The next day, Drusilla and I get ready in silence. We know that by nightfall, our fate will be set. The fate of our world will be set. We process the gravity of our situation, terrified and excited for what’s to come. I decide it’s finally time to get rid of the remains of the beautiful gown that Angelo made for me. It’s torn and tattered, filthy and ruined. But throwing it away seems like closing a chapter… saying a goodbye I never got to say. So I tuck it away in a corner, wondering if I’ll ever return to this place to see it again.  Drusilla hands me a pale blue cotton dress to put on. “I don’t like dresses,” she explains as she returns to lacing up the men’s blouse she’s wearing.  I do like dresses, so I thank her for the gift and pull it over my head.
