Chapter Twenty-Four The combination of the fresh country air at the farm and the exercise the girls had engaged in at the rollerblade rink left them both physically exhausted. Even so, Celia insisted that they all have a singalong on the drive back home, because she was afraid that they might fall asleep from the rocking-motion of the car. She needed them to fall asleep the minute their little heads hit the pillow, so that they would not be aware of what was taking place downstairs. When they arrived home, Celia ran them both a bubble bath while she prepared them fish-finger sandwiches for supper. As she hoped, the pair of them were fighting the torpor of sleep while they were eating their meal so, just to make sure, Celia fixed them both a mug of steaming hot chocolate to finish them
