CHAPTER ONE
The morning breeze swept across my face, causing a slight cold. I wrapped my arms across my body for warmth as I shivered. Ignoring the aftermath of the chilled breeze, I stood dazed and closed my eyes.
I was standing in front of the building with a signpost boldly written “LK LOUNGE.” The building in front of me was full of life, people entering with tickets, cars approaching, girls clinging to big shots, and even people kissing in public.
Mr. Lucas Kane,
I whispered… the sound of disaster.
People tread cautiously and pray never to cross paths with him. I couldn't blame my father for taking a loan, but Mr Lucas… it was a mistake that could destroy us.
As I prepared to walk in, two girls brushed past me, one knocking my bag off my shoulder.
“I am sorry” she giggled
I ignored them and bent down to retrieve my bag
“New here?” The second girl asked, smiling . I straightened silently. “Relax,” she laughed, eyeing me from head to toe. “With that body? You’ll be noticed in less than an hour.
I walked past them and headed to the hallway that led to Mr Lucas's basement, the music started to fade lightly, as I approached the huge man dressed in black from head to toe, without facial expression.
“Name?” he grunted.
A…Ava Taylor, I stammered.
He muttered something on the intercom. He made a way for me… “Last door on your left” he growled.
My feet refused to move… “Now!” He barked.
The sound of his voice made me stumble forward. I moved nervously, glancing over my shoulder.
I hadn't even knocked before the devil's voice came from inside. “Enter”. I paused, twisted the doorknob, and entered.
He sat behind the large table, with his face backing me, his fingers tapping the armrest.
“Your name?”
He asked boldly and calmly.
I…. I'm Ava Taylor. There was deep silence. He turned and gave me a discreet once-over and smirked.
“Your father surely knows how to bargain, ” he whispered.
My brows tightened. “Excuse me?” He ignored the question completely. “Why are you here?”
I straightened my shoulders despite the fear crawling through me.
“I came to ask for more time.
Th… three months.” My voice trembled slightly. “Please.”
His gaze lingered on me mockingly. “Your father owes me millions, even working ten jobs, you still couldn’t pay half.”
My stomach tightened. He investigated me.
He walked up straight to me inches away and lifted my chin.
You don’t need three months,” he murmured.
I froze…
“We can start payment immediately
How? I avoided his gaze and moved slightly backwards. Deep down, I already knew
“You are a smart girl, Ava,” he said as he strolled back to his seat.
That must be a joke! I hissed.
“Then, you have until the end of today to bring my money,” he said, looking unbothered
Bastard! I cursed…I stormed out of his office in anger, and I could hear his laughter echoing through the hallway.
The sound of my phone ringing startled me… it was Kalisha.. “Hey girl,” she said, "where are you, you're late?" I looked at my watch, half past eight.
Shit! I cursed. I am on my way, I hung up the phone without saying another word.
I waved Kalish bye after work and headed home, Mr Lucas' words kept ringing loud in my head “you have until this evening to bring my money.” I wiped the tears from the corners of my eyes. I was doomed.

The heated argument outside woke me up. “Ahrrggg! Today was my day off. What an unfaithful morning”
I got up, tied my hair in a messy bun, and headed outside in my pyjamas. As I approached the door.
“THUGS”
“That bastard! He didn't even wait for the sun to rise. I saw my father being pushed to the ground.
“Daddy”
I lunged forward, but a rough hand grabbed my arm painfully.
“Mr. Kane has decided your daughter will pay your debt instead,” one of them announced coldly.
“What?!” My father staggered up, fury blazing in his eyes. “Touch her and I’ll…”
A fist knocked him down violently and hit his waist to the ground. He screamed in pain.
Stop! I screamed widely. The thugs dragged me out anyway without giving my father a second glance.
Tears flowed freely from my eyes.
I was pulled into a black van and placed between two men. I lowered my head, thinking of survival.
Halfway down the road, traffic stopped. My survival instinct sets in. An idea sparked instantly. I began banging desperately on the window.
“Stay still!” One of them beside me barked.
I… I need to pee, I said, fidgeting.
“Hold it.”
“I can’t!”
“I’ll pee right here then!”
The driver cursed under his breath, and they exchanged disgusted looks. Finally, the van stopped.
The van stopped, and one of them pulled me out violently and dragged me to a nearby portable toilet
Move! He shouted,
I stood looking at him, pitifully.
He gave a short glance and stepped away impatiently
The second he did, I ran — I ran as though survival depended on every step — And of course it does.
My lungs burned instantly, but fear kept my legs moving. Cars crawled through traffic beside me as I pushed harder.
FASTER! FASTER!
Then suddenly— THUD!
I slammed violently into the side of the car.
