige dress that hugs my body.
The soft material against my skin is the only comfort I get as I near my destination.
But the attached corset around my waist suddenly feels too tight and the tiny flowers feel like a mockery at what should have been a pleasant night.
I turn down the Adair road, the famous Scandinavian mansion coming into focus.
The Adair Auction is a thrice in a year event hosted by the founders of the university and the country's most influential family, to help art students network and showcase their art.
And as a teacher of the art, apperantly, I have been selected among a couple others to be present.
I would have altered to stay in bed with a bucket of popcorn and binge my favorite shows after Micheal just dropped the O bomb on me .
As if it was a normal Tuesday and there was nothing wrong with what he just asked…
I pull up In Front of the stadium-sized mansion.
A valet in uniform immediately comes up to take my keys.
I nearly stumbled in the yellow stilletos my mother insisted I wear and move out of his way.
I ignore the pointed looks to my old and used car from the guest loitering about the entrance and follow the employee around the house to an expansive backyard.
I gasp at the sight before me.
Jazz music plays softly in the background, setting the mood for the stylish decoration with rich golden colours and important people to match.
A number of paintings from students I recognize from the screening are placed around vantage points for everyone to admire as they mingle.
I spot a few colleagues from Adair and move to them.
“ Now I want you to imagine everyone here is wearing a diaper .Approach them. Make small talk, network. That's the point of the auction, alright?”
“ Yes Professor.”
“Okay Kevin.”
Kevin, one of the many English professors , encourages the selected students for the event to put themselves out there right as I tap on his shoulder.
The students disperse.
Kevin turns around, ready to say something but nothing comes out once his gaze falls on me.
“ Kevin…”
I greet, consciously squeezing my arms together and fingering a flower on my dress..
I want nothing more than to pull the dress over my generous cleavage and hide my face behind a manicured hedge.
I resist the burning urge, biting my cheek.
“ Lily? Am sorry. It's just you look..” he waves a hand at me “.. different-”
“ -Different ? I know.”
“ Am sorry , you look stunning.”
“ Thank you.”
I let my gaze travel up his suit clad body and his black hair slicked back.
“ You too. Different I mean but you look great too.”
I nervously laugh to hide my nerves.
I clear my throat when he continues smiling at me, eyes on my chest.
“ So, what's happening?”
My eyes roam over the twin stairs, the bright yellow lights and the guest, landing back on Kevin.
He averts his gaze.
“ Oh just the usual nothing much.”
I stare at him blankly.
“ Oh, sorry. This is your first time. Let me show you around. Excuse me?”
Kevin flags down a waiter and downs a drink in one go.
He proceeds to show me around, explaining how these events go.
I missed the founder and the president's address earlier on but the fun part is yet to begin.
The alcohol and free food.According to Kevin.
We roam, admiring some of the artistic works and making small talk with some of the guest.
“ Here I want to introduce you to Mr Adair.”
My heart pumps faster at the prospect of meeting the country's most successful business mogul.
Kevin points to the top of the stairs , where a man who looks to be in his sixties stands with a woman and a gentleman beside him.
We start torwards them but before we can reach them a couple in colour coordinated fits get to them first.
“ s**t, how is it harder to get an audience with him even when we’re in the same room.”
They have their backs to us so they can’t see us.
I curiously stare at the man beside Mr and Mrs Adair.
He seems to be taller, with the same dark hair and a presence about him that makes the lady before Mr Adair keep blushing.
I surveyed the open space, and sure enough, every eye , mostly female, turned toward him.
I hear myself ask before I can stop myself.
“Who is that?”
Kevin follows my line of sight, leaning into me he says.
“ That .That is Montgomery Carter Adair, the heir to the Adair empire, the only son of the Adairs and..”
Whatever else Kevin says is lost to me, because in that moment, he turns .
His eyes moving over the guest gathered beneath him, searching.
His eyes sparkle as they land on me.
Or Maybe it's the nerves?
My breath is knocked out of me as a drawing pull towards him hits me hard.
I swear he has the prettiest ,bluest of eyes I have ever seen, even from this distance.
I feel a nudge to my side.
“Hmm?”
I break eye contact with him , turning my gaze to Kevin.
“ Do you wanna go get a drink?”
Kevin nods at the bar with the fancy bartender shaking and mixing staff, his hand sheepishly moving behind his neck .
I nod following him, when I look back Montgomery isn't where he was a minute ago…
