CHAPTER ONE The Night Everything Changed New York City was home to the wealthy Sterling family, whose magnificent mansion stood proudly behind tall gates and beautiful gardens. Nathaniel Sterling was a successful businessman, while his wife, Catherine, was a loving woman who had always dreamed of becoming a mother. After years of marriage, their dream was finally coming true. Catherine was pregnant, and the entire family was excited. Her sister-in-law, Vanessa, had been staying with them throughout the pregnancy, helping Catherine with everything she needed. To Nathaniel, Vanessa was a trusted sister. He never imagined that the woman he trusted most would one day become the reason his family fell apart. One afternoon, Catherine returned from a hospital appointment with exciting news. “The doctor says everything is going well,” she announced, smiling at Nathaniel. He held her hands. “That's wonderful, sweetheart. I can't wait to meet our baby.” Catherine laughed softly. “There's something else.” “What is it?” She handed him the scan results. Nathaniel stared at the paper, confused at first. Then his eyes widened. “Twins?” he exclaimed. Catherine nodded happily. “We're having twins!” Nathaniel pulled her into his arms, laughing with excitement. Vanessa stood nearby, watching them celebrate. She forced a smile, but something dark stirred inside her. Twins. Two babies who would inherit their parents' wealth and everything Nathaniel had worked hard to build. As the family celebrated, Vanessa quietly excused herself and went upstairs. Inside her room, she picked up her phone and called someone. “It's happening sooner than I expected,” she whispered. A woman's voice answered from the other end. “Have you made your decision?” Vanessa glanced at the closed door. “Yes. I'll let you know when the time comes.” She ended the call and stared at herself in the mirror. Nobody knew what she was planning. Nobody suspected that behind her sweet smile was a woman prepared to destroy her own family. --- The following morning, Catherine suddenly experienced severe labour pains. “Vanessa!” she cried, gripping the edge of the bed. “Something is wrong!” Vanessa rushed into the room. “What happened?” “The pain! It's getting worse!” Vanessa immediately called Nathaniel, who hurried home and rushed his wife to the hospital. At the hospital, doctors quickly attended to Catherine. Nathaniel paced nervously outside the delivery room while Vanessa sat quietly beside him. “Please, God, let my wife and children be safe,” Nathaniel whispered. After what felt like an eternity, a nurse finally appeared. “Congratulations! Your wife has delivered two beautiful baby girls.” Nathaniel's face lit up. “Two girls?” “Yes, sir. Both babies are doing well.” He thanked the nurse before entering the room. Catherine lay exhausted on the bed, holding one baby while the other rested in a bassinet beside her. Nathaniel approached her, tears gathering in his eyes. “They're beautiful,” he whispered. Catherine smiled weakly. “Meet Lily and Chloe.” He kissed her forehead before carefully holding one of the babies. “Welcome to the world, my princesses.” Vanessa stood at the foot of the bed, watching the happy family. For a moment, she almost reconsidered her plan. But the thought quickly disappeared. She had already made her decision. --- Later that evening, Catherine fell into a deep sleep after the exhausting delivery. Nathaniel noticed that they needed several things for the babies, including blankets, clothes, and other essentials. “I'll go into town and get everything we need,” he told Vanessa. “Please stay with Catherine and the girls.” “Of course,” Vanessa replied sweetly. “Don't worry about anything.” Nathaniel kissed his wife before leaving. The moment he was gone, Vanessa picked up her phone. “The way is clear,” she whispered. “Come now.” Not long afterward, her accomplice arrived. Vanessa led her into the room where the babies were sleeping. “You'll take Lily,” Vanessa instructed. “I'll handle Chloe.” Her accomplice nodded. “Are you sure this will work?” Vanessa's eyes hardened. “Everything has been arranged. We cannot afford any mistakes.” The accomplice carefully lifted Lily from the bassinet and wrapped her in a blanket. Vanessa watched as the woman carried the baby away. But before she could continue with her own plan, she heard a familiar voice from the corridor. “Vanessa? Are you there?” Her heart nearly stopped. It was Nathaniel. He had returned earlier than expected. Vanessa looked at Chloe, then toward the door. If Nathaniel entered and found her holding the baby while Lily was missing, he would immediately suspect her. Panic seized her. She hurriedly ensured Chloe was safe in her bassinet. Then, desperate to create an explanation for what had happened, she inflicted superficial injuries on herself and collapsed near the doorway. Moments later, Nathaniel entered. “Vanessa!” He rushed toward her. “Vanessa, what happened? Can you hear me?” She slowly opened her eyes and pretended to struggle. “The baby,” she whispered weakly. Nathaniel immediately looked toward the bassinets. Chloe was there. But Lily was gone. He stared at the empty space, unable to understand what he was seeing. “Where is Lily?” he demanded, turning toward Vanessa. “Where is my daughter?” Vanessa shook her head weakly. “I don't know. I heard something, and then...” Her voice trailed off as she pretended to lose consciousness again. Nathaniel called for help. Hospital staff rushed into the room, and Vanessa was taken for treatment. But Nathaniel could think of only one thing. His daughter was missing. --- Catherine was devastated when she woke up and learned that Lily had disappeared. “Where is my baby?” she cried, clutching Chloe to her chest. “Nathaniel, please tell me this is a mistake!” Nathaniel held his wife tightly, struggling to find words that could comfort her. “I'll find her, Catherine. I promise you, I'll bring our daughter home.” The hospital staff reviewed the available security footage, but the cameras that could have helped explain what happened were unavailable. There were no clear answers. No useful evidence. And no sign of Lily. Vanessa returned home with the family after receiving medical attention. She kept her head bowed, pretending to be traumatised by the incident, while secretly hoping nobody would ever discover her involvement. At the Sterling mansion, Catherine refused to let Chloe out of her sight. Every time she looked at her remaining daughter, she remembered the child who should have been beside her. Nathaniel, meanwhile, contacted the police and began searching for Lily. He questioned everyone who had been at the hospital and followed every lead he could find. Days passed, then weeks. Still, Lily remained missing. The Sterling family had been blessed with two daughters, but a single night of betrayal had left them with only one. And somewhere far away, Lily was growing up without knowing the truth about her birth, her family, or the sister she had left behind.
