Desperate Measures

Levi took a deep breath and turned to Sarah, his eyes filled with questions.

"Sarah, I need to tell you something. I know that news report was talking about you. The girl in the sketch looked just like you," Levi said, his voice trembling slightly.

Sarah's eyes widened with shock. "What? No that is not me. I didn't rob anyone. I swear," she protested.

Levi looked at her, trying to gauge if she was telling the truth. "Are you sure, Sarah? Because that is not what I saw." he said sternly.

Sarah took a deep breath and composed herself. "Levi, I promise you, I had nothing to do with that robbery. There was a girl in my town who looked exactly like me, and I think she was the one who did it. After the robbery, she and her accomplice disappeared, and I had to leave because I knew that no one would believe that it wasn't me," she explained.

Levi nodded, understanding the gravity of the situation. "Okay, Sarah. I believe you. But we have to be careful. We can't take any chances," he said.

Sarah nodded in agreement. "I know. We'll have to be extra careful now," she said, her voice filled with worry.

Levi took her hand and squeezed it reassuringly. "Don't worry, Sarah. We'll figure this out. Together," he said.

Sarah felt a sense of comfort from Levi's words, and she knew that she could trust him. She took a deep breath and decided to ask him a question that had been nagging at her.

"Levi, can I ask you something? Who are you running from?" she asked, her voice filled with curiosity.

Levi sighed, looking down at the ground. "As you already know, I was part of a gang, Sarah. But one day, I woke up sick and couldn't join them. Since I was home alone, no one could verify that I wasn't with the gang. That day, the gang members shot someone and killed him, and now I'm a person of interest. I had to leave to avoid getting caught up in their mess," he explained, his voice heavy with regret.

Sarah listened to his story, feeling a mix of emotions. She felt sorry for Levi and the situation he was in, but she also admired his courage for leaving the gang.

"I'm sorry, Levi. That's a terrible situation to be in," Sarah said, placing her hand on his shoulder.

Levi looked up at her, a small smile on his face. "Thanks, Sarah. But I'm just glad to be out of that life. And now, that I met you, I feel like anything is possible," he said, his eyes meeting hers.

Sarah felt a warmth spread through her chest, and she realized that she was falling for this stranger who she had just met. She smiled back at him, feeling a sense of adventure and excitement for the journey ahead.

Suddenly, Levi noticed a roadblock up ahead and felt a knot form in his stomach. He could see the police and their dogs searching for someone, and he knew that they needed to avoid being caught at all costs.

"Sarah, don't panic. Just keep driving straight, and don't look back," he said, his voice calm but urgent.

Sarah's hands were shaking on the steering wheel, but she did as she was told, keeping her eyes straight ahead as they approached the roadblock. The police officers signalled for them to stop, but Levi noticed a dirt path to their left that led off the main road. He quickly instructed Sarah to turn left, and they veered off onto the dirt path, leaving the roadblock behind.

They drove for a little while longer until Levi spotted a small cabin in the distance. It was tucked away behind some trees, and it looked like it had been abandoned for years.

"Sarah, look over there. Do you see that cabin?" Levi asked, pointing towards the structure.

Sarah looked over and nodded, her heart pounding in her chest. "Yeah, what about it?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Levi smiled reassuringly. "That's where we're going to hide out for a while. It doesn't look like anyone's been there in years, so it should be safe," he explained.

Sarah nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over her. They drove towards the cabin, and as they got closer, they could see that it was in even worse shape than they had initially thought.

The roof was caving in, and the windows were boarded up with old planks of wood. The porch was barely standing, and the front door was missing, leaving only an empty doorway.

Sarah parked the car behind the cabin, and they both got out, stretching their legs after the long drive.

They knew that it was crucial to keep their car hidden and out of sight, so they decided to cover it with a pile of leaves.

Levi took a rake from the shed out back and began piling up leaves around the car, carefully covering it from view. Sarah watched him work, feeling a sense of admiration for his resourcefulness.

As they worked, the sound of helicopters and police sirens filled the air. Sarah felt a knot form in her stomach, knowing that they were still in danger.

"Levi, what are we going to do?" she asked, her voice trembling.

Levi paused for a moment, taking a deep breath. "We'll lay low for a few days until things cool down. Then we'll figure out our next move," he said, his voice calm and steady.

Sarah nodded, feeling a sense of comfort in Levi's words. She knew that they were in this together and that they would do whatever it took to survive.

"Okay, Sarah. We need to make this place as safe as possible. We'll start by checking the inside and boarding up the windows and doors. We'll also need to find some food and supplies," Levi said, taking charge of the situation.

Sarah nodded, feeling a sense of gratitude towards Levi for taking control of the situation. Together, they made their way into the cabin, their footsteps echoing through the empty rooms.

The cabin was musty and dusty, and it looked like it hadn't been lived in for years. But Sarah and Levi did their best to make it liveable, cleaning the floors and walls and boarding up the windows and doors.

As they settled into their new home, Sarah couldn't help but feel grateful to have Levi by her side. She didn't know what the future held, but she knew that as long as they were together, they could face anything that came their way.
