Chapter 1

LINSEY. Summer. The worst season of the year. So much heat that it is useless and if you are not rich you have to put up with the agony of dying from the heat, from the damn thirty degrees. I was never a fan of summer, rather I always preferred the icy cold of winter. Another thing I hate? The sea. I can't stand the sea water burning your skin because of how salty it is, nor the waves that take you away from the shore that makes you wonder if at some point you're going to return to the surface. I also hate hospitals because of their disgusting smell, but at least once a week I end up in one. My mom always cries when I'm done here and scolds me for scaring her like that. My father just looks at me as always silently disappointed in me. My younger brother always holds my hand and doesn't let go of me until I wake up, he says he doesn't want to let go of me in case it makes me leave his side. My family is normal, whom I deceive no family is normal and mine much less. My mother is not even my mother, my real mother died when I was born. My father hates me, he blames me for my mother's death, even if he doesn't say so, I know she is like that. My brother adores me even knowing what a mess of a sister he has. - How many more times will we have to pray so that you don't die? Stupid question. I don't even believe in god. I look away from my mother to the device that indicates my vital signs. I don't answer, I don't want to. - You're going to stop when you die right? My father asks with noticeable anger and disappointment in his voice. I put my eyes on him. My father is a gray-haired man with green eyes, in a black suit and beige tie, even in a hospital he doesn't stop wearing those elegant suits. - If you already know the answer so you keep bringing me to a hospital. -I do it for your mother if she were up to me she would let you die. - Please stop it. - This is my mother. Always so honest with me. Of course, it is with these things, but it is not to tell me that he thinks I am a murderer for having caused my mother to die. Everything is silent except for my mother's crying that does not stop. I look at her and place my hand on hers. She looks up and places it on our hands. - I'm fine, don't cry anymore. -She looks at me and just smiles, but at least I'm done crying. - Lin? I hear my brother's voice and he turns to look at me. My little blonde with green eyes and round cheeks. He is identical to his mom, just like I am identical to mine, that's why maybe dad hates me so much, maybe I always remind him of mom. - What's up little one? - Did you want to kill yourself? I always ask myself that question. I don't know if what I want is to kill myself, but I don't know if it isn't either. I caress his cheek, he's thirteen years old, he deserves to be told the truth. - I don't know, little one, nor do I. I give him a weak smile. I keep thinking about it and I still don't get any answer. LOGAN. Summer. How I love summer. It is the season of the year when I can always walk without rowing, I can also swim which I love. Although I love myself more and only myself. I don't care about people, I never have. Since I can remember I have only thought of myself. Another thing I love? Well... I don't know, I thought I only love summer, water and me. My family? Well, no, I don't love them, I never have. Lying on the sofa in the living room I start to think about everything others say about me. I never cared what they said, but now for some strange reason it's beginning to affect me. - You are a bad person. -My older sister always reminds me, she never forgets to remind me. She has red hair just like me, only her eyes are light blue and mine are green. - Let's see, why am I a bad person? - Are you seriously asking me? - Of course. I sit nicely on the couch and look at her standing there with her arms on her hips. - You're using Harold as your table. - So what? We pay you for something. - We pay him to clean the house and cook the food, not to make it your personal table, on top of that you supported him with a cup of coffee for the client. I roll my eyes. I can't stand it. I can't stand anyone telling me what's right and what's not. I do not care about that. I tell myself what is good and what is not. I decide what I can or cannot do, not the other insignificant people around me. - So much drama for that. I grab the cup of coffee and place it on the table in the living room. - Better? I ask as I support my legs on Harold. He snorts and hits me on the back of the head. - But what's wrong with you?! - That's what you deserve for being such an i***t and spoiled. He leaves the room leaving me alone with Harold. - Am I really like that? Am I an i***t, spoiled and bad person? - Don't forget selfish sir. -I kick Harold against the living room table for calling me selfish. I lie down on the sofa again and stare at the ceiling. They must be wondering where my father is, because they are never there. They travel so much for work that my sister and I never see them. They always send money once a month and a letter saying they love us. I do not think it is like that. If they loved us, wouldn't they always have to be with us? I don't care anyway, I don't want them either and it's better for me that they're not here. At school they always talk about their vacations and where they are going to go with their family. My vacations will only be at home in my pool and maybe having parties when my sister is not there. It may sound boring, but for me it's the best. I only need myself to have fun, I never needed anyone and I wouldn't have to need others. With me it is more than enough.
