The Night the Moon Turned Red
The wind howled through the towering pine trees, carrying with it the scent of rain, damp earth, and something far more sinister. It was the kind of night that made the bravest souls bolt their doors and whisper prayers before sleep. High above, the full moon should have shone like polished silver. Instead, it glowed a deep crimson. No ordinary person noticed the difference. But every werewolf in the world froze. Every vampire looked toward the heavens. And every ancient creature hiding in the shadows knew one terrifying truth. The Blood Moon had returned. Lyra Ashbourne tightened her scarf around her neck as she hurried down the deserted road leading home. At twenty-two, she had learned to ignore the strange things that seemed to follow her throughout her life. She had been abandoned as a baby on the steps of a small orphanage with nothing but a silver pendant around her neck. The pendant bore an unfamiliar crest—a wolf intertwined with a bat beneath a blood-red moon. No one had ever recognized the symbol. Growing up, Lyra often experienced vivid dreams: forests drenched in moonlight, wolves bowing before her, and pale-eyed vampires whispering her name. She always woke with tears on her cheeks and a pounding heart. She dismissed them as nightmares. Tonight felt different. The air itself seemed alive. Her skin prickled with unease. She glanced at the sky and stopped walking. The moon... It was red. "That's... impossible," she whispered. A sudden chill swept over her, and the streetlights flickered one by one before plunging the road into darkness. Then came the growl. Low. Deep. Hungry. Lyra's pulse raced. "Who's there?" Silence answered. She took another cautious step. Snap! A twig broke somewhere behind her. She spun around, but nothing was there. Her breathing quickened. Another growl echoed, this time much closer. Before she could react, a massive black wolf burst from the forest. Its glowing golden eyes locked onto hers, and saliva dripped from its enormous fangs. Lyra screamed and ran. Branches whipped across her face as she fled into the woods, her boots slipping on wet leaves. Behind her, the beast crashed through the undergrowth with terrifying speed. It was gaining on her. She didn't understand why. She had never seen anything like it. She stumbled over a tree root and crashed hard onto the forest floor. Pain shot through her ankle as she tried to stand, but it refused to support her weight. The wolf emerged from the darkness. Towering. Muscular. Its growl shook the ground beneath her. Lyra scrambled backward until her back hit the trunk of an ancient oak. There was nowhere left to run. The beast lowered its head, preparing to strike. Tears welled in her eyes. "So... this is how it ends." The wolf lunged. A blur of black shot between them. Steel flashed beneath the moonlight. The wolf was thrown backward with a deafening roar. A tall man stood before Lyra, his broad shoulders blocking her view. His black coat fluttered in the wind, and his golden eyes glowed with an unnatural intensity. He held a silver blade stained with dark blood. The wolf snarled but hesitated. The stranger spoke in a cold, commanding voice. "Leave." The single word carried immense authority. The wolf whimpered, lowered its head, and disappeared into the forest. Lyra stared at the mysterious man in disbelief. "Who... who are you?" He slowly turned toward her. For a moment, time itself seemed to stop. His sharp features, dark hair, and piercing golden eyes made him look less like a man and more like a king carved from shadow and moonlight. But what unsettled Lyra most was the way he looked at her—not with curiosity, but with stunned recognition. His expression hardened. "It can't be..." Before he could say another word, a piercing scream echoed through the forest. The temperature dropped. Mist rolled between the trees. Another figure appeared atop a nearby cliff, cloaked in darkness. His skin was pale as snow, his long white hair shimmered beneath the crimson moon, and his crimson eyes glowed like burning embers. He smiled—a calm, dangerous smile. "After all these centuries..." he said softly, his voice carrying through the silent forest, "we've finally found her." The golden-eyed stranger stepped protectively in front of Lyra. "Stay back, vampire." The pale man chuckled. "I wasn't speaking to you, Alpha King." Lyra's heart nearly stopped. Alpha King? Vampire? This had to be a nightmare. Yet the fear in the air felt painfully real. The crimson moon blazed brighter overhead. Far away, hidden in an ancient temple, an old prophet opened his blind eyes and whispered, "The Blood Moon Heir has awakened... and the war for her soul begins."
