Chapter One: The Man I Fell in Love With
The house was quiet.
Everything seemed perfect. A beautiful home, a successful businessman, a loving wife, and two wonderful children. From the outside, Audrey and David's family looked like the kind of family anyone would envy.
But sometimes, the most beautiful homes hide the ugliest secrets.
And sometimes, the silence before a storm is the most terrifying part of all.
A door slammed upstairs.
Footsteps hurried across the hallway, followed by the sharp sound of a door being flung open.
Audrey barged into the bedroom, her chest rising and falling as she stared at the man standing before her.
David.
Her husband. The man she had loved with every part of herself. The man she had trusted enough to build a family with.
And the very same man who had just shattered her heart into pieces.
"What the hell is wrong with you? This is definitely not the man I fell in love with!"
David, who had been adjusting his cufflinks in front of the mirror, glanced at her with an expression of pure irritation. There was no guilt on his face. No shame. Not even the slightest hint of regret.
"Oh, please, shut up. You have no right to talk to me that way."
Audrey stared at him, momentarily stunned.
Had he really just said that to her?
She had imagined this conversation countless times since discovering his affair, but never in her wildest dreams had she expected him to stand there so casually, as though she were the one who had done something wrong.
"How can you even say such a thing to me after I caught you red-handed cheating on me with your stupid receptionist?"
David's expression hardened.
"Hey, she's not stupid."
For a moment, Audrey couldn't speak.
Out of everything he could have said, that was what he chose to defend?
Not their marriage. Not the years they had spent together. Not the woman who had stood beside him through everything.
His receptionist.
"How can you even support her at such a critical moment?" Audrey demanded, her voice trembling with disbelief.
David let out an impatient sigh and picked up his wristwatch.
"I think you should just go to your room. We'll talk about this later."
"No! I don't want to talk about this later. Now is perfectly fine!"
"You're really getting on my nerves," David snapped. "I'm already very, very angry."
That was when Audrey finally broke.
Tears spilled down her cheeks, blurring the face of the man standing before her. She stepped closer and struck his chest with her palms, not hard enough to hurt him, but with all the frustration and pain she could no longer keep inside.
"How can you even say that?"
Her voice cracked.
"You are not my Dave! You are not the Dave I fell in love with. Get me my Dave back!"
For one brief second, she searched his face for something familiar. A flicker of tenderness. A hint of the man who used to hold her hands and promise that no matter what happened, they would always face life together.
But the man before her only looked annoyed.
"Will you just stop all this crisis drama already?"
Crisis drama.
That was what he called her heartbreak.
Audrey slowly lowered her hands. She stared into his eyes, hoping—perhaps foolishly—that she would find even a trace of remorse.
There was nothing.
And in that moment, something inside her changed.
She had spent months making excuses for him. Perhaps he was stressed. Perhaps business was taking too much of his time. Perhaps things would get better if she were more patient, more understanding, more willing to forgive.
She had given herself countless reasons to stay hopeful.
But standing there, looking at the man who had betrayed her without even the decency to apologize, she realized how exhausted she had become.
She wiped her tears with the back of her hand.
"You know what? I've had enough."
David's eyes narrowed.
Audrey drew a shaky breath.
"I tried to give myself hope that maybe, just maybe, you would change. But no. How could you even—"
She stopped.
The words refused to come. Her throat tightened, and fresh tears gathered in her eyes.
She turned away, pressing a hand over her mouth as she struggled to regain control of herself.
Then, suddenly, she lifted her head.
"Tessie! Charlie!"
Her voice rang through the house.
David straightened.
"What are you doing?"
Audrey ignored him.
"Tessie! Charlie!"
"What the hell are you doing, Audrey?" he demanded, moving toward her.
She turned to face him, her eyes red but her expression firmer than before.
"What I should have done a very, very long time ago."
David stared at her.
For the first time since she had entered the room, his confidence faltered.
"You wouldn't dare."
Audrey held his gaze.
"Then watch me."
She turned and marched toward the bedroom door.
David immediately followed her.
"Audrey!"
She kept walking.
"What the hell do you think you're doing?"
He caught up with her in the hallway and reached for her arm, attempting to stop her.
"Let go of me!"
Audrey twisted free of his grasp and stepped away from him.
"Don't you dare touch me ever again!"
Her shout echoed through the hallway.
For a moment, neither of them moved.
David stared at her, seemingly unable to comprehend that the woman who had spent years loving him, forgiving him, and standing beside him was now looking at him as though he were a stranger.
Audrey's chest heaved as she fought to steady her breathing. She could hear her own heartbeat pounding in her ears.
She didn't know what would happen next.
She didn't know whether she was strong enough to face whatever waited for her beyond this moment.
But she knew one thing.
She could no longer pretend that everything was fine.
Taking one last look at David, she turned toward the staircase and shouted at the top of her voice.
"TESSIE! CHARLIE! COME HERE!"
