On the spot, but not willing to fold, Richard replied, “Things have happened too fast for me to make possibly empty promises. I don’t need that, and you damn sure don’t either. Can we start off as friends again, take it slow, and see what happens?”
Even with Rain’s back to him, Richard felt like he was in a stare down.
Another day passed before Rain replied with, “Sure.”
“Sure?”
“Yeah, sure, as in why the hell not. If it’s a mistake, it won’t be the worst one I ever made. My only request is that if it starts to go sour, we let the arrangement go before it does irreversible damage, okay?”
“That sounds awfully heavy, Rain. I know you’ve been through a lot, and we’ve been separated for a while, but do you really think we’d fall apart like that just from living together?”
