Mia's POV
“Don't you dare lay a finger on her…” the last minute hero's voice blared through the woods.
My heart was thumping really hard as I was sure that there was no way I would come out of that without any scars or injuries.
Perhaps, the curse which had been put on me was to make sure that I was always up against some sort of misfortune in every single place that I went.
But then who was that voice we had demanded from them to let me go? No? I was more than anxious to see who had such authority in his voice.
There were footsteps sounding with authority in them as the mysterious being in the shadows was beginning to draw closer to where I was standing and shaking in fright.
“What's all this madness about?” He asked, as he was much closer than he had been before then.
The slowness with which he walked made it seem like he was intentionally trying to delay my seeing his face. I noticed that the four men who had come to me were also shaking as he closed in on them.
“I'm sorry, my lord, we were just trying to rough her up a bit just to make sure that she was not an impostor or a spy sent to spy out the pack…” one of the men who had been sounding so bold and sure of himself was suddenly stuttering terribly. “Nothing more…”
“But I just heard you saying otherwise.” The man was there as his aura was becoming more and more intimidating as he was close just a few inches away. But his face was still wrapped up in the darkness. “Do you actually think this stupid behavior would be good for our pack?”
“I am really sorry my lord, it was not intentional,” the man was now pleading, as he seemed like he could go down on his knees just to show how sorry he was. “This would never happen again. I promise…”
“Fair enough,” he said, as he seemed like he was turning his attention to me. He worked closer to where I stood as he seemed to take some interest in me. There were just so many thoughts running through my head as he closed the distance between us.
I wanted to say a couple of words in defense, but the crippling feeling of fear made me swallow them all at once.
It was really hard for me to speak as I was wondering who exactly he was, and I didn't want to say anything that would make him turn against me after having saved me from those four bastards.
“Who are you?” he asked as he stared at me. Finally, the look on his face was clear, and I could see what he looked like. “What pack are you from?”
“I am Mia, and I am from the… Silver Moon pack…” I was unable to coordinate properly as there was just too much pressure on me as I stood there looking at them.
More than anything, I was scared of what they could possibly do if I happened to tell them that I had run away from my pack. They would probably think that I was some sort of rogue who had escaped a really bitter punishment in my pack and was probably in search of a temporary shelter.
I was already shaking as I thought of that, as I was still on our way to who I was dealing with.
“What are you doing out here then?” He asked with a really formal tone that made me feel like I was most likely about to face the same punishment which I had been running away from.
But at that point, the one thing that bothered me most was how I was going to find my second chance mate.
“Are you alright?” he asked with a more gentle voice than before. “What are you doing out here all by yourself?”
“The thing is…” I was still a bit tongue-tied as the words just wouldn't come out of my mouth. It felt like they were clinging stubbornly to the tip of my tongue.
“She could be a spy…” one of the men cut me short with anger and seeming frustration, as he hadn't let them have their way with me.
“That could be why she doesn't have an answer to you…”
“Quiet, you people with cognitive disabilities…” he shut them up at once as he seemed to be at my side. That warmed my heart a bit.
“I am Finn, the beta of the Crimson Crescent pack…”
The sound of his pack's name rang bells in my ears. Really familiar, scary bells. “Alpha Arthur…” I gasped the name of the man who had been the terror of every pack. The ease I felt was soon evaporating almost immediately it had come.
There were just too many things that looked like I had leaped from the frying pan to the fire, as I had heard of Arthur's zero tolerance for intruders. He would do the most terrible things to them just to pass the message to anyone who would think of doing the same despicable act.
There was no way I was going to explain my way out of that and that made it my best option for survival to run away from there as soon as I could.
Without saying one more word or thinking one more idle thought, I took to my heels and fled in the opposite direction. The sound of footsteps thudding behind me was terrifying, and I just didn't want to look back to see how far away they were from me.
“I told you she was an impostor, a spy probably from our enemies!” one of the men shouted at the top of his lungs, as they were really catching up with me.
Just from hearing the sound of their breathing I could tell that they had the worst of intentions for me. I had to flee as far as I could as they would trap me and keep me from finding my second chance mate in the thirty days that I had.
I really didn't know what else to do as I ran with my tired body. It was really saddening to know that the sacrifice which had been made for my escape was about to go in vain. There were just too many things lining up in my head, making me not want to get caught.
“Get back here!” The men screamed ceaselessly as they were soon catching up with me. I would be dead if they would shift into their wolf forms.
Soon enough, I was on my way out of the woods. Any mistake from then on would be the beginning of the end for me as I would never be allowed to leave if they would snatch me.
The kind one among them was probably disappointed that I had taken advantage of the quick moment of rest which the heart afforded me.
They just wouldn't understand the desperateness of my predicaments, so I didn't bother explaining at all that the drive to stay alive was what pushed me and not just rebellion to their authority.
Alpha Arthur was probably going to scare me alive if they dared report me to him. I just didn't want any of that.
I kept running even faster, but soon enough I tripped over a tree root that seemed to have been hiding in the dark and waiting till I got there before it would trip me and make me.
“You should have just stayed at a place,” one of the events said to me as he folded his fist and swung it to my face, and I was knocked out into the blackness once again.
