Chapter 1
My husband's first love had returned, and the two of them were all over each other. I became the laughingstock of the entire social circle. When I brought up divorce, my husband, Lucian Thorne, blamed me for it. "Just stay home and behave yourself. Don't forget your place." Everyone thought I was poor. What they didn't know was that I was actually a billionaire's daughter. However, after the divorce, Lucian came crying and begging me to take him back. Inside the noisy private lounge, the crowd egged them on. Lucian raised an eyebrow, leaned down, slid an arm around Wren Whitmore's waist, and kissed her. Waves of laughter rippled through the room, one after another. "Damn, she's getting cucked hard right now." "She's just a rebound anyway. Even if they were all over each other right in front of her, Stella Sloane wouldn't dare make a peep." "Total lovesick fool! Hahaha." I clenched my fists in silence. They weren't wrong. Without Lucian, my grandfather and I would never have made it this far. Back then, Lucian had been wonderful to me. When my grandfather fell ill, he covered all the exorbitant medical bills. When everyone said he was just toying with me, Lucian gave me a grand wedding—and shut every last mouth. I was the only child at home with nothing to tie me down—and the only person who'd ever cared about me, my grandfather, was gone. I'd thought Lucian was all I had left. Reality delivered a brutal wake-up call. The night was pitch-black when Lucian stumbled in, chilled from the cold and reeking of alcohol. Probably because I hadn't brought him his usual hangover remedy like I always did. Lucian walked over and patted my cheek. "What, are you upset? It was just a truth or dare. It's not like you can't handle it." Everything he said was laced with blame, as if I were the one being unreasonable. "Wren has depression. Can't you be a little more understanding? Would it kill you to be more mature? Have some class." After finishing his tirade, Lucian collapsed onto the bed and passed out. It was the harshest thing he'd ever said to me in all these years. 'Depression?' For the smallest things —what to wear, how to put an outfit together—Wren would call for Lucian in that soft, fragile voice of hers. What stuck with me most was the first anniversary memorial for my grandfather. Back where I came from, tradition required married couples to attend together. It poured that day, soaking me to the bone and leaving me cold through and through. Lucian never showed up. Not even when it got dark. After I got back, he apologized over and over, showering me with gifts and trying every trick in the book to make it up to me. The next morning, Lucian came down and blinked in surprise when he saw the food on the dining table. Usually, I'd walk several blocks and wait in long lines just to get his favorite breakfast. When he finished eating, I set the divorce papers down in front of him. Lucian took a deep breath and rolled his eyes. "There's a limit to how much drama you can pull. This is going too far." He casually flicked the divorce papers into the trash can. "I've been supporting you. I don't make you work—and this is how you repay me? No wonder everyone says you're a total drama queen. Everything has its limits." Lucian told me to think it over, then turned on his heel and strode out with his nose in the air. I drove to the Sloane Group headquarters. No one would have guessed that the company even Lucian Thorne showed deference to was my family's business. Mrs. Sloane came to meet me in person, clutching my hands with tears streaming down her weathered face. "Finally, you've come to your senses." A while back, she had come to see me. She was the chairperson of this group. She told me she was my grandmother. Years ago, our family had been hunted down by enemies, and I'd been kidn*pped when I was little. I ended up on the streets, an abandoned baby no one wanted. Maybe my grandmother was a shrewd judge of character and had seen right through Lucian from the start. She urged me to get divorced while I still could—if I returned to the Sloane family, I'd inherit the entire fortune. I'd turned her down without hesitation back then. Looking back now... money was far more reliable than any man.
