Chapter 1
Mia's POV
“And I think… we are done…” Gray's voice was cold as always.
“Gray…” I felt my heart breaking into smithereens that could never be mended together ever again.
The moment that I feared the most was finally happening to me. I had seen it coming in a way, but I wasn't ready for any of it.
“You're really making my heart break, Gray…” my troubled mind couldn't coordinate properly to find the right words to say to him at that moment.
The eyes that had been so full of emotion were looking cold and emotionless.
“Gray… we can fix this…” I let out as my beating heart was making it hard for me to breathe. I couldn't find the words to describe how I felt, so I stopped trying. “Please you can't just…”
“Nothing can be fixed, Mia. I don't know what it is, but I just can't stand you anymore…” he stung me wickedly with those words that once had nothing but sweet words for me. What in the goddess's name was happening to my mate?
“It's Ravenna, right?” I asked as I tried all I could to hold back the tears that were threatening to burst out of my eyes right at that point. “You started changing ever since she started looming around you…”
“No, Mia. You're the one who changed…” he retorted with his brows almost covering his eyes in anger. “I don't know why… but I don't think I can put up with you anymore. I cannot have you as my Luna.”
I felt my knees weakening with each word he was saying to me. I felt like I had the wind knocked right out of me. For the past couple of moments, he had been sounding like a totally different person.
“What do you mean…?” I wanted to believe that I hadn't heard him well that time. “I thought you said you loved me and that you couldn't imagine spending the rest of your life with anyone else…”
“Not anymore…” he said coldly, without any further explanation of his reasons. “I don't think I can rule this pack with you as my Luna. You just don't have what it takes…”
“Gray…”
“The pack needs someone stronger, smarter, and of more intelligence than you are…” he spoke like he didn't hear me calling his name.
“Gray… stop…” I couldn't hold back the tears anymore, but he didn't look like he cared.
“I will not carry on with your coronation, and you will be demoted to the very class where you belong…”
“Gray…!” I wailed, but he wasn't touched or moved anyway. It felt like I was some shape-shifter who had taken up Gray's form.
Yes… that was it… I said to myself. That was all it could have been about. It was probably a test that he had put together to know just how much I loved him, and how much he meant to me.
But the cold look in his eyes didn't look like something that would go away any time soon.
“Gray… remember your promise…” I let out as I tried to touch him, only to be met by a hard slap to my face.
“Don't you ever put your hands on me. Omegas have nothing to do with Alphas…” he snarled angrily at me like he was being bugged by some annoying person that he didn't want around.
“I thought you loved me… as I am…” I gasped in tears as I was holding my bruised cheek. It was sad that I was witnessing just how strong he was in the worst possible way.
Gray let out mocking laughter at that. “Well… I have changed my mind…”
“Yeah…you heard him right…” Ravenna came out from the door of his room right behind him, scantily dressed. She had a crop top on and a skirt that barely extended from her waist.
The smile on her face was the kind possessed only by a woman who had just been pleased immensely in bed.
I felt like the rug had been pulled off from under my feet as I stood there, watching both of them. It felt like I was living in some illusion.
“No…” I gasped as I backed away in shock.
“Yes…” Ravenna said mockingly as Gray smiled at that as well. I felt like passing out immediately.
“Take her to the maids' quarters immediately…!” Gray ordered immediately, as some guards came along in no time to drag me away like I was some sort of prisoner.
“I love you Gray…!” she screamed as they both kissed in front of me, causing me to sizzle inwardly.
“You can't do this to me, Gray…!” I yelled down the hallway as I was taken away…
“He just did it…” Ravenna echoed with a victorious laugh to go with it.
I was shamefully taken to the maids' quarters where the maids were feasting their eyes on the sight of the person they once held in high regard as she was about to join them there.
“Get changed… and get to work…” the lady in charge of the maids yelled at me as I was still shaking. Everything was happening too quickly for me to keep up with it.
I hesitantly got changed and got to work as I was still trying to fool myself into believing that it was all part of some test. But I was a fool to believe that as I realized that I had been working from morning till late evening.
“No…” I sobbed as I saw the dishes that I had been stuck with. I was all alone in the dark, moonlit kitchen.
“Seems you are really fitting into your new role really well.” Ravenna’s voice startled me from behind.
“You cunning mutt…” I turned around to look at her with tears.
“Aww… see her cry. You'll be crying blood by the time I'm done with you…” she said with laughter. “I'm just getting started…”
“You're not going to get away with this…” I was gasping with my face flooded with tears and sweat.
“Sure I am. And you are going to see it happen…” she was drawing dangerously closer to me.
“What are you—”
Her hand came on my throat before I could say a word.
“You are cursed to a short life of misery of sadness… consider this a gift and also payback for taking Gray from me…” she said before she let go of me.
“What did you do to me…?” I asked, as I felt a strange heat come over me. With the heat came a burning pain in my head. It made it hard for me to stay on my feet.
“Your fated mate is mine… and now you have till the next full moon to find your second chance mate, or you will be dead…” she snarled at me with an evil laugh. “Let's face it…you are not going to find him at all… your life is slipping away from you…”
“No…” I trembled in fright as I fell to my knees. My vision became blurry and Ravenna's echoing words slowly faded.
I blacked out as it was just too much for me to bear.
