Brett Mathews lives for the game. As the college hockey team’s star forward, he’s fast on the ice, unstoppable on the scoreboard, and the guy every fan wants to cheer for. Off the ice, he’s got one play he refuses to make—falling in love. It’s too risky, too messy, and he’s lost enough to know better.

Cassie Jones has been in Brett’s corner since they met as freshman. She’s his best friend, the one person who keeps him grounded when the pressure gets heavy. Brett knows she wants more than friendship—and if he’s honest, part of him does too. But risking their bond? That feels like a penalty he can’t take.

The closer they get, the harder it is to stay in the friend zone. With the draft on the line and sparks flying off the ice, Ryan has to decide if he’s ready to break his own rules… or let the best thing in his life skate away.

Chapter 1
Cassie I stared at my reflection in the mirror, and I hated what I saw. The shirt I thought would look cute on me instead made me look frumpy. “Why is it that all the cute shirts just don’t fit me right?” I groaned. “Well, designers clearly don't consider that some women are double D’s,” Sophia, my sorority sister, replied casually from my bed. I turned to look at her. “Isn’t it funny that more women are in the D range or larger, especially with all the breast implants? You’d think designers would catch on,” I said, tossing the shirt I had on to the floor in frustration. I realized I would need to return the clothes I had just bought over the weekend. Out of six shirts, four were already destined for the return pile. “You know,” I said as I faced Sophia again, “having breasts this big isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. If women truly understood the curse of big breasts, they might think twice about getting implants.” Sophia glanced up from the magazine she was flipping through. “Like looking good in a cute shirt?” she teased. “Exactly!” I replied, turning to try on the last shirt. “Why didn’t you try any of this stuff on in the store? Now you have to do double the work going back to return things,” she pointed out. “I just hate trying things on in stores. The changing rooms are way too small,” I explained. “So you’re claustrophobic?” Sophia asked, raising an eyebrow. “I’m not claustrophobic; I just dislike taking off my clothes, trying something on, and then putting my clothes back on again,” I said, exasperated. “Oh, so it’s like what you’re doing now?” Sophia smirked. I rolled my eyes. “It’s not the same.” “Okay, so I guess you don’t like public s*x then. It’s essentially similar: pull down, put in, take out, pull back up,” she said with a grin. I groaned. Why was I friends with this girl? “Don’t you have a party to get ready for?” I asked her. Sophia sat up on my bed. “Yeah! Are you sure you don’t want to come? I heard AKL is going all out for this one. They even got a portable hot tub in the basement just for tonight.” I bent down to pick up the shirts I had thrown on the floor. “Yeah, that’s a hard pass. I’m just not in the mood to party,” I told her. Sophia got off my bed and placed the magazine back on my nightstand. I felt lucky to have my own room as the president of this sorority. “Alrighty then,” she said as she walked to my door, pausing just as she reached it. “I heard Brett and the other hockey gods talking,” she added. “Okay?” I replied, curious. “They’re going to AKL’s party tonight,” she said before leaving my room. Brett Mathews. Sophia knew that name would grab my attention, and that’s exactly why she mentioned it. Brett is one of the hockey gods at our school. There are four of them in that little clique: Brett, Marco, Blake, and Olly. They call themselves the hockey gods not only because they’re good-looking but also because they have a strong chance of making it to the NHL next year. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that they have plenty of puck bunnies chasing after them. I sighed. Part of me considered going to AKL’s party just to see Brett. My relationship with Brett is complicated. I first met him when we were both freshmen, teamed up in student government—an obligatory class for all freshmen at the university. We hit it off instantly and became friends. Unfortunately, that’s all we are—friends. Well, that’s not entirely true. We have a sort of situationship. We do things together, but we aren’t friends with benefits. We’ve never gone all the way; all we do is what he calls “massages,” which means he gets oral from me. I’m okay with that since I’ve never really enjoyed oral myself. I’ve never had anyone do it well, so I don’t push it. If you saw me with Brett, you might think we were more than just a situationship. We hang out and help each other when needed, but he isn’t interested in a committed relationship. It doesn’t help that he has a crush on his housemate, Olivia. Brett had to leave the Hockey House for some reason and needed a place to stay. Olivia had just lost one of her housemates and was looking for someone to fill the spot. The timing worked out perfectly for both of them and their other housemate, Anthony. I sighed again. So much for a quiet night alone in the sorority house. I just wanted to enjoy some peace and quiet. That’s not easy when you have ten girls living together, especially in a sorority. As president, I deal with their issues more than anyone else. So when I found out everyone had plans for the night and the house would be empty, I looked forward to some solitude. Well, I guess my plans have changed. Instead of a quiet evening, I need to get ready for a frat party. I’m so pathetic. I’m only considering going because I want to see Brett, who will likely ignore me in favor of some puck bunny for the night. Yeah, I definitely need help.
