I told Olivia I was fine when she called before breakfast, even though she immediately pointed out that I had abandoned half a plate of her chicken and an untouched piece of garlic bread the day before. I told Jill I was fine after she sent me three messages threatening to hide Brett’s hockey equipment somewhere he would never find it. I even told Sophia I was fine when she appeared in my doorway carrying two coffees and announced that caffeine could not cure emotional stupidity, but it was the only treatment she could legally offer without a medical license.
