The forest was too quiet after that, and it felt wrong for all reasons too. It wasn't the peaceful kind of quiet or the kind that meant rest or safety, no. Not one bit. This was the kind that watched, that listened, like it was waiting for the right moment to spread doom.
I hated that I'd come to terms with that feeling, but a part of me still prayed that nothing would go wrong. For reasons I had no idea why, I was anxious that something was going to go the f**k wrong. Either way, I forced myself to push it out of my system.
The air pressed heavy against my skin, thick with silence and the faint metallic tang of rain. Even the trees felt alive somehow, their branches bending slightly as if to make room for me.
